Book Dangerous Desire

Download or read book Dangerous Desire written by Pamela E. Barnett and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In Dangerous Desire, Pamela E. Barnett explores the jarring, frequent juxtaposition of sexual freedom and rape in American literature of about the 1960s. Why were the social premises figured by sexual freedom in these texts consistently foreclosed by rape? Barnett argues that this literary phenomenon reflected tensions central to the historical moment. Through a cultural studies analysis of key texts including Soul on Ice, Against our Will, The Women's Room, The Women of Brewster Place, Meridian, and Deliverance, Barnett demonstrates how rape has been employed as a backlash against the very movements of "dangerous desire" that inspired these literary accounts - feminism, cicil rights, black nationalism, and gay liberation".--BOOKJACKET.

Book excerpt: The dam inside Lily shattered, releasing a torrent of ecstasy that washed over her in wave after shuddering wave. Her cries of pleasure filled the room, mingling with the sighs and moans of the other women as they revelled in her surrender. With an approving smile, Natasha unlocked Lily's handcuffs, allowing her trembling arms to fall back to her sides. As the cold metal released its grip on Lily’s wrists, she felt the lingering sting of the welts left behind. Instead of recoiling from the pain, she found herself craving even more. Lily, a spirited and inquisitive college student, stumbles upon the world of domination and submission when she crosses paths with Natasha, a therapist whose methods are anything but conventional. Natasha’s approach involves harnessing intense sexual release to unlock the hidden potential within her patients. Intrigued and aroused by the promise of a deeper understanding of herself, Lily steps into this uncharted territory. As their sessions progress, Lily and her Dominatrix’s relationship transforms into a passionate, complex dance of vulnerability and trust. Through a series of intensely exhilarating encounters, Lily and Natasha navigate the realms of sensuality and surrender, tapping into a wellspring of emotions neither had anticipated. In this intense and unpredictable journey, Lily will be forever changed, and she and Natasha’s lives become intertwined in a way the young woman never could have foreseen. Book Dangerous Desire

Download or read book Dangerous Desire written by Pamela Barnett and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-11-15 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dangerous Desire is an important work that calls attention to how post-1960s literary representations of rape have shaped the ways in which both sexual and social freedoms are imagined in American culture. Exploring key post-sixties texts including Cleaver's Soul on Ice , Brownmiller's Against Our Will , French's The Women's Room , Naylor's The Women of Brewster Place , Walker's Meridian , and Dickey's Deliverance , Barnett finds that the widespread literary explorations of rape were almost always conjoined with one or more of the radical social movements of the sixties: civil rights, black nationalism, women's liberation and black feminism. Sexual violence emerges in these texts when the transformative possibilities articulated by sixties-era liberation movements trigger and intensify imbalances of power and cultural difference-for example, Eldridge Cleaver's claim that he lashed out against the white power structure by raping white women. This book should be of considerable interest to students and scholars of 20th century American literature, as well as American Studies and African American Studies scholars interested broadly in issues of sexuality, race, and violenc

Book Ambition and Desire

Download or read book Ambition and Desire written by Kate Williams and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2014-11-04 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From CNN’s official royal historian, a highly praised young author with a doctorate from Oxford University, comes the extraordinary rags-to-riches story of the woman who conquered Napoleon’s heart—and with it, an empire. Their love was legendary, their ambition flagrant and unashamed. Napoleon Bonaparte and his wife, Josephine, came to power during one of the most turbulent periods in the history of France. The story of the Corsican soldier’s incredible rise has been well documented. Now, in this spellbinding, luminous account, Kate Williams draws back the curtain on the woman who beguiled him: her humble origins, her exorbitant appetites, and the tragic turn of events that led to her undoing. Born Marie-Josèphe-Rose de Tascher de La Pagerie on the Caribbean island of Martinique, the woman Napoleon would later call Josephine was the ultimate survivor. She endured a loveless marriage to a French aristocrat—executed during the Reign of Terror—then barely escaped the guillotine blade herself. Her near-death experience only fueled Josephine’s ambition and heightened her determination to find a man who could finance and sustain her. Though no classic beauty, she quickly developed a reputation as one of the most desirable women on the continent. In 1795, she met Napoleon. The attraction was mutual, immediate, and intense. Theirs was an often-tumultuous union, roiled by their pursuit of other lovers but intensely focused on power and success. Josephine was Napoleon’s perfect consort and the object of national fascination. Together they conquered Europe. Their extravagance was unprecedented, even by the standards of Versailles. But she could not produce an heir. Sexual obsession brought them together, but cold biological truth tore them apart. Gripping in its immediacy, captivating in its detail, Ambition and Desire is a true tale of desire, heartbreak, and revolutionary turmoil, engagingly written by one of England’s most praised young historians. Kate Williams’s searing portrait of this alluring and complex woman will finally elevate Josephine Bonaparte to the historical prominence she deserves. Praise for Ambition and Desire “Not just a scholarly work, but a page-turner . . . Williams is no stranger to creating works on strong and influential women, and, as in those works, here she does an admirable job of demystifying Josephine. . . . This engrossing and accessible account is for all readers who enjoy historical biography.”—Library Journal “[A] riveting account . . . Williams perfectly illustrates all that was bizarre and maddening about French life during the reign of Josephine and Napoleon Bonaparte.”—Publishers Weekly “Intelligent and entertaining.”—Kirkus Reviews “An in-depth portrait of the substantive woman behind the throne.”—Booklist “Reading [Ambition and Desire] is like watching Silk Stockings, the 1957 Hollywood masterpiece with Fred Astaire and Cyd Charisse. The book flows and jumps, taking the reader by the hand through tormented times in French history without ever letting you go or losing itself in the intricacies of French politics.”—The Times “A sparkling account of this most fallible and endearing of women.”—Daily Mail “A whirlwind tour of French history.”—The Telegraph

Book Moral Threats and Dangerous Desires

Download or read book Moral Threats and Dangerous Desires written by Deborah Lupton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-23 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1981, AIDS has had an enormous impact upon the popular imagination. Few other diseases this century have been greeted with quite the same fear, loathing, and prejudice against those who develop it. The mass media, and in particular, the news media, have played a vital part in "making sense" of AIDS. This volume takes an interdisciplinary perspective, combining cultural studies, history of medicine, and contemporary social theory to examine AIDS reporting. There have been three major themes dominating coverage: the "gay-plague" dominant in the early 1980s, panic-stricken visions of the end of the world as AIDS was said to pose a threat to everyone, in the late 1980s; and a growing routinising of coverage in the 1990s. This book lays bare the sub-textual ideologies giving meaning to AIDS news reports, including anxieties about pollution and contagion, deviance, bodily control, the moral meanings of risk, the valorisation of drugs and medical science. Drawing together the work of cultural and politicaltheorists, sociologists and historians who have written about medicine, disease and the body, as well as that of theorists in Europe and the USA who have focused their attention specificaiiy on AIDS, this book explores the wide theoretical debate about the importance of language in the social construction of illness and disease. This text offers insights into the sociocultural context in which attitudes towards people with HIV or AIDS and people's perceptions of risk from HIV infection are developed and the responses of governments to the AIDS epidemic are formulated.
