Oliver’s voice is funny and dead-on.”—The New York Times Book Review(Editors’ Choice) At once a self-styled social scientist, a spy in the baffling adult world, and a budding, hormone-driven emotional explorer, Oliver Tate is stealthily nosing his way forward through the murky and uniquely perilous waters of adolescence. Uncovering the secrets behind his parents’ teetering marriage, unraveling the mystery that is his alluring and equally quirky classmate Jordana Bevan, and understanding where he fits in among the mystifying beings in his orbit. Struggling to buoy his parents’ wedded bliss, deep-six his own virginity, and sound the depths of heartache, happiness, and the business of being human, what’s a lad to do? Book U S Submarines Through 1945 An Illustrated Design History

Download or read book U S Submarines Through 1945 An Illustrated Design History written by Norman Friedman and published by US Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2021-08-15 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Norman Friedman Illustrated Design History series of U.S. warships books has been an industry standard for three decades and has sold thousands of copies worldwide. To mark and celebrate this achievement, the Naval Institute Press is proud to make these books available once more. Digitally remastered for enhanced photo resolution and quality, corrected, and updated, this series will continue to serve--for scholars and enthusiasts alike--as the foundation for U.S. naval warship research and reference for years to come. U.S. Submarines Through 1945 is one the most comprehensive references available on the entire development of U.S. Submarines from the first commissioned undersea fighting vessel, Alligator, in 1862, to the S boats of World War I, and the feared fleet submarines of the Gato and Balao classes of World War II. Like the other books in Norman Friedman's design-history series, U.S. Submarines Through 1945 is based largely on formerly classified internal U.S. Navy records. Friedman, a leading authority on U.S. warships, explains the political and technical rationales of warship construction and recounts the evolution of each design. This volume is fully illustrated with deck plans, outboard profiles, sketches from major design studies, and numerous detailed photographs complement the text.

Book Explaining Traditions

Download or read book Explaining Traditions written by Simon Bronner and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2011-08-26 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do humans hold onto traditions? Many pundits predicted that modernization and the rise of a mass culture would displace traditions, especially in America, but cultural practices still bear out the importance of rituals and customs in the development of identity, heritage, and community. In Explaining Traditions: Folk Behavior in Modern Culture, Simon J. Bronner discusses the underlying reasons for the continuing significance of traditions, delving into their social and psychological roles in everyday life, from old-time crafts to folk creativity on the Internet. Challenging prevailing notions of tradition as a relic of the past, Explaining Traditions provides deep insight into the nuances and purposes of living traditions in relation to modernity. Bronner’s work forces readers to examine their own traditions and imparts a better understanding of raging controversies over the sustainability of traditions in the modern world.

