Excerpt: ... vii the rains of 1857 TnE wet season had thoroughly set in: the great river was rapid and swollen. And the difficulties General Havelock had to encounter were great; for the boats had to be collected, and boatmen to be procured. This class of men were shy of coming forward, in consequence of the complicity of some members of their craft in the treachery at Suttee Chowra Ghat. The little steamer, however, was of great service, and the crossing was effected in some four days, notwithstanding every obstacle. Colonel Fraser-Tytler was indefatigable. I remember seeing him, one evening, in a little native building by the river side, soaked and daubed in such a manner as rather to resemble a Nubian stoker in the Ked Sea than his own thoroughly military and distingud self. Of course the troops were moved gradually down towards the Ganges, from the north-western corner of the station, and were passed across the water in turn. It was before the Force had got fully across, I think, that one morning, when I had returned from riding, I found a middle-sized, strongly-built man, dressed in Khakee (ash-coloured) uniform and a helmet, who had come to look me up, and who asked if I was a civilian who had arrived with the Force. I replied that I was, and he then said: "I am Herbert Bruce, I hope we shall be friends, and work cordially together." He had rather a colourless face, light hair, and very pale blue eyes; but a determined mouth, and altogether an expression of much intelligence. I knew nothing about him, but he told me he belonged to the Bombay Army, and that he had come up to be with Neill, who was very anxious to establish a military police, which would not only act as ordinary city constables, but could be used, on an emergency, for any outpost...

This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: [Illustrated with over one hundred maps, photos and portraits, of the battles, individuals and places involved in the Indian Mutiny] Even a long experience of Indian and the customs of the Indians could have prepared John Sherer for the tumultuous events of the Indian Mutiny of 1857. A tax collector and magistrate, who first arrived in India in 1846, Sherer was posted to the North-West provinces when the Sepoy Revolt started. His experiences as narrated here form an interesting counter point to the military narratives that were written on the engagements of the mutiny. He and his fellow non-combatants and administrators were thrown to the wind as all the official British authorities attempted to put down the revolt. Widely lauded when the book was first published in 1910, it is a must for anyone interested in the Indian Mutiny. “Mr Sherer gives a graphic account of the events he witnessed in the terrible times of the Mutiny. He has done right to publish the letters sent to him by Sir James Outram and others; they speak for themselves.”—Glasgow Herald. “It throws an interesting sidelight on those troublous times from a civilian non-combatant’s point of view.”—Pall Mall Gazette. “Full of exciting adventure, with the added charm of actual personal experience. Written in a vigorous and picturesque style.”—Bookseller. “Mr Sherer’s narrative is full of good stories, and he has done well to republish it in its present form.”—Publishers’ Circular. “This publication will be interesting, instructive, and useful to the younger generation, as throwing a few sidelights on a momentous episode in our national history, and enabling them to estimate in some degree the anxiety, sorrow and horror which moved the nation in thrills and pulsations.”—Shooting Times.

This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: [Illustrated with over one hundred maps, photos and portraits, of the battles, individuals and places involved in the Indian Mutiny] ‘The mutiny as seen by a Lancer’s wife This account, which briefly covers life in India immediately preceding the Indian Mutiny, was originally titled A Lady’s Life Before and During the Indian Mutiny. The ‘red’ year of 1857 was an apocalyptic one for many of the British in India and Mrs. Ouvry’s account as she gives us the perspective of a wife of a senior regimental officer in a British Army cavalry regiment is, of course, harrowing. Henry Ouvry was an officer of the 3rd Light Dragoons before transferring to the 9th Lancers who saw much action and earned themselves a fearsome reputation during the Mutiny. Although Mrs. Ouvry was spared the experiences of the wives of officers of native regiments whose men rose up to slaughter them, this was still a time of anguish, terror and uncertainty for her, and this memoir brings her experiences vividly to life for anyone interested in the period.’-Print ed.

Book Reminiscences Of The Great Mutiny 1857 59 Illustrated Edition

Download or read book Reminiscences Of The Great Mutiny 1857 59 Illustrated Edition written by Sgt. William Forbes-Mitchell and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2016-07-26 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Illustrated with over one hundred maps, photos and portraits, of the battles, individuals and places involved in the Indian Mutiny. A fascinating view of the Indian Mutiny from a non-commissioned officer. “These Reminiscences are submitted to the public in the trust that they will be welcomed alike by soldier and civilian. They are recorded by one who was himself an actor in the scenes which he describes, and who viewed them from a novel and most unusual position for a military historian—the ranks. They have been carefully perused by an officer who was present at many of the operations mentioned; and considerable pains have been taken to verify, wherever possible, those incidents of which he was not personally cognisant. The interest of Mr. Forbes-Mitchell’s straightforward and soldierlike story is enhanced by the coincidence that he takes up the pen where Lady Inglis laid it down; and it is hoped that this volume may prove an acceptable continuation of her touching narrative of the Defence of Lucknow, and that, as a record of the Great Mutiny, it may furnish another thrilling chapter in that unparalleled story of suffering and of heroism,—of man’s bravery and of woman’s devotion.”—Introduction

