Book excerpt: "'Daingerfield Island' puts the ''i'' in danger: intelligent, imaginative, intriguing. The book is a timely metaphor about the power of alternative facts in a post-truth world.'' --Michael Neff, author of All The Dark We Will Not See ''Wasowicz's promising legal thriller series launch introduces savvy Washington, D.C., defense attorney Mo Katz. Mo is retained by Nate Harding, who the police believe was involved in the drowning of Libby Lewis, the chief of staff for the Senate Intelligence Committee, who was found floating in the Potomac River near Daingerfield Island. But Mo doesn't know that Harding has been working with a shady CIA operative, Jack Smith, who planned to lure a lone wolf terrorist into a trap on the island with Lewis's help. Lewis was going to pass him a flash drive that ostensibly contained details to facilitate a hit on a 'flamboyant Arabian sheik,' but that daring covert operation went awry. Smith convinces Harding to offer himself up as a temporary murder suspect, to give Smith a chance to cover his tracks and to develop a new plan to catch the terrorist. Mo must look beyond his new client s questionable representation to learn the truth about the congressional staffer's death. Wasowicz's experience as a trial attorney is put to good use in courtroom scenes, and he's equally adept with action sequences.'' --Book Life/Publisher's Weekly

Book excerpt: "Spite House," book seven of the Old Town mystery series, continues the series begun by John Adam Wasowicz in 2017 with "Daingerfield Island," which introduced readers to attorney Mo Katz and his entourage of crime solvers. Katz, now returned to private practice after service as U.S. Attorney, accepts the case of Roxie Neele, a local cremudgeon who lives in a 'spite house,' one of a handful of tiny structures built in Old Town in the 1800s to "spite" the neighbors. Roxie stands accused of murdering her neighbor Trudy Vine with a poison cupcake. Roxie's case unfolds against the backdrop of the ongoing killing spree of Rose Bud, a serial killer who terrorizes the community. Unknown to others, Roxie has elicited Mo's support in an effort to end Rose Bud's reign of terror. She believes that only Mo Katz possesses the legal acumen to spin a defense to catch a criminal in an unrelated case. Once Mo discerns Roxie's motivation, the twosome unite in a spirited effort to expose the serial killer, who is hiding in plain sight. "Spite House" combines courtroom scenes with a fast-paced narrative set in Old Town. The story culminates as Rose Bud -- whose identity has been revealed -- seeks to punish Roxie and Mo for unmasking him by burning down the spite house. "Spite House" is a continuation of the series based in Old Town Alexandria. Along with Mo Katz, the series features Deputy Police Chief Sherry Stone, private investigator Curtis Santana, legal researcher Mai Lin, city prosecutor David Reese, social worker Abby Snowe, and U.S. Senator Abraham Lowenstein. Additional titles in the series include "Jones Point" (2019), "Slaters Lane" (2020), "Roaches Run" (2021), Gadsby's Corner" (2022), and "Hazel Falls" (2023).

Download or read book This Is for the Mara Salvatrucha written by Samuel Logan and published by Hachette Books. This book was released on 2009-07-07 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like any American teenager, Brenda Paz spent much of her time with her friends. They would go to parties, listen to music, and show off their cars late into the night. But Brenda and her friends belonged to the Mara Salvatrucha--the MS-13--the most violent gang in America, and in addition to enjoying the things that all teenagers do, her friends were thieves, drug dealers, human traffickers, and murderers. A street gang that began in Los Angeles in the 1980s, the Mara Salvatrucha has spread across the United States and Central America with startling speed, boasting tens of thousands of members. They deal ruthlessly with competing gangs and any members who display disloyalty, often leaving a trail of dismembered corpses in their wake. They are poised to surpass the Mafia as the country's most organized criminal network. And by operating within the insular Central American immigrant communities, the Mara Salvatrucha has been able to easily elude law enforcement. All that changed when Brenda Paz turned informant for the FBI, exposing the incredible scope of the gang's operations. But Brenda's cooperation with the FBI was only the beginning. What followed is an extraordinary story of strength, intelligence, and incredible courage. This Is for the Mara Salvatrucha takes us into a dark and violent world that few people have seen, but is closer than you think.

Book No Boundaries

  • Author : Tom Diaz
  • Publisher : University of Michigan Press
  • Release : 2011-01-25
  • ISBN : 0472034685
  • Pages : 359 pages

Download or read book No Boundaries written by Tom Diaz and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2011-01-25 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Tom Diaz has worn out some shoe leather, much like a good detective, in gathering facts, not myths or urban legends. As a result he has produced an accurate and comprehensive look at a grave and present danger to our society.” —From the Foreword by Chris Swecker, former Assistant Director of the FBI and former head of the FBI’s Criminal Investigation Division No Boundaries is a disturbing account of what many consider the “next Mafia”—Latino crime gangs. Like the Mafia, these gangs operate an international network, consider violence a routine matter, and defy U.S. law enforcement at every level. Also, the gangs spawn kingpins such as the notorious Nelson Varela Martinez Comandari, who nearly became the first “Latin godfather” in the United States. Focusing on the Los Angeles–based Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) and the 18th Street Gang, and the Chicago-based Latin Kings, Tom Diaz describes how neighborhood gangs evolved into extremely brutal, sophisticated criminal enterprises and how local and federal authorities have struggled to suppress them. As he makes clear, the problem of transnational Latino gangs involves complex national and international issues, such as racial tensions, immigration policy, conflict in Latin America, and world economic pressures.