He went straight up the stairs to one of the guest rooms, the one that contained all the toys. He had had it designed and renovated by a famous underground designer of BDSM torture chambers. When Scott approached the designer and told him what he wanted, the man jumped at the chance. He had never done a room for a little while and when given a budget three times the amount of any dungeon he had built, he had gone to town. The room was huge. There were all the female toys known to man, there were retro dolls, soft toys. a white four poster bed fit for any little princess. There were story books and coloring books, two whole shelves, colored pencils, crayons and paints. Each bedding and drapery piece had ruffles and lace. A rocking horse, a swing, hoops and skipping ropes. He swept the room with a quick glance and closed the door. The room was a bit messy proof that someone had played in there, but not a complete bomb site, certainly not messy enough to warrant disciplinary action. Back at the foot of the stairs he wondered to himself how he had done 'and heard the noise from the movie theater before. He went in that direction and as he turned the corner he could see the back of her head, eclipsed by the cinema style seat, the movie was projected on the wall beyond her, an old classic cartoon fairy tale. He coughed loud enough to be heard over the music. She bounced off the chair and turned around, almost unable to contain herself, she screamed and ran towards him, arms in the air, her blonde pigtails waving. ”Daddy!” She cried. She was about to throw herself into his arms but he straightened up, straightened his back and crossed his hands on his chest. She stopped dead, for a moment she was confused but her misdeed returned to him and she lowered her head. head, though she hoped it wasn't that. She had hidden the packaging in the large bin outside. He leaned around her, over the chair and muted the sound in the cinema, then stood up to- above her. ”Tell me what's the rule about eating chocolate between meals?” He said his voice was as harsh as his back was straight. “No chocolate or candy between meals. "She told him back, her hands twisting and waving in front of her. "So, do you have something to tell me? " He said. “Nooo…” She said in a low voice, tilting her head forward a little. “Are you sure? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many leadership books written from the viewpoint of Navy Admirals, Marine and Army Generals, and Commanding Officers of all varieties. I have read many of them and love a few. This book is not written from that viewpoint. My leadership was forged through the eyes of a career enlisted. Approached and encouraged, starting my second year of Naval service on submarines, to “do better and become an officer.” I chose time and time again to remain an enlisted service member. My view out the periscope is that of a leader who realized the unparalleled leadership impact of a strong senior enlisted, what many in the private sector would refer to as a mid-level to director level manager. Every organization is a pyramid, a few people at the top, the majority at or near the entry, to lower-level positions. The unique application of leadership through the laser lens of a Command Master Chief is this; only a Command Master Chief has complete relatability to the most junior person in the organization and can also get a short notice face to face with the Admiral. When I was in the submarine force, very early on, I knew I was not motivated by power. I also knew I was big thinking with big thinking strategies. I needed to build skills in areas of talent, and I needed to have the authority to carry those ideas out. I have built my consulting company around this view and the belief in the influence and critical importance of these leaders. I now consult and coach executives from Fortune ’50s and lead discussions with entry-level team leaders. The tools and perspective from my periscope, are completely unique, based on this experience, as well as my time with Gallup as a consultant. I respected Gallup over the years as a Sailor from the outside, never imagining I would be on the inside as a consultant, becoming their top, client rated consultant in the world. The combination of this strength-based view, the System learned on submarines, the methodology, and process (patent pending) will become staples in the seabags of executives and first-time supervisors alike. Why? Well, I don’t just remember what it is like to clean a toilet, I still do on occasion.

Book Daddy s Gone to War

Download or read book Daddy s Gone to War written by William M. Tuttle Jr. and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1993-09-16 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Looking out a second-story window of her family's quarters at the Pearl Harbor naval base on December 7, 1941, eleven-year-old Jackie Smith could see not only the Rising Sun insignias on the wings of attacking Japanese bombers, but the faces of the pilots inside. Most American children on the home front during the Second World War saw the enemy only in newsreels and the pages of Life Magazine, but from Pearl Harbor on, "the war"--with its blackouts, air raids, and government rationing--became a dramatic presence in all of their lives. Thirty million Americans relocated, 3,700,000 homemakers entered the labor force, sparking a national debate over working mothers and latchkey children, and millions of enlisted fathers and older brothers suddenly disappeared overseas or to far-off army bases. By the end of the war, 180,000 American children had lost their fathers. In "Daddy's Gone to War", William M. Tuttle, Jr., offers a fascinating and often poignant exploration of wartime America, and one of generation's odyssey from childhood to middle age. The voices of the home front children are vividly present in excerpts from the 2,500 letters Tuttle solicited from men and women across the country who are now in their fifties and sixties. From scrap-collection drives and Saturday matinees to the atomic bomb and V-J Day, here is the Second World War through the eyes of America's children. Women relive the frustration of always having to play nurses in neighborhood war games, and men remember being both afraid and eager to grow up and go to war themselves. (Not all were willing to wait. Tuttle tells of one twelve year old boy who strode into an Arizona recruiting office and declared, "I don't need my mother's consent...I'm a midget.") Former home front children recall as though it were yesterday the pain of saying good-bye, perhaps forever, to an enlisting father posted overseas and the sometimes equally unsettling experience of a long-absent father's return. A pioneering effort to reinvent the way we look at history and childhood, "Daddy's Gone to War" views the experiences of ordinary children through the lens of developmental psychology. Tuttle argues that the Second World War left an indelible imprint on the dreams and nightmares of an American generation, not only in childhood, but in adulthood as well. Drawing on his wide-ranging research, he makes the case that America's wartime belief in democracy and its rightful leadership of the Free World, as well as its assumptions about marriage and the family and the need to get ahead, remained largely unchallenged until the tumultuous years of the Kennedy assassination, Vietnam and Watergate. As the hopes and expectations of the home front children changed, so did their country's. In telling the story of a generation, Tuttle provides a vital missing piece of American cultural history.
