Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cyclopedia of Applied Electricity With the rapid increase of the use of electricity for power, lighting, traction, and electro-chemical processes, the power houses equipped for the generation of the electrical supply have increased in size from plants containing a few low-capacity dynamos, belted to their prime movers and lighting a limited district, to the modern central station, furnishing power to immense systems and over extended areas. Examples of the latter type of station are found at Niagara Falls, and such stations as the Metropolitan and Man hattan stations in New York City, and the plants of the Boston Edison Illuminating Company, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cyclopedia of Applied Electricity, Vol. 3: A Practical Guide for Electricians, Mechanics, Engineers, Students, Telegraph and Telephone Operators, and All Others Interested in Electricity The incandescent lamp was but a piece of laboratory appa ratus up to 1878, at which time Edison produced a lamp using a platinum spiral in a vacuum, as a source of light, the platinum being rendered incandescent by the passage of an electric current through it. The first successful carbon filament was made in 1879, this filament being formed from strips of bamboo. The names of Edison and Swan are intimately connected with these early experiments. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cyclopedia of Applied Electricity, Vol. 1 of 6: A General Reference Work on Dynamo-Electric Machinery, Generators, Motors, Storage Batteries, Electric Wiring, Etc The success which the American School of Correspondence has attained in teaching thousands of electricians, is in itself the best possible guarantee for the present work. Therefore, while these volumes are a marked innovation in technical litera ture - representing as they do the best ideas and methods of a large number of different authors, each an acknowledged authority in his work - they are by no means an experiment, but are in fact based on what has proved itself to be the most successful method yet devised for the education of the busy working man. Among the sections of especial timeliness are those on Alter nating-current Machinery, Storage Batteries, Electric Wiring, Lighting, etc. In these pages the authors have succeeded in presenting the subjects in such manner as to overcome the hitherto insurmountable obstacle - higher mathematics. The rules and formulae are presented in a very simple manner, and special effort has been made to illustrate every principle by dia grams, curves, and practical examples. Book A First Book of Applied Electricity Classic Reprint

Download or read book A First Book of Applied Electricity Classic Reprint written by Samuel Romilly Roget and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A First Book of Applied Electricity IN this presentation of a few of the elementary principles that underlie the useful applications of electricity and magnetism, reference has been made to the manifestations of electricity which are most often met with in daily life, without first requiring the reader to survey aspects of the subject which, although of ultimate theoretical importance, are not the basis of the applications with which he is already acquainted. For this reason, it has been sought to make the reader familiar with electric currents and their various effects, pointing out how some of these are applied, before he is introduced to electro statics; for it is considered more important for him to think in volts and amperes than in electrostatic units. In a Work of this size, it would have been impossible to enter into details of real electrical engineering practice without unduly restricting the outline of the principles involved. Only the most elementary mathematics are employed, and the object has been more to help to give an under standing of principles than to provide the equipment for the exact calculations which will be of more profit at a later stage when those principles have been mastered. Because of this property natural magnets came to be known as lodestones (leading stones), and magnets, either artificial or natural, began to be used for determining directions. The first mention of the use of a compass in Europe is in 1190. It is thought to have been introduced from China. Steinheil was engaged by Gauss to develop apparatus which had been invented by Gauss and Webber. The transmitter being of the magneto type required no battery but pro duced impulses of current, alternating in polarity, by the movement back and forth of a strong permanent magnet. The original Gauss Webber receiver was practically Webber's mirror galvanometer, which would deflect a beam of light to the right or left according to the polarity of the impulse generated by the transmitter. A given number of swings in each direction represented the various letters of the alphabet. Steinheil made several improved forms of receivers, including an ink writing recorder. This telegraph required only one circuit and it appears to have operated satisfactorily over short lines but was not successfully operated over long lines.
