Book Batman and the Multiplicity of Identity

Download or read book Batman and the Multiplicity of Identity written by Jeffrey A. Brown and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-20 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concentrating primarily on contemporary depictions of Batman in the comic books, this book analyzes why Batman is so immensely popular right now in America and globally, and how the fictional Dark Knight reveals both new cultural concerns and longstanding beliefs about American values. The organizing premise is that while Batman is perceived as a very clearly defined character, he is open to a wide range of interpretations and depictions in the comics (what Henry Jenkins refers to as "multiplicities"), each of which allows access to different cultural issues. The idea of Batman functions as an anchoring point out of which multiple Batmen, or Batman-like characters, can occupy different positions: Grim Batman, Gay Batman, Female Batman, Black Batman, Cute Batman, and so on. Each iteration opens up a discussion of different cultural issues pertinent to modern society, such as sexuality, ethnicity, feminism and familial relationships.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The final installment in its respective series, Reviews by Cat Ellington: The Complete Anthology, Vol. 9, presented in a neutral hue of Teal, marks the end of the first era in the literary criticism of its author, Cat Ellington. Capping a 42-year-old collection—from 1979 to 2021—of analyses that began with Reviews by Cat Ellington: The Complete Anthology, Vol. 1, Book 9 features Ellington's witty—and typical—take on a diverse set of great (and not so great) works of fiction and nonfiction, including Creepy Teacher by Mackie Malone, Madhouse by Miguel Estrada, The Papyrus Empire (Empire Saga 1) by Niels Saunders, You Are Not Alone by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen, 29 Seconds by T.M. Logan, The Escape Room by Megan Goldin, and many more. Once again, Ellington brings her energetic vibe and no-nonsense approach to the proverbial table, composing the insightful and comprehensive analysis that has become her trademark. And with that, she ends the first era of her one-of-a-kind literary criticism on an enrapturing note. So settle down, why don't you, and prepare to lose yourself in the analytical creativity of its wondrously original, ever admired, undiluted, pleasantly fun-filled, and incredibly thought-provoking authorship. Reviews by Cat Ellington. A unique critique.

Book The Detective s Companion in Crime Fiction

Download or read book The Detective s Companion in Crime Fiction written by Lucy Andrew and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-07-24 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to establish the position of the sidekick character in the crime and detective fiction literary genres. It re-evaluates the traditional view that the sidekick character in these genres is often overlooked as having a small, generic or singular role—either to act as the foil to the detective in order to accentuate their own abilities at solving crimes, or else to simply tell the story to the reader. Instead, essays in the collection explore the representations and functions of the detective’s sidekick across a range of forms and subgenres of crime fiction. By incorporating forms such as children’s detective fiction, comics and graphic novels and film and television alongside the more traditional fare of novels and short stories, this book aims to break down the boundaries that sometimes exist between these forms, using the sidekick as a defining thread to link them together into a wider conceptual argument that covers a broad range of crime narratives.

Book The Boy Detective in Early British Children s Literature

Download or read book The Boy Detective in Early British Children s Literature written by Lucy Andrew and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-19 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book maps the development of the boy detective in British children’s literature from the mid-nineteenth to the early-twentieth century. It explores how this liminal figure – a boy operating within a man’s world – addresses adult anxieties about boyhood and the boy’s transition to manhood. It investigates the literary, social and ideological significance of a vast array of popular detective narratives appearing in ‘penny dreadfuls’ and story papers which were aimed primarily at working-class boys. This study charts the relationship between developments in the representation of the fictional boy detective and changing expectations of and attitudes towards real-life British boys during a period where the boy’s role in the future of the Empire was a key concern. It emphasises the value of the early fictional boy detective as an ideological tool to condition boy readers to fulfil adult desires and expectations of what boyhood and, in the future, proper manhood should entail. It will be of particular importance to scholars working in the fields of children’s literature, crime fiction and popular culture.

Book Why Superman Doesn t Take Over The World

Download or read book Why Superman Doesn t Take Over The World written by J. Brian O’Roark and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-17 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do heroes fight each other? Why do villains keep trying even though they almost never win? Why don't heroes simply take over the world? Economics and comics may seem to be a world apart. But in the hands of economics professor and comic book hero aficionado Brian O’Roark, the two form a powerful alliance. With brilliant deadpan enthusiasm he shows how the travails of superheroes can explain the building blocks of economics, and how economics explains the mysteries of superhero behavior. Spider-Man's existential doubts revolve around opportunity costs; Wonder Woman doesn't have a sidekick because she has a comparative advantage; game theory sheds light on the battle between Captain America and Iron Man; the Joker keeps committing crimes because of the Peltzman effect; and utility curves help us decide who is the greatest superhero of all. Why Superman Doesn't Take Over the World probes the motivations of our favorite heroes, and reveals that the characters in the comics may have powers we dont, but they are still beholden to the laws of economics.
