Book excerpt: "An enthusiastic thumbs-up to Captain Brian Power-Waters, America's conscience on air safety. Danger in the Air pulls no punches and harbors no sacred cows-assembling a convincing case that the nation's sky cop, the Federal Aviation Administration itself, has "blood on its hands" in the horrible 9/11 tragedy because of its longtime failure to require stronger cockpit doors, sharper-eyed screeners and other measures to reduce terrorist threats. Power-Waters also rips the lid off a runway-full of other air safety shortcomings that endanger the flying public every day, whether aboard a jumbo jet, an air taxi or an ultralight. Danger in the Air will make you uneasy and angry, and may drive you to scream for reforms"--Alex Michelini, former award-winning Investigative Reporter, New York Daily News; former adjunct at Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. "Captain Power-Waters, drawing on his vast experience in aviation-from both the line Pilot's perspective and a very accurate and informed understanding of an Air Traffic Controller's job, brings together facts and information concerning the truth about aviation safety and the failures made by the agency tasked with overseeing it-the FAA."--William A. Faville, Jr., Former Director, Safety and Technology, National Air Traffic Controller Association."If your are interested in the inside story of the attack on America, how the Federal Aviation Administration contributed to it, how airport security is still a job, and how the FAA and airlines are fighting to extend the time a pilot is confined to the cockpit, then this is the book for you."--Carl T. Butterworth, Senior Captain, American Airlines, Retired Brigadier General, Air National Guard.

Book excerpt: Is God through with the church? Has Jesus Christ done away with the organized structure He created 2000 years ago and replaced it with unstructured "fellowships" that eliminate the need for elders and deacons? YES! That is ... if you are to believe Harold Camping, best known as the "voice" of Family Radio, a worldwide gospel ministry. Many trusting Christians have come to take this man's biblical interpretations as virtually the very Word of God itself! James R. White, perhaps the most well-known Protestant apologist of our time, takes on Mr. Camping and his heretical biblical interpretations to show that, contrary to Mr. Camping's teachings, the Lord Jesus Christ loves His church - and that the church will endure on earth until that blessed day when He comes!

Book Radio and the Politics of Sound in Interwar France 1921 1939

Download or read book Radio and the Politics of Sound in Interwar France 1921 1939 written by Rebecca P. Scales and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-02-24 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In December 1921, France broadcast its first public radio program from a transmitter on the Eiffel Tower. In the decade that followed, radio evolved into a mass media capable of reaching millions. Crowds flocked to loudspeakers on city streets to listen to propaganda, children clustered around classroom radios, and families tuned in from their living rooms. Radio and the Politics of Sound in Interwar France, 1921–1939 examines the impact of this auditory culture on French society and politics, revealing how broadcasting became a new platform for political engagement, transforming the act of listening into an important, if highly contested, practice of citizenship. Rejecting models of broadcasting as the weapon of totalitarian regimes or a tool for forging democracy from above, the book offers a more nuanced picture of the politics of radio by uncovering competing interpretations of listening and diverse uses of broadcast sound that flourished between the world wars.

Book Environmental Health and the U S Federal System

Download or read book Environmental Health and the U S Federal System written by Michael R Greenberg and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-08-13 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explains how the U.S. federal system manages environmental health issues, with a unique focus on risk management and human health outcomes. Building on a generic approach for understanding human health risk, this book shows how federalism has evolved in response to environmental health problems, political and ideological variations in Washington D.C, as well as in-state and local governments. It examines laws, rules and regulations, showing how they stretch or fail to adapt to environmental health challenges. Emphasis is placed on human health and safety risk and how decisions have been influenced by environmental health information. The authors review different forms of federalism, and analyse how it has had to adapt to ever evolving environmental health hazards, such as global climate change, nanomaterials, nuclear waste, fresh air and water, as well as examining the impact of robotics and artificial intelligence on worker environmental health. They demonstrate the process for assessing hazard information and the process for federalism risk management, and subsequently arguing that human health and safety should receive greater attention. This book will be essential reading for students and scholars working on environmental health and environmental policy, particularly from a public health, and risk management viewpoint, in addition to practitioners and policymakers involved in environmental management and public policy.

