Download or read book Birchwood written by Roger E. Taylor and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2008-08-30 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A mysterious giant of a man with no memory or past appears in the small town of Birchwood, Maine. He immediately meets thirteen-year-old Mary Whitney who hasn't spoken a word in more than a year. Who is this visitor? Why are some people frightened of him? What key does he hold to the mysteries enveloping this community? Vain, shallow characters dominate the town's social structure. Mary's mother has spent a lifetime in the grip of alcoholism. Mary's father is seldom at home. Albert Hicks, an overweight deputy, suffers from feelings of inadequacy. Robin Cohen, Mary's new schoolteacher, harbors feelings of separation and isolation. The town's sheriff, Louis Cranston, struggles with his own inner demons of guilt and loss that reach back to his early childhood. These are only collateral symptoms of the darkest secret of all that's locked behind the silence of a young girl. The key to the mystery may rest with the body of a murdered man found on the shores of the black lake from which the stranger appeared. The fate of a girl, a town, the world, and perhaps heaven itself are entwined within the dark secret that lies at the heart of Birchwood.
Download or read book Communicative Functions and Linguistic Forms in Speech Interaction Volume 156 written by Klaus J. Kohler and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prosody is generally studied at a separate linguistic level from syntax and semantics. It analyses phonetic properties of utterances such as pitch and prominence, and orders them into phonological categories such as pitch accent, boundary tone, and metrical grid. The goal is to define distinctive formal differentiators of meanings in utterances. But what these meanings are is either excluded or a secondary concern. This book takes the opposite approach, asking what are the basic categories of meaning that speakers want to transmit to listeners? And what formal means do they use to achieve it? It places linguistic form in functions of speech communication, and takes into account all the formal exponents - sounds, words, syntax, prosodies - for specific functional coding. Basic communicative functions such as 'questioning' may be universally assumed, but their coding by linguistic bundles varies between languages. A comparison of function-form systems in English, German and Mandarin Chinese shows this formal diversity for universal functions.

Book excerpt: Introduction: My name is Thomas Edward Daniels. My associates call me Professor Daniels, and my friends simply call me Tom. I am a fictional character created by the author. I teach history at an upscale university somewhere in North Carolina. I am married to the most beautiful woman on planet earth. Her name is Sara Daniels. We have been married for over twenty-years, although to me, it feels more like a century! And I’m sure she agrees with me. We live in a beautiful two-story Victorian-style house built in 1922 with our beautiful, blessed daughter, Sofia. Our blessing is now nine years old and a handful. Our little Sofi, as we call her, is a passionate fan of ice-cream. If ice-cream was a meal, it would be her choice for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. My life was picture perfect—a beautiful family, a beautiful home filled with loveand joy. The only thing missing was just a dog or cat. But one day, my entire world came crashing down. My life changed drastically when my beautiful wife was diagnosed with a terminalillness. I lost my job of twenty years and started drinking from sunrise to sundown to cope with all the pain and sorrow of this new reality. I was scared, broken, and lost. Having these feelings that I had never had to experience before truly broke my soul. Did I mention I have a gift? I can see the dead and they can see and communicate their thoughts and feelings to me. You see, when I was seven years old, I discovered this unique and special gift for the very first time. The dead like to communicate and share with me how they died and, in most cases, who killed them or who or what took them away. It is a curse to be able to have this gift as evil itself is present in many forms with maleficent intentions every single time. I have worked as a paranormal investigator in the past to help families discover the truth about the passing of their loved ones. I am about to share with you the last chapter of my journey in life—or is it? This is how it all started, or perhaps, how it ended? The Unknown Supernatural/Mystery/Suspense
