Book Dangerous Opportunities

Download or read book Dangerous Opportunities written by Stephanie Ben-Ishai and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2021-09-03 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2017 Home Capital saga represents the shortcomings of a financial system challenged by distinct, siloed regulatory frameworks that fail to communicate with each other. Home Capital is a publicly traded company that acts as a lender through the Home Trust Company, most often providing mortgages to clients rejected by traditional banks. Home Capital’s 2017 announcement that it required $2 billion to sustain a $600-million loss shook customer confidence, and fueled by allegations of corruption, the company suffered a rapid decline in stock price. The Home Capital crisis is the most recent pre-pandemic example of systemic risk in the financial sector in Canada and highlights the invaluable opportunity we have to avoid repeating past mistakes in the nearing post-pandemic economic reality. Using the 2017 Home Capital saga as a starting point, Dangerous Opportunities sheds light on the compartmentalization of regulators and its greater ramifications on board independence and corporate governance, taxation in the competitive housing sector, and the success of non-bank financial institutions in various jurisdictions. A hybrid of law and business, Dangerous Opportunities is a must-read for those interested in the underbelly of financial institutions and is an inspired read in the aftermath of the recent housing crisis, which saw many aspiring homeowners seek dangerous opportunities outside of the traditional banking system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role of bodyguard or close protection officer" is highly misunderstood. In action films, threats are obvious: ski-mask wearing gunmen fire at the client from a speeding black Suburban truck. In real life, threats may be harder to assess. If a crowd of unarmed protesters blocks the client's access to his or her car as well as the building they are being escorted to, this poses a threat. However, bodyguards have no legal right to use force in a public place unless they are being attacked. Usually bodyguards are the ones who call the police. This interesting new book examines the different types of bodyguard - police, military and civilian; their training; typical roles; the equipment they use; weapons; bodyguards and the law; evasive driving; and life as a bodyguard.

Book History s Most Dangerous Jobs Miners

Download or read book History s Most Dangerous Jobs Miners written by Anthony Burton and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2013-02-01 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mining is Britain's oldest industry, and this book follows the men and, in the past, women who spent their lives working underground. Since the New Stone Age various minerals have been wrested from British soil – copper, tin, gold, lead – but in later periods the key commodity was coal. Those who worked in the mines were constantly battling on two fronts: there was the continual danger of flood and explosion; and the often bitter struggles against the mine owners. This story is also one of invention and innovation, looking particularly at how the independent miners of Cornwall and Devon were at the forefront of the development of the steam engine that was to transform society. This, the second book in an exciting new series looking at Britain's most dangerous industries, is a tale of blood, sweat and death among a courageous and close-knit community that has now all but passed into history.

Book History s Most Dangerous Jobs Navvies

Download or read book History s Most Dangerous Jobs Navvies written by Anthony Burton and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2012-01-31 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of the men who built Britain’s canals and railways – not the engineers and the administrators but the ones who provided the brawn and muscle. There had never been a workforce like the navvies, a great army of men, moving about the country following the work as it became available. This book will tell of their extraordinary feats of strength and their often colourful lives. They lived rough, usually having to make do with huts and shelters cobbled together from whatever materials were available. They worked hard and drank hard. Often exploited by their employers, they were always liable to erupt into riots that could have fatal results. The book will look at who these men were, where they came from – and destroy the myth that they were all Irish. It is a story full of drama, but above all one of great achievements.

Book Do Immigrants Work in Riskier Jobs

Download or read book Do Immigrants Work in Riskier Jobs written by Pia M. Orrenius and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2010-02 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent reports suggest that immigrants are more likely to hold jobs with worse working conditions than U.S.-born workers, perhaps because immigrants work in jobs that â¿¿natives donâ¿¿t want.â¿¿ Despite this widespread view, earlier studies have not found immigrants to be in riskier jobs than natives. This study combines individual-level data from the 2003â¿¿2005 American Community Survey on work-related injuries and fatalities to take a fresh look at whether foreign-born workers are employed in more dangerous jobs. The results indicate that immigrants are in fact more likely to work in risky jobs than U.S.-born workers, partly due to differences in average characteristics, such as immigrantsâ¿¿ lower English language ability and educational attainment.
