Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past fifty years the Cyprus Problem has come to be regarded as the archetype of an intractable ethnic conflict. Since 1964, the United Nations has been at the forefront of efforts to find a political solution to the dispute between the island's Greek and Turkish communities. And yet, despite the active involvement of six Secretaries-General (U Thant, Kurt Waldheim, Javier Perez de Cuellar, Boutros Boutros Ghali, Kofi Annan and Ban Ki-Moon), every attempt to reach a mutually acceptable solution has failed. Here, James Ker-Lindsay draws together new and original perspectives from the leading experts on Cyprus, including academics, policy-makers, politicians and activists. All have addressed one deceptively simple question: 'Can Cyprus be solved?' Resolving Cyprus presents a comprehensive overview of the Cyprus Problem from a variety of approaches and offers new and innovative ideas as to how to tackle one of the longest running ethnic conflicts on the world stage. This represents an essential contribution to the body of work on Cyprus, and will be required reading for all those following the debates surrounding the Cyprus problem.

This book was released on 2016-08-17 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In today's world, the issue of Cyprus is notable for all the wrong reasons: because of the duration of the divisions in Cyprus itself between Greek-Cypriots and Turkish-Cypriots (formalized since 1983 by a disputed international border across the island); because of the involvement of Greece and Turkey, for which the "hyphenated" Cypriot communities form proxy battalions; and because of the failure of the United Nations' longstanding efforts to resolve the conflict. Much of the discussion in the book revolves around the difficulty of producing viable constitutional and civic arrangements in an.

Book Cyprus and the Politics of Memory

Download or read book Cyprus and the Politics of Memory written by Rebecca Bryant and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-06-20 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The island of Cyprus has been bitterly divided for more than four decades. One of the most divisive elements of the Cyprus conflict is the writing of its history, a history called on by both communities to justify and explain their own notions of justice. While for Greek Cypriots the history of Cyprus begins with ancient Greece, for the Turkish Cypriot community the history of the island begins with the Ottoman conquest of 1571. The singular narratives both sides often employ to tell the story of the island are, as this volume argues, a means of continuing the battle which has torn the island apart, and an obstacle to resolution. Cyprus and the Politics of Memory re-orientates history-writing on Cyprus from a tool of division to a form of dialogue, and explores a way forward for the future of conflict resolution in the region.

Book Cyprus and the Roadmap for Peace

Download or read book Cyprus and the Roadmap for Peace written by Michális S. Michael and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2018-10-26 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The UN-led Cyprus peace process is in desperate need of radical transformation. This book makes a notable contribution towards changing the current discourse by empowering the main parties to better value their relationship. By altering goals and perceptions, the authors explore alternative visions for the future of Cyprus, suggesting both realistically feasible and politically challenging ideas. Using an exciting, innovative and multifocal approach, the authors discuss the practical application of specific solutions and explore the radical disagreements of the conflict at both social and political levels. Reflecting on the idea of a 'post-settlement' state of affairs and the prospect of such a reality, chapters illustrate the problems, challenges and political dynamics of Cyprus. The book explores the conceptual approaches to dialogue; reviews Greek, Turkish and Cypriot policies; probes the challenging roles of the UN and EU; canvasses Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot perspectives on the conflict; and, finally, offers dialogical reflections and debates on past and future problems. Allowing open and expressive dialogue, this book will interest those in academic and practitioner roles focused on international politics, conflict resolution and peace studies. It allows for further understanding of the complex perspectives presented in Cyprus that have great relevance in other international settings.

Book The European Union and the Cyprus Conflict

Download or read book The European Union and the Cyprus Conflict written by Thomas Diez and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the lead essay for this volume, Joshua Foa Dienstag engages in a critical encounter with the work of Stanley Cavell on cinema, focusing skeptical attention on the claims made for the contribution of cinema to the ethical character of democratic life. In this debate, Dienstag mirrors the celebrated dialogue between Rousseau and Jean D'Alembert on theatre, casting Cavell as D'Alembert in his view that we can learn to become better citizens and better people by observing a staged representation of human life, with Dienstag arguing, with Rousseau, that this misunderstands the relationship between original and copy, even more so in the medium of film than in the medium of theatre. Dienstag's provocative and stylish essay is debated by an exceptional group of interlocutors comprising Clare Woodford, Tracy B. Strong, Margaret Kohn, Davide Panagia and Thomas Dumm. The volume closes with a robust response from Dienstag to his critics.