Book The Most Dangerous Man in America

Download or read book The Most Dangerous Man in America written by John K. Wilson and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2011-03-01 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rush Limbaugh is the most prominent figure in the conservative movement today. With almost 20 million listeners every week on more than six hundred stations, Limbaugh has a larger media platform than any other individual in the nation. And this is why he is so dangerous. Despite refusing to uphold even the most basic standards of journalism, Rush has been given an extensive, wide-reaching platform with which to spew his venom. And spew it he does! In this book, author John K. Wilson uses the most damning evidence of all—Rush's own words—to deliver the ultimate indictment of Limbaugh's bankrupt ideology and how it embodies the decline of the conservative movement. Wilson catalogs the world according to Rush—from the political conspiracies to his disdain for scientific evidence and apparent love of racist, sexist, and homophobic stereotypes—and shows how the radio personality poisons any rational political rhetoric with an endless stream of slurs, lies, and intimidation. Most revealingly, the author demonstrates how Limbaugh's blustering, baseless proclamations and love for savage, personal attacks have had a chilling effect on both parties, as he viciously targets not only liberals but also any Republican who dares question one of his conclusions. Meanwhile, Rush's viselike grip on the political arena has created a media monster so powerful that even liberal commentators are forced to engage with him and his polarizing discourse. The Most Dangerous Man in America reveals Rush Limbaugh to be just that. No matter what you thought about the man before, you will never feel the same way about him again.

Book The Airwaves of New York

Download or read book The Airwaves of New York written by Bill Jaker and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-05-07 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From its inception in New York City, radio dramatically changed the city. The five boroughs became, in some ways, more united through the medium, as common concerns were aired and given wider attention. But as radio focused more on entertainment, the city lost the last of its small town origins, as people left the front stoop for the living room. This heavily illustrated history traces the development and influence of AM radio in the New York metropolitan area, as well as providing technical data and program schedules of the stations.

False teachers and heretical teachings have crept into the Church unawares bringing with it a form of captivity similar to the captivity of the nation Israel, but with far graver consequences.

Book What s Fair on the Air

Download or read book What s Fair on the Air written by Heather Hendershot and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2011-09-30 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rise of right-wing broadcasting during the Cold War has been mostly forgotten today. But in the 1950s and ’60s you could turn on your radio any time of the day and listen to diatribes against communism, civil rights, the United Nations, fluoridation, federal income tax, Social Security, or JFK, as well as hosannas praising Barry Goldwater and Jesus Christ. Half a century before the rise of Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck, these broadcasters bucked the FCC’s public interest mandate and created an alternate universe of right-wing political coverage, anticommunist sermons, and pro-business bluster. A lively look back at this formative era, What’s Fair on the Air? charts the rise and fall of four of the most prominent right-wing broadcasters: H. L. Hunt, Dan Smoot, Carl McIntire, and Billy James Hargis. By the 1970s, all four had been hamstrung by the Internal Revenue Service, the FCC’s Fairness Doctrine, and the rise of a more effective conservative movement. But before losing their battle for the airwaves, Heather Hendershot reveals, they purveyed ideological notions that would eventually triumph, creating a potent brew of religion, politics, and dedication to free-market economics that paved the way for the rise of Ronald Reagan, the Moral Majority, Fox News, and the Tea Party.

Book How to Ruin Your Education and TV Viewing

Download or read book How to Ruin Your Education and TV Viewing written by Spencer D. Gear and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-03-31 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What will you do as a parent if your fourteen-year-old comes home from school and says, "You and the teachers have been telling me Columbus discovered the Americas. You've lied to me because that isn't true. There are no such things as facts, and I decide the meaning of what is written in my textbooks. I'm the one who chooses the interpretation of any writing, including history and the stories of Columbus"? How are you going to answer, especially in light of what the Encyclopaedia Britannica states about Columbus? This book examines how historical Jesus scholar John Dominic Crossan has dismantled education, TV viewing (by application), and religious studies with his postmodern deconstruction of the text. His theme is "I formulate it here as I see it." Texts and interpretations are out of the mind of Crossan. Using a hypothesis testing technique, the author challenges Crossan's perspective that Jesus's resurrection was an apparition and not a bodily resurrection. Even though he calls on others to "First, read the text," that is not what he does. The philosophical crusher has found him out to be contradictory in his assessment of history in his autobiography and his own writings on the historical Jesus.

Book Cold War on the Airwaves

Download or read book Cold War on the Airwaves written by Nicholas J Schlosser and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2015-11-15 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Founded as a counterweight to the Communist broadcasters in East Germany, Radio in the American Sector (RIAS) became one of the most successful public information operations conducted against the Soviet Bloc. Cold War on the Airwaves examines the Berlin-based organization's history and influence on the political worldview of the people--and government--on the other side of the Iron Curtain. Nicholas J. Schlosser draws on broadcast transcripts, internal memoranda, listener letters, and surveys by the U.S. Information Agency to profile RIAS. Its mission: to undermine the German Democratic Republic with propaganda that, ironically, gained in potency by obeying the rules of objective journalism. Throughout, Schlosser examines the friction inherent in such a contradictory project and propaganda's role in shaping political culture. He also portrays how RIAS's primarily German staff influenced its outlook and how the organization both competed against its rivals in the GDR and pushed communist officials to alter their methods in order to keep listeners. From the occupation of Berlin through the airlift to the construction of the Berlin Wall, Cold War on the Airwaves offers an absorbing view of how public diplomacy played out at a flashpoint of East-West tension.
