Download or read book Turning Pointe written by Chloe Angyal and published by Bold Type Books. This book was released on 2021-05-04 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A reckoning with one of our most beloved art forms, whose past and present are shaped by gender, racial, and class inequities—and a look inside the fight for its future Every day, in dance studios all across America, legions of little children line up at the barre to take ballet class. This time in the studio shapes their lives, instilling lessons about gender, power, bodies, and their place in the world both in and outside of dance. In Turning Pointe, journalist Chloe Angyal captures the intense love for ballet that so many dancers feel, while also grappling with its devastating shortcomings: the power imbalance of an art form performed mostly by women, but dominated by men; the impossible standards of beauty and thinness; and the racism that keeps so many people of color out of ballet. As the rigid traditions of ballet grow increasingly out of step with the modern world, a new generation of dancers is confronting these issues head on, in the studio and on stage. For ballet to survive the twenty-first century and forge a path into a more socially just future, this reckoning is essential.
Download or read book American Dance written by Margaret Fuhrer and published by Voyageur Press. This book was released on 2015-11-30 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most comprehensive, beautiful book ever to be published on dance in America. "We look at the dance to impart the sensation of living in an affirmation of life, to energize the spectator into keener awareness of the vigor, the mystery, the humor, the variety, and the wonder of life. This is the function of the American dance." Groundbreaking choreographer Martha Graham deeply understood the power and complexity of dance--particularly as it evolved in her home country. American Dance, by critic and journalist Margaret Fuhrer, traces that richly complex evolution. From Native American dance rituals to dance in the digital age, American Dance explores centuries of innovation, individual genius and collaborative exploration. Some of its stories - such as Fred Astaire dancing on the ceiling or Alvin Ailey founding the trailblazing company that bears his name - will be familiar to anyone who loves dance. The complex origins of tap, for instance, or the Puritan outrage against "profane and promiscuous dancing" during the early years of the United States, are as full of mystery and humor as Graham describes. These various developments have never before been presented in a single book, making American Dance the most comprehensive work on the subject to date. Breakdancing, musical-theater dance, disco, ballet, jazz, ballroom, modern, hula, the Charleston, the Texas two-step, swing--these are just some of the forms celebrated in this riveting volume Hundreds of photographs accompany the text, making American Dance as visually captivating as the works it depicts.

Download or read book What Are You Looking at Bitch written by Mohsen El-guindy and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The novel is a love story between Hashem, a business magnate from the Middle East, and Angela, a rich American woman running a company she inherited from her father. Angela was asexual and lacked sexual inclinations toward men. She was jealous and arrogant and inherited from her father his tough nature and foul mouth. When she got mad, she would attack her opponents with offensive words. She also suffered from a neurological disorder. When she got nervous, her right hand would shake involuntarily. A financial crisis took Angelas company to the ground, and she was forced to put it up for sale in the market with a cheap price. Hashem, who also invests in buying ruined companies, heard about her crisis and came to buy her out. Angela suddenly found herself strongly attracted to Hashem, and they fell in love with each other and got married. Angela gave birth to a girl they called Aisha and a boy they called Amr. The river of life glided along beautifully between them until Hashems past reared its ugly head and destroyed their marriage. Countess Adelle von Vetsera, Hashems ex-mistress, who lost her mind when Hashem married Angela, came to take back her love. The two women quarreled over Hashem. In one of her furious quarrels with Hashem, Angela rushed to her car. Her daughter, Aisha, rushed into the passenger seat, yelling at her not to drive. Angela ploughed the car right into a trailer. Angela was the only survivor in the car, and Aisha died. Angela faced charges of being drunk behind the wheel and killing her daughter. She was sentenced to three years in prison. Hashem refused to live with Angela any longer and returned to his first love, Adele. Adele gave birth to a baby girl and called her Aisha to please Hashem. Adele died from cancer. Hashem, however, refused to return to Angela, and being long forsaken made her emotional status grow rapidly worse. Years of abandonment passed, and Hashem returned to Angela in the end on the condition that she must behave and stop uttering dirty words. She accepted wholeheartedly. But did she fulfill her promise? This is what the novel tells.
