Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This symposium was held in honour of Yuri Oganessian for his laurea honoris causa conferred by the University of Messina, and to celebrate Giorgio Giardina's 60th birthday. The aim of the symposium was to focus on the new projects and new lines of research in nuclear physics that will be developed in the main laboratories and research centres during the next 10-20 years. The main emphasis was on the discussion (from both the experimental and theoretical viewpoints) of properties of nuclei under extreme conditions (at large mass numbers, at large isospin, at high temperature, and at nuclear densities far from equilibrium), by investigating nuclear collisions from low to relativistic energies. This proceedings volume is a collection of all the invited talks of the plenary sessions and oral contributions given by the speakers at the parallel sessions.

This book was released on 2014-11-20 with total page 691 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of talks presented at the First International African Symposium on Exotic Nuclei (IASEN-2013). The symposium was held at Cape Town, South Africa from 2 - 6 December 2013. The IASEN2013 was dedicated to the problems of producing and investigating nuclei far from the line of stability. The symposium was organized by two scientific centers: iThemba LABS, South Africa and the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (Dubna). The main goal of the Symposium was to discuss the latest results on the production and study of the properties of the lightest to heaviest nuclei, as well as the plans for future joint investigations in the field of exotic nuclei. The talks were presented by the leading scientists in the field. Among the topics of the symposium were the following: production and study of properties of nuclei in extreme states, strongly deformed nuclei, highly excited and nuclei far from the line of stability as well as nuclei having large angular momenta. New results of the investigations are presented in this book. In particular, the latest results on the synthesis of new superheavy elements are also presented. At the Symposium were talks devoted to existing detecting devices and accelerators of exotic nuclei as well as to the future projects for the creation of similar set-ups.

This book was released on 2017-10-23 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2012, Richard E. Wainerdi retired as president and chief executive officer of the Texas Medical Center after almost three decades at the helm. During his tenure, Wainerdi oversaw the expansion of the center into the world’s largest medical complex, hosting more than fifty separate institutions. “I wasn’t playing any of the instruments, but it’s been a privilege being the conductor,” he once said to a newspaper reporter. William Henry Kellar traces Wainerdi’s remarkable life story from a bookish childhood in the Bronx to a bold move west to study petroleum engineering at the University of Oklahoma. Wainerdi went on to earn a master’s degree and a PhD from Penn State University where he immersed himself in nuclear engineering. By the late 1950s, Texas A&M University recruited Wainerdi to found the Nuclear Science Center, where he also served as professor and later associate vice president for academic affairs. In the 1980s, Wainerdi took charge of the Texas Medical Center, embarking on a “second career” that ultimately expanded the center from thirty-one institutions to fifty-three and increased its size threefold. Wainerdi pushed for and ensured a culture of collaboration and cooperation. In doing this, he developed a new nonprofit administrative model that emphasized building consensus, providing vital support services, and connecting member institutions with resources that enabled them to focus on their unique areas of expertise. At a time when Houston was widely known as the “energy capital of the world,” the city also became home to the largest medical complex in the world. Wainerdi’s success was to enable each member of the Texas Medical Center to be an integral part of something bigger and something very special in the development of modern medicine.

Book excerpt: The proceedings of the conference on Exotic Nuclei and Atomic Masses (ENAM98) are the scientific contributions to the most recent meeting in a long series that dates back to the late 1950s. The conference is held every three years and the participants produce a complete review of the fields of exotic nuclei; atomic masses, moments and radii of nuclei; fission, synthesis of heavy elements, the role of radioactive nuclei in the cosmos, fundamental studies and use of radioactive ion beams. The proceedings provide an excellent overview and an up to date summary of recent developments in a field that is undergoing a rapid growth due to the advent of radioactive ion beams.

Download or read book The Last Warrior written by Andrew F Krepinevich and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2015-01-06 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andrew Marshall is a Pentagon legend. For more than four decades he has served as Director of the Office of Net Assessment, the Pentagon's internal think tank, under twelve defense secretaries and eight administrations. Yet Marshall has been on the cutting edge of strategic thinking even longer than that. At the RAND Corporation during its golden age in the 1950s and early 1960s, Marshall helped formulate bedrock concepts of US nuclear strategy that endure to this day; later, at the Pentagon, he pioneered the development of "net assessment" -- a new analytic framework for understanding the long-term military competition between the United States and the Soviet Union. Following the Cold War, Marshall successfully used net assessment to anticipate emerging disruptive shifts in military affairs, including the revolution in precision warfare and the rise of China as a major strategic rival of the United States. In The Last Warrior, Andrew Krepinevich and Barry Watts -- both former members of Marshall's staff -- trace Marshall's intellectual development from his upbringing in Detroit during the Great Depression to his decades in Washington as an influential behind-the-scenes advisor on American defense strategy. The result is a unique insider's perspective on the changes in US strategy from the dawn of the Cold War to the present day. Covering some of the most pivotal episodes of the last half-century and peopled with some of the era's most influential figures, The Last Warrior tells Marshall's story for the first time, in the process providing an unparalleled history of the evolution of the American defense establishment.
