Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book to put the sacred and sensuous bronze statues from India’s Chola dynasty in social context From the ninth through the thirteenth century, the Chola dynasty of southern India produced thousands of statues of Hindu deities, whose physical perfection was meant to reflect spiritual beauty and divine transcendence. During festivals, these bronze sculptures—including Shiva, referred to in a saintly vision as “the thief who stole my heart”—were adorned with jewels and flowers and paraded through towns as active participants in Chola worship. In this richly illustrated book, leading art historian Vidya Dehejia introduces the bronzes within the full context of Chola history, culture, and religion. In doing so, she brings the bronzes and Chola society to life before our very eyes. Dehejia presents the bronzes as material objects that interacted in meaningful ways with the people and practices of their era. Describing the role of the statues in everyday activities, she reveals not only the importance of the bronzes for the empire, but also little-known facets of Chola life. She considers the source of the copper and jewels used for the deities, proposing that the need for such resources may have influenced the Chola empire’s political engagement with Sri Lanka. She also investigates the role of women patrons in bronze commissions and discusses the vast public records, many appearing here in translation for the first time, inscribed on temple walls. From the Cholas’ religious customs to their agriculture, politics, and even food, The Thief Who Stole My Heart offers an expansive and complete immersion in a community still accessible to us through its exquisite sacred art. Book Come Dance with Me Through Words of Thoughts

Download or read book Come Dance with Me Through Words of Thoughts written by Kaltrina Ventimiglia and published by Strategic Book Publishing & Rights Agency. This book was released on 2014-12-11 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Live life through the truth inside you. Don’t let shadows of challenge take away the light that you are born with it. Use your kindness that sleeps inside your heart, sun, moon, stars, and rain, because these are part of you. Remember … life begins by loving your soul. Most of my poems are spiritual, and some of them may sound like a message, but they all have one purpose: Readers should find themselves somewhere inside those lines and be able to see their own emotions, or be able to understand others. This way they can share, because in life we are supposed to learn from each other’s experiences, without any reservations or judgment. We live in such a fast pace that we don’t have time anymore to think about the simple and basic things of life. In this book, I have some poems that remind us that we need to stop for a moment and look around us, so we can stay in touch with ourselves. From time to time it’s good to get away from everything. Just grab this book to try to slow down time for ourselves. Reading poems is like healing your soul. You never know when somebody else’s emotion can open doors for your own soul to reach for. And that’s why I want my readers to be able to read the poems with a smile on their face and say, “Yes, I’m ready for my next day” and “I see a good one is coming tomorrow.”

Book The Finished Masterpiece

Download or read book The Finished Masterpiece written by Pepper Winters and published by Pepper Winters. This book was released on 2021-02-04 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time since release, grab THE BODY PAINTER & THE LIVING CANVAS in one boxed set edition! Read this entire, complete romantic duet in one ebook. Included in this Boxed Set Edition: THE BODY PAINTER “Must be slim, able to stand for long periods of time, and be impervious to the cold.” The headline caught my attention. “Hours are negotiable, pay is minimal, clothing absolutely forbidden.” The second line piqued my curiosity. “Able to hold your bladder and tongue, refrain from opinions or suggestions, and be the perfect living canvas.” The third made me scowl. “Other attributes required: non-ticklish, contortionist, and obedient. Must also enjoy being studied while naked in a crowd.” The fourth made me shudder. “Call or email ‘YOUR SKIN, HIS CANVAS’ if interested in applying.” The final made my heart race. I should’ve kept scrolling past the advertisement. I should’ve applied for the boring receptionist job at minimum wage. I should’ve clicked on any other job where I got to keep my clothes on. But I didn’t. I applied. My interview is tomorrow… And THE LIVING CANVAS “Must be brave, stubborn, and impervious to the tempers of loved ones.” The first line hissed with history. “Hours are endless, pay is non-existence, quitting absolutely forbidden.” The second line ached with truth. “Able to function on no sleep, refrain from running when times get hard, and be more than just a living canvas but a lover.” The third thrummed with honesty. “Other attributes required: forgiving, opinionated, and not afraid to tell me when I’m wrong. Must also enjoy being touched and kissed at any time of my choosing.” The fourth glowed with promise. “Call or email ‘YOUR HEART, HIS SOUL’ if interested in applying.” The final made my future unfold. The advert was so similar to one I should never have applied for. A twist of fate that brought two destined people back together. A job I would take in a heartbeat if the employer could offer such terms. But I wasn’t free. Neither was Gil. Therefore, my interview could never happen. Reviews: No one does tortured souls like Pepper! - Sue, Goodreads Couldn't put it down. Book excerpt: Dancing Women: Female Bodies Onstage is a spectacular and timely contribution to dance history, recasting canonical dance since the early nineteenth century in terms of a feminist perspective. Setting the creation of specific dances in socio-political and cultural contexts, Sally Banes shows that choreographers have created representations of women that are shaped by - and that in part shape - society's continuing debates about sexuality and female identity. Broad in its scope and compelling in its argument Dancing Women: * provides a series of re-readings of the canon, from Romantic and Russian Imperial ballet to contemporary ballet and modern dance * investigates the gaps between plot and performance that create sexual and gendered meanings * examines how women's agency is created in dance through aspects of choreographic structure and style * analyzes a range of women's images - including brides, mistresses, mothers, sisters, witches, wraiths, enchanted princesses, peasants, revolutionaries, cowgirls, scientists, and athletes - as well as the creation of various women's communities on the dance stage * suggests approaches to issues of gender in postmodern dance Using an interpretive strategy different from that of other feminist dance historians, who have stressed either victimization or celebration of women, Banes finds a much more complex range of cultural representations of gender identities.

