The three day Conference on POLYPLOIDY: BIOLOGICAL RELEVANCE focused on three aspects of this natural phenomenon: the first emphasized the characteristics of polyploidy, the second described the occurrence of polyploidy among plants and animals, and the third considered past and future areas of both fundamental and pragmatic research that involve polyploidy. New information relative to origin, cytogenetics, ecology, physiology, biochemistry, and populational studies stress the need to reexamine current views on the origins of polyploidy and its significance among both plants and animals. There are major differences in the occurrence of polyploidy between. plant groups and it is proving a much more common event among bisexual vertebrates than heretofore considered possible. Crop development and improvement must utilize approaches based fundamentally on more natural systems; in fact future research should focus more on polyploidy as a natural phenomenon that needs study at all levels of endeavor from field-oriented populational aspects to sophisticated molecular analyses and genome manipulations. This volume provides a summary of current knowledge of polyploidy pertinent to botanists, zoologists, and agriculturists who are interested in the evolution o~natural systems and who are concerned with the contribution that crop improvement can make to human well-being. It is with pride that this volume is now put before the public. Together with its predecessors, it is the fruit of a truly international project. Not only does the present volume constitute the first complete synopsis of the large and horticulturally important family Crassulaceae published since the treatment by Berger (1930), but the handbook series as a whole is a landmark in succulent plant literature. The history of the project that eventually led to the publication of the present handbook series was outlined in the Preface to the Monocotyledons Volume, published in the summer of 2001. A short summary of its history will therefore suffice. Handbooks devoted to succulent plants (including cacti) have a long-standing tradition. First treatments covering the family Cactaceae were already published in the 19th century, but the first handbook dealing with the so-called "other succulents", authored by Hermann Jacobsen, was only published in 1954 - 1955, then called "Handbuch der sukkulenten Pflanzen". A revised and en larged English edition was published in 1959 and was repeatedly reprinted subsequently.

Book excerpt: Plant taxonomists seek to learn as much as they can about the earth's plant knowledge and gather them into systematic plants. Due to the vastness of Earth's vegetation, knowledge cannot be gathered without first being organised. To begin, we must take an exhaustive tally of all plant life in a given region and, eventually, the whole planet. The initial step in taxonomy is the gathering and preparation of herbarium specimens for future research. Identification is the next step, and it requires identification descriptions, drawing pictures, and creating keys. Taxonomy's main aim is to accurately identify all plant plants, and its secondary goal is to order them according to a universally agreed categorization system. The process of identification entails deciding whether or not a taxon (plural taxa) is the same as or closely related to a previously known taxon. A plant may only be properly identified if it is placed in the correct taxonomic family, and only then can it be properly classified as a species. This may be done with the aid of Floras, monographs, and herbaria, all of which are now in circulation. A plant is considered to be a new species when all attempts to identify it as a member of an existing species have been fruitless. Assembling plants into taxonomic groups based on their shared characteristics is known as classification. The result is a well-thought-out classification system in which any number of species may be placed in any given category. Strongly linked groups are grouped together in accordance with the principles underlying any current system of classification, which are based on their genetic link.
