Book Excitation of Cyclotron harmonic Noise in a Beam generated Plasma

Download or read book Excitation of Cyclotron harmonic Noise in a Beam generated Plasma written by Michael Roberts and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deliberate, controlled excitation of a special class of electrostatic waves was achieved in a pulsed electron-beam-generated hydrogen plasma. Microwave drive signals near the electron gyro frequency were applied to the electron beam in the form of transverse electric fields. With a change in the magnetic field, the beam plasma system could be made stable or unstable with respect to the emission of narrow-band, cyclotron-harmonic radiation. In the stable mode, the r-f drive fields, applied with a bifilar helix coupler, excited cyclotron harmonic waves propagating across the magnetic field inducing narrow-band radiation. For the radiation to be observable, the Doppler frequency shift condition had to be satisfied by appropriate values of beam voltage, drive coupler pitch, magnetic field, and drive frequency. With the system in the unstable mode, the rate of plasma generation was increased, using cyclotron frequency drive fields which resulted in radiation appearing earlier (at a given receiver sensitivity) in the beam voltage pulse. Under the same conditions, the frequency of the self-excited noise was shifted by enlargement of the plasma electron orbit caused by sufficiently strong drive fields. Whether the system was in the stable or unstable mode, noise could only be measured when the density was sufficiently high that the receiving frequency was less than the upper hybrid frequency. These stimulated noise emissions are closely related to the high-harmonic, nonthermal radiation at microwave frequencies reported in recent years. (Author).

Book On the Possibility of Harmonic Operation of Cyclotron Wave Parametric Amplifiers

Download or read book On the Possibility of Harmonic Operation of Cyclotron Wave Parametric Amplifiers written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cyclotron wave amplifiers at the harmonics of the electron cyclotron frequency are investigated. Since the waves on the beam are electrostatic, harmonics are strongly excited in nonrelativistic beams if they are rotating rather than filamentary. These modes at the harmonics can couple to input cuccia couplers, and pump fields which drive parametric amplification, in very much the same way as they do on filamentary beams at the cyclotron frequency. Harmonic cyclotron wave amplifiers have the possibility of giving rise to a new class of devices at millimeter wave frequencies.

Book Electromagnetic Theory and Applications in Beam wave Electronics

Download or read book Electromagnetic Theory and Applications in Beam wave Electronics written by B. N. Basu and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1996 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is divided into two parts. The first part deals with basic electromagnetic and the second part with beam-wave electronics related to growing-wave devices including 'slow-wave' travelling-wave tubes and 'fast-wave' gyro-travelling-wave tubes. The first part is a prerequisite for the second part, while the second part covers the applications of the topics discussed in the first part. These two parts put together make the volume a self-contained treatise. In the specific applications considered, time-independent field concepts are exemplified in the problems related to the formation of an electron beam by an electron gun, the confinement of an electron beam by a magnetic focusing structure, etc. Similarly, time-dependent field concepts are exemplified in problems related to propagation through a slow-wave structure and amplification in growing-wave electron beam devices, such as travelling-wave tubes, double-stream amplifiers, beam-plasma amplifiers and gyro-travelling-wave tubes. All throughout the text, stress is given to provide complete analytical deductions with full mathematical details and present the state-of-the-art concepts.
