Book Cyclic Nucleotides in the Nervous System

Download or read book Cyclic Nucleotides in the Nervous System written by John Daly and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The elucidation of the cellular and molecular bases underlying the inte grated function of the central nervous system, both in disease and in health, must ultimately come from the combined efforts of scientists from many disciplines, including biology, chemistry, histology, pathology, physiology, pharmacology, and psychology. Communication between scientists from these various disciplines-vital to the advancement of our understanding of the function of the nervous system-has become more and more difficult in recent years. Both increasing specialization and the incredible increases in publications pertinent to brain research in a wide spectrum of journals, in symposium volumes, in monographs, in abstracts, and in reviews contrib ute to the problems of cross-communication and even of communication within a scientific discipline. Research on the significance of cyclic nucleo tides to the function of nervous systems is particularly illustrative of the communication problem. Since the initial publications by Sutherland, Rall, and Butcher in the late fifties and early sixties on high levels of adenylate cyclase, phosphodiesterases, and cyclic AMP in brain, the ensuing litera ture of this field has expanded exponentially. At the present time, from five to ten publications relevant to cyclic nucleotides and the nervous system appear each week. Indeed, these are minimal numbers based mainly on examination of literature titles and key index words. Many articles concerned with some aspect of central function contain, buried within their text, experiments with or related to cyclic nucleotides.

This book was released on 2014-03-07 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews advances in understanding phosphodiesterases within the central nervous system and their therapeutic applications. A range of expert authors from both academia and industry describe these, then focus on the areas of greatest scientific and medical interest to provide more detailed coverage. Therapeutic and drug discovery applications are covered for diseases including Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, schizophrenia, erectile dysfunction, and spinal cord injuries. There is also a chapter on drug discovery tools such as in vitro assays and X-ray structures for medicinal chemistry studies.

Book Minireviews of the Neurosciences

Download or read book Minireviews of the Neurosciences written by Bernard B. Brodie and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-03 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Minireviews of the Neurosciences from Life Sciences discusses the regulation of tryptophan and tyrosine hydroxylase. This book also addresses the neurochemical correlations of synaptically active amino acids. This book deals first with the role of calcium in the central effects of biogenic amines; neuroendocrinology of human sleep; factors in central serotonergic synapse regulation; noradrenergic mediation of traumatic spinal cord; role of cyclic nucleotides in visual excitation; and function and organization of chromaffin vesicle. Other chapters consider the analysis of nerve growth factor, the sympathetic regulation of thyroid hormone secretion, and the mechanism if trans-synaptic enzyme induction. A study of the functions of the catecholamines and acetylcholine in endocrine regulation is presented. The final chapters examine the effects of brain monoamines in male sexual behavior and the behavior of L-dopa in Parkinson’s disease. The book can provide useful information to neurologists, students, and researchers.

Book Prothoracicotropic Hormone Cyclic Nucleotides and Proctolin in Insect Central Nervous System

Download or read book Prothoracicotropic Hormone Cyclic Nucleotides and Proctolin in Insect Central Nervous System written by Timothy Gilmore Kingan and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prothoracicotropic hormone has been partially purified from whole heads of tobacco hornworm larvae, Manduca sexta. Activity was followed with a larval bioassay. Activity was purified 4400 fold from crude extracts. The hormone was found to be a heat-stable polypeptide with an approximate molecular weight of 25,000 Daltons. The hormone has an isoelectric point in the range pH 5.25-5.50. The most purified preparations were shown to possess activity in vitro with a prothoracic gland culture system. Cyclic AMP and cyclic GMP were quantitated in the central nervous system of Manduca sexta during the pre-metamorphic endocrine activity that leads to a change from feeding to wandering behavior and to the commitment to pupal development. Cyclic AMP and cyclic GMP accumulated in the brain in tandem during this period. Cyclic nucleotide levels remained unchanged in abdominal and thoracic ganglia and in the subesophageal ganglion. Proctolin was quantitated by radioimmunoassay in the central nervous system of the Maderae cockroach, Leucophaea maderae. Proctolin RIA activity was found throughout the CNS, with the sixth abdominal and thoracic ganglia being the richest sources. RIA activity was also found in the cockroach hindgut.
