Book The Middle English Weye of Paradys and the Middle French Voie de Paradis

Download or read book The Middle English Weye of Paradys and the Middle French Voie de Paradis written by Diekstra and published by BRILL. This book was released on 1991-04 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The late Middle English Weye of Paradys and its French source La Voie de Paradis use the theme of the allegorical journey to Paradise. Essentially they are popular guides to confession, adaptations for the layman of more specialized works in Latin such as Raymond of Pennaforte's Summa de Poenitentia. This edition presents critical texts of both The Weye of Paradys and La Voie de Paradis and analyzes the relations of the English text with its immediate (French) and distant (Latin) sources. This work makes the English and French texts available in print for the first time and places them in the wider field of popular penitential literature.

  • Publisher : Princeton University Press

Download or read book The Ages of Man written by Elizabeth Sears and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2019-02-19 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elizabeth Sears here combines rich visual material and textual evidence to reveal the sophistication, warmth, and humor of medieval speculations about the ages of man. Medieval artists illustrated this theme, establishing the convention that each of life's phases in turn was to be represented by the figure of a man (or, rarely, a woman) who revealed his age through size, posture, gesture, and attribute. But in selectiing the number of ages to be depicted--three, four, five, six, seven, ten, or twelve--and in determining the contexts in which the cycles should appear, painters and sculptors were heirs to longstanding intellectual tradtions. Ideas promulgated by ancient and medieval natural historians, physicians, and astrologers, and by biblical exegetes and popular moralists, receive detailed treatment in this wide-ranging study. Professor Sears traces the diffusion of well-established schemes of age division from the seclusion of the early medieval schools into wider circles in the later Middle Ages and examines the increasing use of the theme as a structure of edifying discourse, both in art and literature. Elizabeth Sears is Assistant Professor of Art History at Princeton University. Originally published in 1986. Book Francs et Orientaux dans le monde des croisades

Download or read book Francs et Orientaux dans le monde des croisades written by Jean Richard and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-28 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This latest volume by Jean Richard is concerned with the evolution of the crusading movement and with the interaction between crusaders and indigenous peoples of the Near East. The articles look at changes in the concept of crusading, means of financing it, and forms of indulgence; at how the adoption of maritime transport created a need to control the sea, and how contacts with the Muslims could lead to peaceful means of resolving conflict and dealing with prisoners. In their lands in the east, the Latins accommodated the feudal structures they brought with them to local conditions, especially in the mountains. Both in this and in the religious sphere compromises were made, and in this co-existence each community preserved its individuality. The final section then considers roles played by eastern Christians in the contacts between Europeans and Mongols.

Book History as a Profession

  • Author : Pim den Boer
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press

Download or read book History as a Profession written by Pim den Boer and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a vivid portrait of the French historical profession in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, concluding just before the emergence of the famous Annales school of historians. It places the profession in its social, academic, and political context and shows that historians of the period have been unfairly maligned as amateurish and primitive in comparison to their more celebrated successors. Pim den Boer begins by sketching the contours of French historiography in the nineteenth century, examining the quantity of historical writing, its subject matter, and who wrote it. He traces the growing influence of professional historians. He shows the increasing involvement of the national government in historical studies, paying special attention to the impact of political factions, ranging from ultraroyalists to radical republicans. He explores how historical research and teaching changed at schools and universities. And he shows how nineteenth-century historians' keen understanding of the past and of historical methodology laid the foundations for historiography in the twentieth century. archives, including official documents, confidential reports, and personal letters. Den Boer makes use of statistical, biographical, and methodological analysis and demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of both minor historians and leading scholars, including Charles Seignobos and Charles-Victor Langlois.