Book The Making of a Pastor Chaplain

Download or read book The Making of a Pastor Chaplain written by Barbara Helen Maisonneuve-Wilson and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-12 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CAUTION This book may introduce you to the stark realities of a modern-day pilgrim who seeks the fuller life at the feet of Jesus. No pat answers. No attempt to resolve the mysterious interface between God's will and his willingness to let us muddle through the mess of life. The author tells the simple but engaging story of her struggles, aspirations, frustrations, and satisfaction of walking with Jesus the best that she could. Don't be annoyed at her humanity¯accept it as a humble gift and insight into your own experience. Barb brings us fascinating insights into the different stages of her faith's development and a challenge to reflect upon our own. Certainly good food for great thoughts! Rev. Stephen W. Chaloner, B.Th M.T.S. Regional Director PAOC Africa ----------------------------------------------------------- As I read through this book I kept thinking that this evolution should be read and even studied as a reflection, which is necessary for a person entering the ministry. As Wilson shares her life, family, and ministry events and memories, she has taken the opportunity to openly expose her experiences centered against the backdrop of the seven life stages of recurrent development (1) in the context of her Faith walk. The transparency is refreshing, when in my reading, I found that generally speaking, clergies have a hard time sharing openly their life experiences. Wilson, in her book, encourages pastors, ministers, and clergies to come clean as we live and preach and teach in our respective contexts. By the "storytelling" of her life and faith development, she has given the reader a glimpse of her faith and relationship with Jesus Christ and how this relates to family, friends, community, and ministry interaction with other people; thus, allowing the reader to face life with hope. I would recommend anyone entering a ministry in any context to read this book in order to gain an appreciation of what shapes a ministry and some ways of processing our lived experiences, and forgiving ourselves for our sins and shortcomings. Thank you, Barbara, for giving us your readers, insights from a distance in the "Making of a Pastor/Chaplain" (1) Robert Kegan, "The Evolving Self, Problem and Process in Human Development." Phillip J. Robillard, Minister of "Faith Community" in downtown Toronto, Ontario. ----------------------------------------------------------- Sometimes, we may take the events of our lives for granted; and, we may be lulled into leaving well enough alone, even though deep down we have a sense that something is missing or not quite right. At other times, we may thirst for a greater depth of meaning in what we are about. As we examine our lives, we may become more aware of experiences, good or bad, associated with past, present or foreseen events. What we may be less aware of, in the moment, is the part we can play in shaping our personal experience of whatever takes place into a more satisfying life journey. This book illustrates how the author, Barbara Wilson, reflected deeply on pivotal life events which, if left unexamined, would have diminished greatly the personal meaning she was able to harvest in her journey through life. She believed in and exercised her inner capacity to move beyond the erstwhile story line of the world into which she was born, by re-visioning and re-shaping experienced events into a living story with satisfactory space both for personal meaning-making and for enabling her to live her preferred values. Her candid reflection on events in her life, many of them painful, others full of joy, as well as her insightful evaluations of these stepping stones and her courageous choices for new directions will inspire and motivate many to take a second look at how they, too, can answer for themselves the pivotal questions: Am I satisfied with my life experience? Who do I want to be now? Who do I want to become? How do I reshap
