Book excerpt: The re-release of Debbie Drechsler's first collection of short comic stories, Daddy's Girl. Her account of her father's abuse, told from the point of view of an adolescent, is one of the most honest, empathetic and profoundly disturbing uses of the comic medium in its history. With the recent critical and commercial success of mature and uncompromising works by women cartoonists such as Fun Home, We Are On Our Own and Persepolis, Daddy's Girl should find a responsive readership.

Download or read book Daddy s Girls written by Suzanne Gold and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2000-11-17 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Daddys Girls is a rich yet simple family tale of love, madness and spirit told in the three first-person points of view of its three women. Overlapping vignettes create a vivid patchwork of lifes defining moments to reveal dark forces lurking beneath the familys typical middle-class veneer as they struggle to love one another. The story is fiction with a dash of magical realism, but the inspiration is autobiographical. Daddys Girls recently received a glowing review from Terry Mathews of Bookbrowser.com. She calls it A book that will speak to you on many levels...that can alter your perception of the world, broaden your horizons and urge you to think outside the box. The best book Ive read since Cunninghams THE HOURS. And Ruth Williams, author of Younger Than That Now says Daddys Girls is a luxuriant narrative, telling the stories of three complex women two sisters and their mother and how their lives are impacted by the mental illness of one. A fascinating and obviously well-informed look at heartbreaking realities. This is a book written from the heart.

Book excerpt: "I THINK ONE OF DADDY'S LITTLE GIRLS KILLED HIM." For the four glamorous daughters of Lord Oswald Balcon, money can buy anything. From Fendi handbags to Ivy League educations, they live in a world of designer labels and unrestricted opulence -- their father's money and aristocratic status, coupled with their dazzling good looks, bought them every opportunity and advantage. They are beautiful, blond, and barely thirty, and the world is their luxury playground. Venetia, the sophisticated interior designer, has booming professional success but is desperate for a child and an escape from a loveless marriage. Camilla, the rising political star, is too brilliant and ambitious for any of her unworthy lovers to handle. Sweet yet savvy Cate is living out her ultimate dream, launching her own magazine, with an all-too-handsome business partner. The baby of the family, Serena, is one of the country's most beautiful actresses, on the cusp of international stardom, but her party-girl lifestyle is bringing about more scandal than success. The girls are the darlings of the London paparazzi, but when Lord Balcon turns up dead, the shadow of suspicion falls on his four daughters. A jealous tyrant, Daddy has tried to bring his daughters down all their lives. These four women -- at the top of their careers in show business, publishing, interior design, and politics -- must face an awful accusation, and each other, as they try to discover the truth that lies beneath the glossy surface of their lives. The facade of the Balcon family hides a web of deceit and betrayal, in which a thirty-year-old secret lurks, threatening to destroy them all. From the sun-drenched beaches of the Caribbean to Manhattan's elite society circuit, from the exclusive fashion houses of Milan to the star-studded streets of Cannes, the Balcon sisters play out their lives in a whirl of glitz and the ultra chic. But as tragedy and danger stalk every one of them, the scene is set for a stunning climax.

Book The Godfather s Daughter

Download or read book The Godfather s Daughter written by Rita Gigante and published by Hay House, Inc. This book was released on 2012-09-18 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rita Gigante grew up in a world swirling with secrets, lies, and multiple sins. Her father, notorious Mafia boss Vincent "the Chin" Gigante, was the leader of the Genovese crime clan and the head of all five New York crime families for decades. But until she was 16, she was kept in the dark about his underworld activities. She unknowingly hung out at mob headquarters and witnessed her dad’s whispered meetings around the dinner table, but only knew what she was told by her mother and siblings about his odd behavior: Dad’s sick. Keep your mouth shut. Don’t talk about the family. Living with the family secret—and other shocking betrayals she was to uncover, then instructed to conceal—plunged Rita into emotional and physical turmoil for years. And then there was the blockbuster secret she herself kept hidden away: As the youngest girl in an old-fashioned, devout Catholic family, how could she confess to the unforgiving Godfather that she was a lesbian? They were all going to hell, she figured . . . unless she could find a way to embrace the truth and find redemption. In The Godfather’s Daughter, Rita details her spiritual journey as she unravels the mysteries of her family and herself, and learns what it means to live in the truth she finds. It’s a real-life father-daughter tale of betrayal and faith, violence and love—and how a young woman escaped from a spiraling darkness to reach the light. And in the end, with his daughter’s healing help, even the Godfather finally learns to live in the light and atone for his sins.

