Book An Integrated Treatment and Reuse System of Dairy Wastewater a Case Study in the State of Hawaii

Download or read book An Integrated Treatment and Reuse System of Dairy Wastewater a Case Study in the State of Hawaii written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Milk parlor wastewater in a dairy operation in Hawaii was investigated for its potential treatment and reuse. Two earthen settling ponds were served as settling process and another 10 acres of wetland were planted with California grass to receive the effluent from settling ponds. It was found that the present treatment systems still remained many problems, such as odor, potential groundwater contamination and surface water pollution. The effluent could not meet the requirements for either disposal or reuse. Improving and integrating other cost effective biological treatment component(s) to the existing lagoons is required in order to meet discharge or reuse standards. Several biological treatment technologies were evaluated and investigated as the alternatives. In order to improve these existed problems, a 5-S approach (system existed, short HRT, small investment, simple operation and maintenance, system thinking) is developed. Among the 5-S, development of a higher SRT (Solids Retention Time) for the bioreactor is essential in order to integrate this unit into the other 4-S.A bioreactor, which is the modification of UASB (Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket) reactor, was investigated. It was found that more than 70-75% of TCOD (Total Chemical Oxygen Demand) removal efficiency and biogas production of 1.5l/l/day with CH4 content of 70-75% could be achieved at 8-15g COD/l/day. The unique operation of the developed bio-nest reactor is able to achieve a higher COD removal efficiency with high organic loading rate with simple design and operation. This unique bioreactor is able to provide better sludge distribution and less dead zone compared to the conventional UASB. The process performance, design and operation criteria of this bioreactor were presented, discussed and compared with the existing anaerobic filter reactor and UASB reactor for the treatment of milk parlor wastewater. It was found that this bioreactor is able to operate in the temperature of 22" 2°C compared.

This book was released on 2021-11-08 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dairy industry usually adopts conventional methods of processing various milk-based food products, which can destroy nutrients and minimize organoleptic qualities. An alternative approach for this is the non-conventional method of non-thermal processing techniques. Not only does this enhance the nutritional profile of the various processed products, but increases the consumer acceptability. There are some emerging non-thermal processing techniques such as pulsed light, cold plasma, high pressure processing, ultrasonic, UV pasteurization, or ozone treatments, which can be successfully employed in dairy processing industries to enhance product acceptability, safety, and quality aspects. Non-Thermal Processing Technologies for the Dairy Industry describes several emerging non-thermal processing techniques that can be specially employed for the dairy processing industry. The book narrates the benefits of using pulsed light, cold plasma, high pressure and ultrasonic during processing of various dairy products. Key Features: Addresses techniques used for extraction of functional food components from various dairy products by using super critical CO2 extraction technology. Explains application of ozone and cold plasma technology for treating dairy processing waste waters with efficient recycling aspects. Discusses the importance of using biopreservatives in shelf life extension of several dairy food products. Portrays scope and significant importance of adopting UV pasteurization in processing market milk along with safety and environmental impacts over processing This book solves the issue of waste generation in dairy industries and further advises recovery of such waste for efficient recycling process. In addition to being useful for dairy technologists, it is a great source for academic scholars and students looking to gain knowledge and excel in the non-thermal procesing area.

Book Anaerobic Biodigesters for Human Waste Treatment

Download or read book Anaerobic Biodigesters for Human Waste Treatment written by Mukesh Kumar Meghvansi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-08-21 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The edited book brings out a comprehensive synthesis of latest scientific literature covering various important aspects of anaerobic biodigesters for human waste management that ranges from latest understanding on fundamental concepts/mechanisms of anaerobic biodigestion, modern tools and techniques used in process evaluation, current strategies being recruited for the performance enhancement, and case studies/ success stories across the world on applications of biodigesters used in human waste treatment. The anaerobic biodigestion is a process of break-down of organic waste by anaerobic microorganisms in absence of the oxygen. This process has been conventionally used for treating various types of organic waste including sewage sludge. After optimizing various process parameters, researchers have developed anaerobic biodigesters that have been successfully used for human waste (nigh soil) treatment. The topic of human waste treatment assumes global significance in the wake of UN sustainable Development Goals (SDG) wherein SDG-6 specifically highlights the Sanitation for all by 2030. The anaerobic Biodigester technology has the potential to manage the human waste as well and can contribute immensely in achieving targets of UN-SDG-6. This book is of interest to researchers, academicians, scientists, policy officials and capacity builders. Also the book serves as additional reading material for undergraduate and graduate students of environmental Biotechnology. National and international biotechnologists, environmental engineers and sanitation experts also find this to be a useful read.