Book Managing Intractable Conflicts

Download or read book Managing Intractable Conflicts written by Mensur Akgün and published by GPoT. This book was released on 2013 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "While the Cyprus and Transnistrian problems are just two of the numerous ongoing conflicts around the world, we believe that a comparative study of these two cases can provide useful information for actors involved in conflict resolution. The Global Political Trends Center (GPoT Center) of Istanbul Kültür University has been involved with almost all dimensions of the Cyprus conflict since the Center's formation. During the past couple of years GPoT Center has organized several rounds of talks between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots entitled the Heybeliada Talks. The meetings have been conducted following the strict Chatham House rules in a retreat on Heybeliada Island close to Istanbul, and have become a symbol of GPoT Center's second track activities on Cyprus. In addition, GPoT Center has focused on several different dimensions of the Cyprus problem through its various publications. We have come to understand that a comparative perspective is needed in order to better comprehend the psychology of the conflicting parties and formulate innovative solution oriented approaches. GPoT Center is proud to share this study that compares the Cyprus issue with the Transnistrian case, deriving lessons from both. We would like to present this book to those who are concerned not only with the two case studies but all those who are aware of the potential negative regional and international consequences of leaving these conflicts unresolved"--Page 7.

Book The Influence of Academicians on the Integration of Reconciliation Among the Youth in Cyprus

Download or read book The Influence of Academicians on the Integration of Reconciliation Among the Youth in Cyprus written by Petros Ioannides and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2016-11-21 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Peace and Conflict Studies, Security, grade: 3.28, Columbia Universität New York (School of Professional Studies), course: Master of Science in Negotiation and Conflict Resolution, Emphasis in Ombuds Practice, language: English, abstract: Disagreements, struggles and other countless forms of conflict, in their sketchiest intelligence and appreciation, are critical fragments of individual anthropological continuation. The master thesis investigates, studies and exposes actualities and concerns in one of the several tragedies of violent conflict that occurred in the decade between 1967-1977. The divergence amongst the Greek-speaking and Turkish-speaking Cypriots is unmoving merely and incompletely ‘resolute’ nowadays. The island of Cyprus has a lengthy and prolonged past of indigenous forcefulness and chaos. Through the preceding fifty years, the country has experienced uncertainty, settler and following-settler struggles, conflicting domestic nationalism, violence as well as armed conflict among several of the foremost cultural clusters, invasion, ethnic separation, and vast numbers of refugees. This is what characterizes the ‘Cyprus conflict’ after the establishment of the Republic of Cyprus in 1960 and the critical time of 1974 as explained by the Greek-speaking Cypriot. The exploration of the core diverging disputes amongst Turkish-speaking and Greek speaking Cypriots in this section validates that, their topographical discrimination and isolation, from the time of the initiation of the conflict and its occurrences, is not the unhealthiest happening arising. The mental and emotional estrangement between the conflicting ‘societies’, furthermost noticeable amongst the young citizens is demonstrated in every single phase of collective and constitutional existence. Uncertainties deep rooted to their insecurity on survival, forfeiture of confidence and anticipation of perseverance, nationalism oppression, unattended chronological accusations in addition to unsettled sufferings and distresses are continuously existent. The central exploration view designed and preserved even further diagnostically and methodically in the literature review, is encircling advanced degree culture and its prospect of whether it can undertake and exploit analytical responsibility and function in conflict resolution and settlement in the island of Cyprus revealed as an aftereffect of the structured - and with numerous paths - reconciliation determination in the country.

Book The Cyprus Problem

Download or read book The Cyprus Problem written by James Ker-Lindsay and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-04-21 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For nearly 60 years--from its uprising against British rule in the 1950s, to the bloody civil war between Greek and Turkish Cypriots in the 1960s, the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in the 1970s, and the United Nation's ongoing 30-year effort to reunite the island--the tiny Mediterranean nation of Cyprus has taken a disproportionate share of the international spotlight. And while it has been often in the news, accurate and impartial information on the conflict has been nearly impossible to obtain. In The Cyprus Problem: What Everyone Needs to Know?, James Ker-Lindsay--recently appointed as expert advisor to the UN Secretary-General's Special Advisor on Cyprus--offers an incisive, even-handed account of the conflict. Ker-Lindsay covers all aspects of the Cyprus problem, placing it in historical context, addressing the situation as it now stands, and looking toward its possible resolution. The book begins with the origins of the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities as well as the other indigenous communities on the island (Maronites, Latin, Armenians, and Gypsies). Ker-Lindsay then examines the tensions that emerged between the Greek and Turkish Cypriots after independence in 1960 and the complex constitutional provisions and international treaties designed to safeguard the new state. He pays special attention to the Turkish invasion in 1974 and the subsequent efforts by the UN and the international community to reunite Cyprus. The book's final two chapters address a host of pressing issues that divide the two Cypriot communities, including key concerns over property, refugee returns, and the repatriation of settlers. Ker-Lindsay concludes by considering whether partition really is the best solution, as many observers increasingly suggest. Written by a leading expert, The Cyprus Problem brings much needed clarity and understanding to a conflict that has confounded observers and participants alike for decades.
