Book Substance Abuse and Emotion

Download or read book Substance Abuse and Emotion written by Jon D. Kassel and published by Amer Psychological Assn. This book was released on 2010 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The devastating psychological, physical, and spiritual damage wrought by the misuse of drugs is indisputable. However, there is a recurring debate over the causes of substance abuse that typically divides along two common assumptions: People either abuse drugs and alcohol out of sheer pleasure-seeking drives run amok or to escape or assuage aversive states of comorbid anxiety or depression. Substance Abuse and Emotion goes beyond this dichotomy in its exploration of recent, significant field observations, theory construction and rigorous testing, and laboratory research to advance working models for a new research paradigm on substance abuse and comorbidity. Notably, the relationship between drugs and emotion is emerging as paramount in understanding drug abuse etiology, maintenance, and relapse. Part I of this edited volume examines various theoretical perspectives on the interrelationship between substance abuse and emotion, such as craving and positive/negative reinforcement; cognitive theories; relapse; and developmental, sociobiological, and evolutionary perspectives. Part II explores new assessment methodologies, such as ecological momentary assessment and the linkage between affect and cognitive deficits among drug users. The book concludes with a research agenda to expand the volumes new paradigm in understanding and treating substance abuse.

Book Immigration Regulation in Federal States

Download or read book Immigration Regulation in Federal States written by Sasha Baglay and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-03-18 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book examines the phenomenon of immigration federalism: its main characteristics, why and how it has developed, its implications for immigration systems (in general) and non-citizens’ rights (in particular). The book introduces the reader to theoretical perspectives on immigration federalism through three sets of literature – federalism, governance and non-citizens’ rights – that provide a necessary framework for understanding immigration federalism’s multiple facets and impacts. It also offers an analysis of immigration federalism through case studies of six jurisdictions: Australia, Canada, Germany, Switzerland, the EU and the US. Despite increased sub-national activity in immigration regulation in several federal states, very little research has been dedicated so far to comparing how federal states deal with immigration federalism. Comparative studies on the human rights implications of immigration federalism have received even less attention. This book seeks to fill the gap in this area and is an important contribution to the field, providing the reader with a better understanding of the complex issues surrounding immigration federalism and its impact on non-citizens.

Download or read book Metamorphoses written by Emanuele Coccia and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2021-06-09 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are all fascinated by the mystery of metamorphosis – of the caterpillar that transforms itself into a butterfly. Their bodies have almost nothing in common. They don’t share the same world: one crawls on the ground and the other flutters its wings in the air. And yet they are one and the same life. Emanuele Coccia argues that metamorphosis – the phenomenon that allows the same life to subsist in disparate bodies – is the relationship that binds all species together and unites the living with the non-living. Bacteria, viruses, fungi, plants, animals: they are all one and the same life. Each species, including the human species, is the metamorphosis of all those that preceded it – the same life, cobbling together a new body and a new form in order to exist differently. And there is no opposition between the living and the non-living: life is always the reincarnation of the non-living, a carnival of the telluric substance of a planet – the Earth – that continually draws new faces and new ways of being out of even the smallest particle of its disparate body. By highlighting what joins humans together with other forms of life, Coccia’s brilliant reflection on metamorphosis encourages us to abandon our view of the human species as static and independent and to recognize instead that we are part of a much larger and interconnected form of life.

Book The Court of Arbitration for Sport

Download or read book The Court of Arbitration for Sport written by I. S. Blackshaw and published by T.M.C. Asser Press. This book was released on 2006-03-02 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I am very pleased and proud to write the Foreword to this Book on the occasion of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) having completed its first twenty years of operations. And I warmly congratulate the ASSER International Sports Law Centre and the Editors, Ian Blackshaw, Rob Siekmann and Janwillem Soek – in cooperation with Andrew Gibson, Griffith University, Brisbane, Australia, and Steve Cornelius, University of Johannesburg, South Africa –, on their joint initiative in putting together and publishing this Book. The CAS has come a long way since the idea of establishing it was first mentioned by Juan Antonio Samaranch, the former IOC President. His vision and confidence in its future have been truly vindicated. Since its creation and up to 31 December 2003, 576 cases have been submitted, of which 550 were requests for arbitration and 26 for an advisory opinion. In 2004, there was a sharp rise in the number of cases handled by the CAS and this trend continues apace. Thus, the CAS goes from strength to strength and has a great future, having, in the words of the Swiss Federal Tribunal in its landmark judgement of 27 May 2003, “built up the trust of the sporting world [and] . . . now widely recognised . . . [as] . . . one of the principal mainstays of organised sport.