Praise for The Unbreakable Series: “Romana’s characters are portrayed with skill, each is a credible person filled with foibles, warts and gaffes…the various twists and turns are handled with skill, are easily followed, and add depth and dimension often lacking in works provided by newer writers…Maria Romana’s Little Miss Straight Lace is a fast paced, keep ‘em guessing and turning the page type read sure to intrigue readers who enjoy good writing, a bit of romance, a lot of action, and a downright good read.” —Molly Martin, for Midwest Book Review “There is one thing for sure, the reader is in for a rollicking ride. It is full of suspense and mystery along with romance and humor. A very enjoyable read.” —Readers Favorite, an Amazon VineTM Voice reviewer. “…a great beach read…all the ingredients for a story that’s hard to put down…” —Author A.J. Braithwaite, Inside Hawley Lodge Read a snippet (from Book 3): Robert spoke with open hands and a casual stance, “Look, fella, take it easy. We just—” “O-okay, listen, I-I’ll tell you the whole story. Everything. But I swear, I never did anything to her. Nobody did. Not on my watch, anyway. I took real good care of her. I swear. You gotta believe me!” Nic’s pulse quickened. He took a step closer and cocked a brow at the stocky man, “Who her?” “Y-you know—your girl.” “My girl?” “Y-yeah. You know…petite, brunette, pretty. Kinda…” The guy relaxed a little, pulling his hands away from the fence, and started forming an hourglass shape with them. Nic pursed his lips. “Okay. I know what she looks like.” He lifted his chin at the stocky man, “So what are you talking about? ‘Your watch’. ‘Took care of her’. Where? When?” “Come on, you know…” The tattooed man looked from Nic over to Robert, as if he expected a more reasonable interrogator—a Good Cop to Nic’s Bad. But Nic insisted, “Humor me.” “Well, uh, well…” Nic took another step. The tattooed man gulped and started talking, “Yeah, okay. See, when I took the job, I didn’t know it was her, okay? It was only when I saw her close up, in the light, that I recognized her. I remembered her from the bar. From that night last summer when I pulled her off the stool. I mean, I didn’t know who she really was. I just thought she was your date, your girl or whatever, okay? I didn’t know she was like…one of you.” Keywords: Romance, Romantic Suspense, Romance Suspense, Suspense Romance, Mystery Romance, Romantic Mystery, Romance Adventure, Romantic Adventure, Multicultural Romance, Hispanic Romance, Romance Novel, Books for Android, eBooks for Android

