Despite competing demands for its limited resources being challenged by the local parties and at the mercy of contradictory political directions at the international level, the UN has actually achieved more than is generally realized. This is the first volume to critically appraise all the major areas of the UN's peacekeeping, peacemaking, and peace building activities in Cyprus.

Book The Greek Cypriot Nationalist Right in the Era of British Colonialism

Download or read book The Greek Cypriot Nationalist Right in the Era of British Colonialism written by Yiannos Katsourides and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-04-05 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses the processes and factors that contributed to the emergence and eventual consolidation of the Greek Cypriot Right in the era of British colonialism. It seeks to understand political developments in Cyprus in the period extending from 1900 to 1955 with regard to their social, ideological and economic determinants. By examining changing forms of political life, a general reconstitution of the political sphere and a specific set of changes in the ideology and organisation of the Greek Cypriots, the author offers a framework for analysing Greek Cypriot right-wing party politics, identifying its sources of mobilisation and main actors such as the Church of Cyprus, and understanding its subsequent transformations.

Book Imperial Control in Cyprus

  • Author : Antigone Heraclidou
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing

  • Pages : 342 pages

Download or read book Imperial Control in Cyprus written by Antigone Heraclidou and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-06-30 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Protectorate Cyprus, education was one of the most effective tools of imperial control and political manipulation used by the British. This book charts the cultural and educational aspects of British colonial rule in Cyprus and analyses what these policies reveal about the internal struggles on the island between 1931 and 1960. Cyprus had been under British occupation since 1878, but it was in the 1930s that educational policies acquired a strong political significance and became essential in preserving the British position on the island. The co-existence of two very strongly-held and eventually conflicting national identities in Cyprus, Greek-Orthodox and Turkish Muslim, inevitably led to the politicisation of education and culture on the island. Therefore, any attempts to impose British culture, language and way of thinking onto Cypriots, or even to create a distinct Cypriot identity, had very limited success. Gradually, the education system reflected the shifting political developments in colonial Cyprus. By the start of the 1950s, schools had become a breeding ground for discontent and between 1955 and 1959 they were an indispensable part of the EOKA revolt. In this book, Antigone Heraclidou provides a new dimension to the understanding and origins of the deadlock that was to prove one of the most intractable in the final years of the British Empire.

Book The EOKA Cause

    Book Details:
  • Author : Andrew R. Novo
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2020-11-12
  • ISBN : 1838606521
  • Pages : 233 pages

Download or read book The EOKA Cause written by Andrew R. Novo and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-11-12 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the origins, conduct, and failure of Greek Cypriot nationalists to achieve the unification of Cyprus with Greece. Andrew Novo addresses the anti-colonial struggle in the context of: the competition for the nationalist narrative in Cyprus between the Left and Right, the duelling Greek-Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot nationalisms in Cyprus, the role of Turkey and Greece in the conflict on the island, and the concerns of the British Empire during its retrenchment following the Second World War. More than a narrative history of the period, an analysis of British policy, or a description of counter-insurgency operations, this book lays out an examination of the underpinnings of the enosis cause and its manifestation in action. It argues that the strategic myopia of the enosis movement shackled the cause, defined its conduct, and was the primary reason for its failure. Divided and occupied, Cyprus, and the world, deal with its unresolved legacy to this day.

Book The Cyprus Revolt

Download or read book The Cyprus Revolt written by Nancy Crawshaw and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-02-06 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1978, examines the local and international aspects of the struggle for Greek union with Cyprus – Enosis. The revolt against the British colonial power was a struggle in which guerrilla warfare, political action and international diplomacy were integrated to bring about union with Greece under the camouflaged objectives of self-determination and anti-colonialism. This book traces the origins of the dispute from the Greek War of Independence of 1821 and then deals in depth with the revolt and its international repercussions up to Independence in 1960 and the Turkish military intervention of 1974.

Book The United States and the Making of Modern Greece

Download or read book The United States and the Making of Modern Greece written by James Edward Miller and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2009-02-01 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on one of the most dramatic and controversial periods in modern Greek history and in the history of the Cold War, James Edward Miller provides the first study to employ a wide range of international archives--American, Greek, English, and French--together with foreign language publications to shed light on the role the United States played in Greece between the termination of its civil war in 1949 and Turkey's 1974 invasion of Cyprus. Miller demonstrates how U.S. officials sought, over a period of twenty-five years, to cultivate Greece as a strategic Cold War ally in order to check the spread of Soviet influence. The United States supported Greece's government through large-scale military aid, major investment of capital, and intermittent efforts to reform the political system. Miller examines the ways in which American and Greek officials cooperated in--and struggled over--the political future and the modernization of the country. Throughout, he evaluates the actions of the key figures involved, from George Papandreou and his son Andreas, to King Constantine, and from John Foster Dulles and Dwight D. Eisenhower to Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger. Miller's engaging study offers a nuanced and well-balanced assessment of events that still influence Mediterranean politics today.
