Book excerpt: "Chinese ink painting is one of the oldest continually practiced art forms in the world. It first appeared in China in the fifth century, and soon traveled to Korea and then to Japan. As old and deeply rooted in East Asian aesthetics and meditation as it is, ink painting is credited with influencing the development of Western modern art. Its minimalist approach to painting continues to have enormous appeal. Artist and teacher Sungsook Setton, who learned the techniques with Chinese and Korean masters in her native South Korea, brings new excitement to this age-old art. While teaching the traditional disciplines for holding and using the brush, she shows students how to turn the techniques and inner meditation toward interpreting their own world: city views, music, and the essence of contemporary life"--

Book Healing with Art and Soul

Download or read book Healing with Art and Soul written by Kathy Luethje and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2008-12-18 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fascinating collection of essays contains a variety of perspectives about the use of expressive arts for facilitating physical and emotional healing. Each author within brings a fresh approach and unique experiences to their writing. Within these pages, you will find many ideas for the use of the arts and can learn how to engage the inner layers of the self that allow natural healing processes of the body and soul to flourish. When we fully engage an art modality, we find ourselves in a place in our consciousness that could be called 'healingspace,' where we feel ourselves whole and re-member ourselves as well. From psychic trauma to physical illness, dis-ease of many kinds may be addressed through the various techniques discussed here. The tools offered by some authors are population specific and age appropriate, while several authors have given us the philosophical underpinnings for it all. While the authors within represent the grassroots voices of this new and rapidly expanding field, several of them have developed their own methods for using the arts, and have thriving practices. Our approach is wholistic. Music, visual arts, movement, dance, and poetry are discussed as separate modalities and in combination with one another in a process or flow. The reader will engage in our experiences with these modalities as they have been lived. The complementary CD that accompanies this book will allows the listener to have a full sound experience of toning. If a rationale is needed for establishing arts programs in medical centers or other health facilities, it can be found here. The book offers tools for self development and for group facilitation. Those wanting to expand their healing practice through the use of the arts will find the book to be a faithful guide. Anyone wishing for a fuller understanding of how the arts may work to facilitate healing will find much food for thought within these pages.

Book Touch Me I m for Real

Download or read book Touch Me I m for Real written by Jean Barrett Groves and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2019-09-23 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like most kids, teachers asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. That question was hard to answer as a black girl growing up in Harlem in the 1950s. When I tried to look back beyond my grandmother to understand my family's past, there was an ugly stain on our history left by slavery and then just a dark blur. It was said we came from Africa. Where exactly? I didn't know. There was no connection. When I looked around me, I saw crime, violence, and drugs spreading malignity through the black community. Meanwhile, the old staples—faith and family values—were like walls slowly crumbling down. I glanced ahead, but it was hard to see past things modeled at home, wrong words said or negative messages telegraphed to me in books and media that poo-pooed my potential. They didn't bode well for my future. What was I to do? The only thing I could. I summoned whatever I had in me, used my ghetto beginnings to push against, and then propelled forward. I completed my education, developed a teaching career in the NYC public schools, and bought a house. I felt like I was finally "somebody." A health issue came along and gave me a one-two punch. I became unable to walk and speak. My sense of worth was immediately placed in jeopardy when I joined a new group of disadvantaged—the disabled. I had to climb back up to acceptance and respectability and achieve normalcy. I asked myself, could I find a voice and still make a difference? This book is how I answered that. It is a story about finding strength, hope, and a higher quality of life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All five books in 'Triple Threat Mysteries', a series of cozy mystery novels by Tyler Colins, now in one volume! The Connecticut Corpse Caper: A week-long stay in a creepy oversize Connecticut mansion is replete with hidden passageways, disappearing and reappearing corpses, and seven quirky inheritance recipients. Soon, people start dropping like flies. Donning amateur sleuth caps, Jill and her associates, Rey and Linda, attempt to solve the mystifying murders. Soon, others jump in, and the bumbling, stumbling and mayhem begin. Can You Hula Like Hilo Hattie?: The novice sleuths accept their first official detecting assignment: uncovering the “secret" of an elderly millionaire’s pretty young wife. If they succeed, their newly founded business, The Triple Threat Investigation Agency, will prove a viable venture. But after the wife is found murdered along the sapphire shores of Oahu, the sleuths discover that the deceased woman was not the only one keeping secrets. But who is the murderer? Coco's Nuts: The Triple Threat Investigation Agency private eyes undertake their second major assignment: proving their client, once-socialite-Vassar-grad-turned-trucker Buddy Feuer, isn’t responsible for two murders. She had no motive to kill her boss, infamous entrepreneur Jimmy Picolo, nor did she murder her best friend, Eb Stretta. As the rookie P.I.s strive to uncover a killer amid yet another cast of curious and unconventional characters, they meet up with old acquaintances who may or may not have their best interests at heart. Forever Poi: The ever-proud owners of the Triple Threat Investigation Agency—JJ, Rey, and Linda—have a new case. Who set ablaze two happening Chinatown art galleries, leaving a couple of charcoal-broiled corpses in the rubble? Any number of curious characters in the local art world could be responsible, including a haughty gallery owner with a questionable past and an art consultant living on the edge. If only the gals can figure out the "why", they'll have their "who". Ha-Ha-Ha-Ha: The pretty P.I.s from the Triple Threat Investigation Agency have a new case, thanks to a serial killer who has taken a serious interest in them. The GrimReaperPeeper has challenged them to “play the game”, by his rules. Rules are made to be broken, however... or, at the very least, changed. As the trio attempts to determine who he killer might be, they also need to tackle a couple of other cases, including verifying whether a hubby has a roving eye and ascertaining who is stalking a young, beautiful woman. But can the cases be somehow intertwined?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a teacher of watercolor painting for over 50 years, Rae Andrews has had the privilege of watching students grow in their artistic journeys. Many beginning artists are pushing to adopt a style before they learn the basics, such as drawing and color mixing. Rae doesn't believe any new artist should be in such a rush to develop a style. That will come over time and with practice. Rae is a colorist and loves design. Hence, her paintings tend to have a different look that often surprises the viewers. She's discovered that color and a dramatic choice of value help stimulate the eye and individualize her work. This book contains 10 watercolor demonstrations that showcase the different approaches Rae uses in her paintings. She expects her students to experiment with their own color theory and compositional alternatives by drawing often and trying different subjects. Not every demonstration will resonate with every student, however, the many approaches and techniques that Rae has demonstrated should certainly give any artist more creative options to develop the look they want in their paintings. Watercolor is such a spontaneous medium, full of surprises and sometimes messes, or 'stinkers', as Rae calls them. She advises students to explore the many exciting properties and find their way to keep that magical discovery alive. Rae's motto is: "Dare to be different and above all, have fun!"