Book excerpt: Newly illustrated throughout with contemporary maps, portraits, photographs and engravings, this is G.B. Malleson's concise and authoritative account of the Indian Mutiny of 1857. This detailed version of the events of 1857-58 is based on the evidence of the time, using the official documents, personal letters and private journals of those who experienced the insurgence first hand. Originally published in 1891, it describes the causes of the rebellion, its main protagonists, the sieges, battles and skirmishes and its aftermath from a Victorian perspective. From the massacre of Cawnpore, the siege of Delhi to the final relief of Lucknow, this book follows the soldiers of the British East India Company from the first sparks of unrest to the final bitter conclusion of the war.Today, many consider the Indian Mutiny and the ruthless treatment of the rebels and the complete humiliation of their leaders by the British, the beginning of the end for the British Raj. It took another 90 years before India won the independence it so desperately wanted.

Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1884 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XXXV. CONCLUSION. After leaving Muttra I had no further direct concern with the mutinies. I will, however, briefly relate the leading events that accompanied their suppression. Early in the year Lucknow was relieved, and the Gwalior contingent dispersed. The lower part of the Doab being now cleared of the rebels, Lord Canning left Calcutta and assumed charge of the Upper Provinces. He fixed his residence at Allahabad, to which station he transferred the seat of government. In the course of the year Lucknow was captured and Eohilcund reoccupied. So far as these provinces were concerned the mutiny was ended. It was not, however, till the lapse of another year that order was restored in Central India and other places. In November 1858, a general amnesty was proclaimed, and the Queen assumed the sovereignty of India. Her doing so gave great satisfaction to the natives, but for a reason which the English public would not have imagined, and of which I do not believe it is even now aware. The natives were under the belief that the East India Company farmed the country from the English Crown. They supposed, consequently, that the abolition of the Company would be followed by a remission of revenue to the extent of the profits which the Company had been in the habit of receiving. They also imagined that the direct government by the Queen would be accompanied by the establishment of a court, and a display of that splendour so congenial to their tastes. 'In the suppression of the mutinies, or rather in what followed their suppression, there were displayed many of the best English characteristics, but also some of our qualities less praiseworthy. There was no retaliation, no revenge; but, on the other hand, there was that rigid adherence to...

Book Mutiny Memoirs Being Personal Reminiscences Of The Great Sepoy Revolt Of 1857 Illustrated Edition

This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: [Illustrated with over one hundred maps, photos and portraits, of the battles, individuals and places involved in the Indian Mutiny] Colonel MacKenzie was only a young subaltern of three years’ service when the great Sepoy Mutiny broke out in 1857. His regiment, the 3rd Bengal Light Cavalry stationed in Meerut, was one of the worst effected and he and his fellow British officers had to fight for their lives as the native soldiers rioted. Having escaped narrowly from his erstwhile soldiers he rallied to the main garrison in Meerut, the rebels fled toward Delhi. He joined in the expedition to re-capture Delhi and relates his recollections with great spirit, there was no rest for the gallant young lieutenant as he joined in the effort to relieve Lucknow. During the last of the fighting his commanding officer, Captain Sanford, was killed and MacKenzie relates his hero’s death with great empathy. After the mutiny MacKenzie achieved the rank of lieutenant-colonel in 1878 and led his troops in the Second Afghan War, 1879-80. Promoted to full colonel four years later, he served as honorary ADC to Lansdowne, the Viceroy of India.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1891. The Sepoy Mutiny was a violent and very bloody uprising against British rule in India in 1857. It is also known by other names: the Indian Mutiny, the Indian Rebellion of 1857, or the Indian Revolt of 1857. In Britain and in the West, it was almost always portrayed as a series of unreasonable and bloodthirsty uprisings spurred by falsehoods about religious insensitivity. In India it has been viewed quite differently. And events of 1857 have been considered the first outbreak of an independence movement against British rule. -Robert McNamara, 19th Century History Expert The Indian Rebellion of 1857 was a rebellion in India against the rule of the British East India Company, that ran from May 1857 to July 1859. -Wikipedia OPINIONS OF THE PRESS. When the Indian Mutiny commenced, Colonel Mackenzie was a young subaltern officer stationed at Meerut, and this volume is a record of his personal experiences and adventures. The book is not only eminently readable, but as a plain account of the chief features of one of the most important episodes in our military history, it is distinctly valuable. -Review of Reviews, 15th December, 1891. The story of the Indian Mutiny has been told and re-told, but it has and always must have an exceeding interest for the Anglo-Indian, especially when its events are recounted by one who saw much that went on in those stirring times and is, in addition, as well known as Colonel Mackenzie is to so many of them. "Mutiny Memoirs" first saw the light in the columns of the Pioneer, and have now been published in book form. When the Mutiny broke out, Lieutenant Mackenzie was with his regiment, the 3rd Light Cavalry, at Meerut. His account of the outbreak is, therefore, that of one who was on the spot and saw all its horrors. Over thirty years have passed since then, but the memory of that fearful time is evidently too strongly engraved on his mind ever to be dimmed or obliterated. We are reminded, too, of all the horrors that our country-women suffered at that terrible period. - Civil & Military Gazette, 22nd December, 1891
