Book excerpt: When Captain Jay Shackleton of the cartography starship Abhysal finds himself and his crew thrown across the galaxy, he has no idea how they are going to get back home to earth. Although his five-member crew are gifted space travellers and scientists, the situation seems hopeless. However, their luck seems to change when a seemingly friendly alien trade association, the Squeltrems, picks them up. In exchange for their technical knowledge, they'll be able to hitch a ride back to earth. This seems to be a good deal, and the crew starts full of enthusiasm for the development of new subspace technologies together with their new Alien friends from the research department. Until they realize that the peaceful Squeltrem Association is not so peaceful after all and that they are space pirates who like to plunder whole planets. As if that is not bad enough, another species is in the process of hijacking planets to steal their resources... Set in the 24th century, Fabienne Gschwind's "Star Map" is an epic science fiction adventure novel that will captivate readers and transport them to another world. For anyone who is a fan of classic sci-fi mixed with a cast of intriguing characters, science and comedy, this is the perfect read. Add it to your arsenal today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Badlands, everyone has their own agenda. System governments, planetary authorities, and large corporations want to expand their power, wealth, and authority. They use killing, robbing, and intimidating as methods of persuasion and governance. Slavery has big profits and low overhead. The Goldenes Tor Imperial Empire borders the Badlands and play by the same rules while working to annex this wild region. The Aurora Empire opposes the Goldenes Tor policy and maintains a small Royal Navy Badlands squadron under the command of Captain Skyler Mallory to dispute their claim. Raferty Hawkins, captain of the pirate vessel Predator, also has an agenda. He wants to drive out the hated Goldenes Tor, rein in the local governments and big corporations, and give local natives control of their own destiny. He is quite willing to kill people to achieve these ends. With crew members such as Tactical and Baby Doll and the support of Captain Shane Delacruz of Vindictive and the crazy Captain Killian O'Hare of Nemesis, Hawkins had been fighting the oppressive Badlands forces for years. But now the status quo is about to be turned upside down. The Orion Confederation is far away with no interest in the Badlands. However, an Orion squadron has entered the region to destroy Mallory's command as part of a campaign of surprise attacks on the Aurora Empire. The Orion squadron and their Goth escort ships make one fatal mistake. They destroy a pirate settlement of women and children. Now Hawkins and the ships of Pirate Flotilla One ally themselves with Captain Mallory against a common enemy. Two forces of unlikely allies maneuver for advantage across a cold, dark battlefield. The outcome of this campaign will shape the Badlands for decades to come.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantum mechanics is said to be the most successful physical theory ever. It is, in fact, unique in its success when applied to concrete physical problems. On the other hand, however, it raises profound conceptual problems that are equally unprecedented. Quantum logic, the topic of this volume, can be described as an attempt to cast light on the puzzle of quantum mechanics from the point of view of logic. Since its inception in the famous 1936 paper by Birkhoff and von Neumann entitled, "The logic of quantum mechanics, quantum logic has undergone an enormous development. Various schools of thought and approaches have emerged, and there are a variety of technical results. The chapters of this volume constitute a comprehensive presentation of the main schools, approaches and results in the field of quantum logic. - Authored by eminent scholars in the field - Material presented is of recent origin representing the frontier of the subject - Provides the most comprehensive and varied discussion of Quantum Mechanics available

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter Dembowski was born in Berlin on April 1, 1928. After studying mathematics at the University of Frankfurt of Main, he pursued his graduate studies at Brown Unviersity and the University of Illinois, mainly with R. Baer. Dembowski returned to Frankfurt in 1956. Shortly before his premature death in January 1971, he had been appointed to a chair at the University of Tuebingen. Dembowski taught at the universities of Frankfurt and Tuebingen and - as visiting Professor - in London (Queen Mary College), Rome, and Madison, WI. Dembowski's chief research interest lay in the connections between finite geometries and group theory. His book "Finite Geometries" brought together essentially all that was known at that time about finite geometrical structures, including key results of the author, in a unified and structured perspective. This book became a standard reference as soon as it appeared in 1968. It influenced the expansion of combinatorial geometric research, and left its trace also in neighbouring areas.

At the end of 2385, in a significant shift of its goals from military back to exploratory, Starfleet sent Captain Benjamin Sisko and the crew of the U.S.S. Robinson on an extended mission into the Gamma Quadrant. Tasked with a yearlong assignment to travel unknown regions, they set out to fulfill the heart of Starfleet’s charter: to explore strange new worlds, and to seek out new life and new civilizations. But now three months into the mission, their first contact with an alien species comes in the form of an unprovoked attack on the Robinson. With the ship’s crew suddenly incapacitated, seventy-eight of the 1,300 aboard are abducted—including Sisko’s daughter, Rebecca. But Rebecca had already been kidnapped years earlier by a Bajoran religious zealot, part of a sect believing that her birth fulfilled the prophecy of the arrival of the Infant Avatar. Does her disappearance now have anything to do with the harrowing events of the past? And for what purposes have these enemies taken Sisko’s daughter and the rest of the missing?

Book Matrix Algorithms

    Book Details:
  • Author : G. W. Stewart
  • Publisher : SIAM
  • Release : 2001-08-30
  • ISBN : 0898718058
  • Pages : 489 pages

Download or read book Matrix Algorithms written by G. W. Stewart and published by SIAM. This book was released on 2001-08-30 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second volume in a projected five-volume survey of numerical linear algebra and matrix algorithms. It treats the numerical solution of dense and large-scale eigenvalue problems with an emphasis on algorithms and the theoretical background required to understand them. The notes and reference sections contain pointers to other methods along with historical comments. The book is divided into two parts: dense eigenproblems and large eigenproblems. The first part gives a full treatment of the widely used QR algorithm, which is then applied to the solution of generalized eigenproblems and the computation of the singular value decomposition. The second part treats Krylov sequence methods such as the Lanczos and Arnoldi algorithms and presents a new treatment of the Jacobi-Davidson method. These volumes are not intended to be encyclopedic, but provide the reader with the theoretical and practical background to read the research literature and implement or modify new algorithms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In addition to their obvious roles in American politics, race and gender also work in hidden ways to profoundly influence the way we think—and vote—about a vast array of issues that don’t seem related to either category. As Nicholas Winter reveals in Dangerous Frames, politicians and leaders often frame these seemingly unrelated issues in ways that prime audiences to respond not to the policy at hand but instead to the way its presentation resonates with their deeply held beliefs about race and gender. Winter shows, for example, how official rhetoric about welfare and Social Security has tapped into white Americans’ racial biases to shape their opinions on both issues for the past two decades. Similarly, the way politicians presented health care reform in the 1990s divided Americans along the lines of their attitudes toward gender. Combining cognitive and political psychology with innovative empirical research, Dangerous Frames ultimatelyilluminates the emotional underpinnings of American politics.
