Book D Shamhradh ann an Raineach

Download or read book D Shamhradh ann an Raineach written by Graham Cooper and published by Luath Press Ltd. This book was released on 2020-05-15 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dà Shamhradh ann an Raineach is a historical novel written in Scottish Gaelic. It is set in 18th century Edinburgh and rural Perthshire, 20 years after the Battle of Culloden, a time of rapid social change and development in areas such as medicine, printing, the Church, the Gaelic language and agriculture. The novel is based on the facts that are known of the life of Dugald Buchanan, the poet and schoolteacher who made a major contribution to the first translation of the New Testament into Gaelic from the original Greek. He oversaw the printing of the New Testament in Edinburgh in 1767, the same year in which his own book of Spiritual Songs was published. These poems were to become enormously influential throughout the Gaelic speaking world. The greater part of the novel describes the last two years of his life and is narrated by his wife, Margaret. She outlived him by over 40 years and was in a position to look back over the tragic events which had struck the Buchanan family. As a result, the story ultimately becomes her own as much as that of Dugald.

Book Am Balach Beag a Dh isteadh aig Dorsan

Download or read book Am Balach Beag a Dh isteadh aig Dorsan written by Alison Lang and published by Luath Press Ltd. This book was released on 2020-04-24 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tha an t-eilean làn de sgeulachdan agus tha Tormod gan cluinntinn a h-uile taobh dhan tèid e. Cha ghann nach cluinn e mu na saighdearan Ròmanach, còtaichean seunta, agus mu dhaoine air an toirt a thaobh, air neo am bruid, air sgàth an cuid aineòlas, agus droch rùn chàich. Ach, chan e a h-uile càil a tha freagarrach do chluasan òganaich agus cluinnidh Tormod, 's a chluais ri claisneachd, gu leòr a tha ga chur a rannsachadh mu cò a b' athair dha, am measg nithean eile. Cluinnidh e sop às gach seid bho a nàbaidh Ruairidh, a mhàthair is cailleachan na bùtha, ach chan eil e idir furasta do Thormod bun no bàrr a dhèanamh dheth. Nach fheàrr neoichiontachd na h-òige na bhith air do bhuaireadh cus le còmhradh a tha am beul dhaoine? The island is full of stories, and Tormod hears them everywhere—at home, at school, and from Ruairidh next door. There are stories about Roman legions and enchanted tweed coats and men carried off by brutal pressgangs and self-proclaimed bards who would steal a song right out of your mouth. And then there are the stories he isn't supposed to hear, and maybe one of them will explain a few things that puzzle him, like why he doesn't have a father. Stories can change with every telling, and a little boy's innocence can't last forever. Am Balach Beag a dh'Èisteadh aig Dorsan agus na chuala e (The Little Boy who Listened at Doors ) explores the power of stories and the motives of people who tell them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A face is nothing without its history. Gavin and Emma live in Manhattan. She's a musician. He works in Artificial Intelligence. He's good at his job. Scarily good. He's researching human features to make more realistic mask-bots - non-human 'carers' for elderly people. When his enquiry turns personal he's forced to ask whether his own life is an artificial mask. Delving into family stories and his roots in the Highlands of Scotland, he embarks on a quest to discover his own true face, 'uniquely sprung from all the faces that had been'. He returns to England to look after his Grampa. Travels. Reads old documents. Visits ruins. Borrows, plagiarises and invents. But when Emma tells him his proper work is to make a story out of glass and steel, not memory and straw, which path will he choose? What's the best story he can give her? A novel about the struggle for freedom and personal identity; what it means to be human. It fuses the glass and steel of our increasingly controlled algorithmic world with the memory and straw of our forebears' world controlled by traditions and taboos, the seasons and the elements.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A precious golden souvinier has disappered from Kismuil Castle in the Island of Barra. The historic brooch was given as a gift by the Chief of Clanranald to MacNeil of Barra in the 16th century. Or perhaps it was treasure found from a shipwrecked galleon from the Spanish Armada... The local constable, P.C. Murdo set outs to find who dunnit. He has seven suspects, but in his search for the truth of the theft discovers that suspicion and prejudice make poor detectives. Help comes from smart officers from the mainland, whose most difficult challenge is Murdo himself. In this short, humorous novel mystery and psychology are lightly mixed, revealing that folk's actions and characters are as contradictory as they are complex. PC Murdo would find himself at home in both Whisky Galore and in Para Handy. The novel is a compassionate examination of how attitudes predicate actions which make or break communities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition in The New History of Scotland series, replacing Alfred Smyth's Warlords and Holy Men (1984), covers the history of Scotland in the period up to 900 AD. A great deal has changed in the historiography of this period in the intervening three decades: an entire Pictish kingdom has moved nearly a hundred miles to the north; new archaeological finds have forced us to rethink old assumptions; and the writing of early medieval history is beginning to struggle out of the shadow of later medieval sources which have too often been read rather naively and without sufficient regard for their implicit ideological agenda.Gilbert Markus brings a stimulating approach to studying this elusive period, analysing both its litter of physical evidence as well as its literary sources - what he calls 'luminous debris' - as a method of shedding light on the reality of the period. In doing so, he reforms our historical perceptions of what has often been dismissed as a 'dark age'.

Book Gaelic in Scotland 1698 1981

Download or read book Gaelic in Scotland 1698 1981 written by Charles W. J. Withers and published by Birlinn Ltd. This book was released on 2021-12-01 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surprisingly little is known of the geographical history of Gaelic: where and when it was spoken in the past, and how and why the Gaelic-speaking area of Scotland – the Gaidhealtachd – has retreated and the language declined. A hundred years ago there were 250,000 Gaelic speakers. Now there are 80,000. This book answers four broad questions: What has been the geography of Gaelic in the past? How has that geography changed over time and space? What have been the patterns of language use within the Gaedhealtachd in the past? And what have been the processes of language change? Emphasis is upon the changing geography of the spoken language from 1698 to 1981: from the earliest date for which it is possible to document the expanse of the Gaelic language area to the most recent census to record the numbers speaking Gaelic.
