Book Wait Till You See Me Dance

Download or read book Wait Till You See Me Dance written by Deb Olin Unferth and published by Graywolf Press. This book was released on 2017-03-21 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Deb Olin Unferth’s stories are so smart, fast, full of heart, and distinctive in voice—each an intense little thought-system going out earnestly in search of strange new truths. What an important and exciting talent.”—George Saunders For more than ten years, Deb Olin Unferth has been publishing startlingly askew, wickedly comic, cutting-edge fiction in magazines such as Granta, Harper’s Magazine, McSweeney’s, NOON, and The Paris Review. Her stories are revered by some of the best American writers of our day, but until now there has been no stand-alone collection of her short fiction. Wait Till You See Me Dance consists of several extraordinary longer stories as well as a selection of intoxicating very short stories. In the chilling “The First Full Thought of Her Life,” a shooter gets in position while a young girl climbs a sand dune. In “Voltaire Night,” students compete to tell a story about the worst thing that ever happened to them. In “Stay Where You Are,” two oblivious travelers in Central America are kidnapped by a gunman they assume to be an insurgent—but the gunman has his own problems. An Unferth story lures you in with a voice that seems amiable and lighthearted, but it swerves in sudden and surprising ways that reveal, in terrifying clarity, the rage, despair, and profound mournfulness that have taken up residence at the heart of the American dream. These stories often take place in an exaggerated or heightened reality, a quality that is reminiscent of the work of Donald Barthelme, Lorrie Moore, and George Saunders, but in Unferth’s unforgettable collection she carves out territory that is entirely her own.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An astonishingly beautiful book. The best gay novel written by anyone of our generation.”—Harper’s “Through the sweat and haze of longing come piercing insights – about the closeness of gay male friendship, about the vanity and imperfections of men. The more one reads the novel, we realise that what Holleran has given us is our very own queer (queerer?) Great Gatsby: its decadence, its fear, its violence, its ecstasy, its transience.”—The Guardian Andrew Holleran’s landmark novel of a young man's search for love and companionship in New York’s emerging gay world in the 1970s, with a new introduction by Garth Greenwell. Young, astonishingly beautiful, and tired of living a lie, Anthony Malone trades life as a seemingly straight small-town lawyer for the decadence of New York’s emerging gay scene—an odyssey that takes him from Manhattan’s Everard baths and after hour discos, to lavish orgies on Fire Island and parks after dark. Rescuing Malone from a possessive lover and shepherding him through his immersion in this life of fierce joys and cheap truths is the flamboyant Sutherland, a high-camp quintessential queen. But for Malone, the endless city nights and Fire Island days are close to burning out, and despite Sutherland’s abundant attentiveness and glittering world-weary wisdom, Malone soon realizes what he is truly looking for may not be found in these beautiful places, where life is crowded, and people are forever outrunning their own desires and death.

Book That Which Brings Us Together

Download or read book That Which Brings Us Together written by Bob Franklin and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2018-05-16 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two boys—a Brooklyn Jew and a Mid-western farmer—each possessing no more than a stereotype regarding one another when they meet, find themselves randomly thrust together in their first weeks of college life. As each seeks to understand what it means to grow up, they find a connection so strong, that neither religion, nor upbringing, nor the prejudices formed by their disparate childhood experiences, can get in the way of their growing friendship. For they find that they share a common humanity, a zest for life and a love of baseball, strong enough to overcome all obstacles. In so doing they build a trust for one another so powerful, it can weather not only the toughest of times but the secrets they ultimately share. That Which Brings Us Together is a saga of two families lives, whose roots date back for generations starting in the 19th century. It is a tale of a decades-long friendship, whose characters share life’s great triumphs as well as its deep, dark challenges. It is a friendship, which only ends with an untimely death. And along the way, we come face to face with the existential question of, how do you find the strength to carry on, when you think that all hope is lost—when all of life’s forces have mounted the perfect storm against you? It is a window into life’s journey—the one that we are all on together and the one that we eventually must face all alone. Living in an age where society is more and more fractured by its perceived divisions, the question is posed—would the world be a better place, if we are willing to open ourselves up to those who seem so different from us? Innocent, heart-warming, sad, often wise, and occasionally surprising, That Which Brings Us Together will leave readers longing for a different time—or committed more than ever, to getting to really know their fellow human beings.

Book Native American Legends Stories Of The Hopi Indians Vol Two

Download or read book Native American Legends Stories Of The Hopi Indians Vol Two written by G.W. Mullins and published by Light Of The Moon Publishing. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Native American Indian culture is known for its rich oral traditions. In many cases there were no written languages to document their histories. The tribes relied on verbal communication to share their customs, history, rituals and legends. The tribal elders used vibrant tales to pass information to the younger generations. These stories were not only related to tribal history but were meant to entertain as well as educate, while preserving their tribal culture. Each time an elder told a story, new life was breathed into it. The telling of the stories gave a revived meaning to the tribe’s past and their relations to the earth and the animals they had depended on for existence. The Hopi Indians culture was and is rich with these stories. With a past stretching back thousands of years, they are one of the oldest living cultures in documented history. The tribe’s teachings relate stories of a great flood and other events dating to ancient times. The Hopi trace their ancestry back to the Ancient Puebloan and Basketmaker cultures. They were responsible for many stone structures and artifacts of the Grand Canyon and across the Southwest. A deeply religious people, they live by the ethic of peace and goodwill. There was a time in Hopi history that when crops were harvested, religious ceremonies had been performed, and the winter wood had been collected. It was at this time that the people broke out into dance and story-telling. It was a time of sharing a rich history.  With this book, that time is now. Included in this book, which is one of two volumes is a huge collection of the stories of the Hopi Indians. Without books and without writing the Hopi have an extensive literature. These stories have been collected with the main purpose of preserving the ancient stories of Native American life. Over the years, many collectors have recorded several versions of some of these tales. So keep in mind there is some variation to what has been collected. You are invited to enjoy the culture and as in true Native tradition, share these stories with the next generation.
