Book excerpt: The terrifying first use of nuclear weapons over Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945 was the most controversial act of warfare in history, dramatically ending the Second World War but ushering in the age of mass destruction. Yet it was also the climax of a story that extends beyond Japan and Washington: the culmination of decades of scientific achievement and centuries of colonial exploitation. Snake Dance is the account of a journey that turned into a quest to discover how humanity reaches this point. Patrick Marnham travels from the opulent nineteenth-century palaces of King Leopold II of Belgium, built with riches plundered from the Congo, to the lethally derelict nuclear reactor of modern-day Kinshasa. He follows the shipment of Congolese uranium to the deserts of New Mexico for the Manhattan Projectâe(tm)s secret test detonation. Here he uncovers the legacies of Robert Oppenheimer and Aby Warburg, two âe~mad geniusesâe(tm) who confronted the devastating power of twentieth-century science in very different ways. Both men travelled to New Mexico. Oppenheimer was honoured for buiding a bomb, the ancestor of weapons that have enslaved humanity. Warburg, condemned to obscurity and confined to a mental hospital, regained his sanity by studying the rituals of the Native Americans of the Southwest who, for thousands of years, practiced the ritual of the 'snake dance' in an attempt to harness the power of lightening. And it was in New Mexico, at Los Alamos, that the ultimate act of playing God was realised. The circle is closed in Japan.. Faced with the catastrophe at the Fukushima Nuclear Plant in March 2011, scientific man, like the snake dancers, is faced with a power beyond his control. Spanning three continents and the history of civilisation, Snake Dance is at once an intrepid intellectual adventure and a wake-up call for mankind.

Book Snake Dancing

Download or read book Snake Dancing written by Roberta Sykes and published by Allen & Unwin. This book was released on 1998-08-01 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Snake Dancing is the second volume of Roberta Sykes' three volume autobiography, Snake Dreaming. It chronicles Roberta's increasing politicisation and involvement in the Black movement to the time of her invitation from Harvard to take up postgraduate study in the United States. Struggling to overcome the effects of her ordeals in Snake Cradle, Roberta Sykes gradually moves into the national spotlight as a writer and as First Secretary of the Aboriginal Embassy set up in a tent on the lawns of Parliament House. She details the dangerous, demanding and sometimes lonely life of an itinerant activist, and brings a human perspective to events that were often headline news around the world. Snake Dancing is essential reading for those wishing to understand the complex nature of interaction between the races in Australia's recent history. The first volume of her autobiography, Snake Cradle, won the 1997 Age Book of the Year and the 1998 Nitta Kibble awards, and those who were moved by it will continue to be engrossed by Roberta Sykes' remarkable life. 'Roberta... that you not only survived but triumphed is an incredible tribute to you and the human spirit.' - David Suzuki 'Sykes explores the depth of the personal veneer surrounding every Australian who is, like it or not, part of the hidden history of black and white contact in this country. Secrets taken to the grave choke up every cemetery in Australia. A genuine national pride must also accept and accommodate the shame. Sykes' intricate and courageously honest story of her life may help us understand why this needs to be so.' - Alexis Wright, Australian Book Review 'Reading Roberta Sykes is to be engaged by a great tale and by and uncompromisingly fine writer.' - Janine Burke, The Age

Book Lightning Symbol and Snake Dance Aby Warburg and Pueblo Art

Download or read book Lightning Symbol and Snake Dance Aby Warburg and Pueblo Art written by Aby Warburg and published by Hatje Cantz. This book was released on 2022-03-21 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first presentation of Aby Warburg's rarely seen Pueblo art collection, from his famous 1895-96 visit to the US In 1895, the great German art historian and theorist Aby Warburg (1866-1929) came to the US, where he spent the bulk of his time meeting with Indigenous Americans. The encounter produced two famous works: his 1923 lecture on the Hopi snake ritual, and a body of photographs--both of them much discussed by art historians. Almost unknown until now, however, was the collection of objects he acquired from Pueblo tribes throughout the American Southwest, which he later donated to the Museum fur Völkerkunde (today the Museum am Rothenbaum) in Hamburg. Following Warburg's transdisciplinary approach, this substantial publication examines his guiding principles in assembling his collection, as well as his reading of Pueblo art and culture. The fascination of the Hopi snake ritual among Warburg's contemporaries is highlighted, as is the reception history of the text. Also represented here are the views and strategies of Hopi officials, which have previously been neglected in this context, to regain cultural sovereignty.

Book The Dancing Lares and the Serpent in the Garden

Download or read book The Dancing Lares and the Serpent in the Garden written by Harriet I. Flower and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2017-09-26 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most pervasive gods in ancient Rome had no traditional mythology attached to them, nor was their worship organized by elites. Throughout the Roman world, neighborhood street corners, farm boundaries, and household hearths featured small shrines to the beloved lares, a pair of cheerful little dancing gods. These shrines were maintained primarily by ordinary Romans, and often by slaves and freedmen, for whom the lares cult provided a unique public leadership role. In this comprehensive and richly illustrated book, the first to focus on the lares, Harriet Flower offers a strikingly original account of these gods and a new way of understanding the lived experience of everyday Roman religion. Weaving together a wide range of evidence, Flower sets forth a new interpretation of the much-disputed nature of the lares. She makes the case that they are not spirits of the dead, as many have argued, but rather benevolent protectors—gods of place, especially the household and the neighborhood, and of travel. She examines the rituals honoring the lares, their cult sites, and their iconography, as well as the meaning of the snakes often depicted alongside lares in paintings of gardens. She also looks at Compitalia, a popular midwinter neighborhood festival in honor of the lares, and describes how its politics played a key role in Rome’s increasing violence in the 60s and 50s BC, as well as in the efforts of Augustus to reach out to ordinary people living in the city’s local neighborhoods. A reconsideration of seemingly humble gods that were central to the religious world of the Romans, this is also the first major account of the full range of lares worship in the homes, neighborhoods, and temples of ancient Rome.

Book Hopi Snake Ceremonies

Download or read book Hopi Snake Ceremonies written by Jesse Walter Fewkes and published by Avanyu Publishing. This book was released on 2000 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hopi Snake dance was first described in 1884 and through many articles over the last 100 years has become one of the best known of all aboriginal American Indian ceremonies. Yet, despite its notoriety, it was, and continues to be, little understood by those who are not Hopi Indians. Visitors to the Hopi's remote reservation in the Arizona desert watch in amazement as members of the Hopi Snake Society, males of all ages, dance with living rattlesnakes clenched between their teeth. The ceremony ensures plenty of spring water and abundant rain for the maturing crops, and dramatizes the legend of the Snake Clan as the Snake Priests wash the snakes ritually, and carry them in their teeth during the public dance. This revised edition of the classic Bureau of American Ethnology reports from 1894-98 includes a new preface from the publisher, and additional period photographs of the ceremony.