Download or read book Daddy s Girl written by Charlotte Vale-Allen and published by Island Nation Press LLC. This book was released on 2002 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On Writing Daddy's GirlAfter I had been through many versions of the manuscript (written over almost a decade) I decided that for this book to have validity it would be necessary not only to show the past but also to give a picture of the present-illustrating how the events of my childhood affected me at the time, as well as later in life as an adult and a parent.Given that I wrote the book in the first place as a document that I hoped would be useful to others who'd suffered abuse and also to professionals, I felt it was very important to present detailed portraits of the child I was and the woman I grew to be (in large measure as a result of trying to cope with the long-term effects of the abuse.) As well, I thought it was vital to illustrate how fallout from the abuse can be felt down through the generations, if one fails to exercise awareness and caution. So the book weaves back and forth between past and present (the present being 1979, when the final version was completed). I also had to decide at the very start whether I was going to dole out snippets of truth or be completely truthful and address the issue as fully as I was able. There seemed no point to writing an autobiographical account of incest if I was going to be anything less than completely truthful. It was not difficult to tell the truth, nor was the writing of the book a cathartic experience, as many have imagined it to be. The fact is that I had long-since confronted my personal demons and had managed to relegate the past to the past-something exceedingly difficult for many victims of any/all forms of abuse to do.A few years ago in correcting the page proofs of a new British edition of the book, I reread DADDY'S GIRL, and was gratified by what I'd written. (Often, with my novels, I am not at all happy when I reread them.) I think that as an author I have little, if any, objectivity about my work once it's completed and so am not necessarily a good judge of it. But I am proud of DADDY'S GIRL. Since its publication in 1980 it has been of help to a lot of people. And, ultimately, it's my way of returning some measure of the kindness and attention people showed me when I was working my way along the rough roadway toward my future.

Book The Janitor

Download or read book The Janitor written by Todd Hopkins and published by Thomas Nelson. This book was released on 2009-08-31 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you ever find yourself losing sight of the important things in life-work and stress can become overwhelming at times. Such is the situation where CEO Roger Kimbrough finds himself in this business parable. The Janitor was inspired by Todd Hopkins's personal experiences of interviewing overqualified retired businessmen for evening shift janitorial positions. Todd's applicants consistently would say they simply needed something to do. In this fable, janitor Bob Tidwell helps Roger to reevaluate how he is leading his business and his life. Bob's counsel is based upon six principles that Todd and coauthor Ray Hilbert discovered have the most impact on succeeding in business while holding together a personal life. Their insightful advice is delivered in a real-to-life story that inspires you to find greater fulfillment in your life. Like so many CEOs in the corner office, still working when the janitor arrives to do the nightly cleaning, Roger is having a difficult and stressful evening when he spills his guts to the older janitor. As their relationship develops, Bob, a retired businessman, promises help that will turn Roger's business and personal life around. The story follows not only their weekly meetings at the office but also the application of each principle: Recharge vs. Discharge View Family as a Blessing, Not a Responsibility Pray, Don't Pout Pass It Around Don't Spend, Invest! Leave a Legacy The Janitor's message will capture your mind and heart; stimulate meaningful, lasting life-changes; and show you how to influence your family, neighbors, and coworkers while experiencing business and life to the fullest. "Take a few minutes and devour this little book by Todd Hopkins and Ray Hilbert. It's going to be a motivational classic, and you'll be in on the first wave of inspired readers." - Pat Williams, Senior Vice President, Orlando Magic; and Author, The Warrior Within

Book excerpt: In the year 2047, Mitchell Hughes, a visually impaired divorced schoolteacher with two young children, is on trial for murder. The only eyewitness to the murder is a poly-gig micro-tronic computer chip implanted deep within the brain of every United States citizen. This computerized chip implant is known as the DuoDrite. The DuoDrite chip implant is engineered as the first transmitter and receiver for communications and entertainment, replacing personal computers, global positioning systems, cellular telephones, and home entertainment devices. The DuoDrite technology is the sole interface to the Internet and is simply accessed by thought and visualization in the mind's eye. Since the DuoDrite chip implant's first conception in 2015, government agencies, such as the Department of Homeland Security, discovered its uses as a measure to protect national security. The Memory Data File, or MDF, is the primary tool used by law enforcement. Once a crime is committed, the DuoDrite chip immediately transfers the MDF of the crime to the appropriate law enforcement agency. Mitchell Hughes is accused by his very own MDF of a capital crime. It is up to Mitchell's defense attorney, Claire Evans, a woman secretly in love with her client, to save him from the clutches of a diabolical conspiracy. Mitchell Hughes discovers that he is cursed with a defect in his DuoDrite chip implant. Will Mitchell be able to overcome the defect and use the technology that he has denounced for his own preservation?
