Book Field Guide to Trees of Southern Africa

Download or read book Field Guide to Trees of Southern Africa written by Braam van Wyk and published by Penguin Random House South Africa. This book was released on 2013-08-06 with total page 732 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensively updated and expanded edition of the region’s best-selling field guide to trees offers much, much more than the highly successful first edition. Fully updated text (including additional species entries) and distribution maps, numerous new photographs and a new 87-page section of full-tree photographs makes this well-loved guide even more indispensable in the field. Southern Africa has a rich variety of tree species, with an estimated 2 100 indigenous species and more than 100 naturalised aliens. Field Guide to Trees of Southern Africa describes and illustrates more than 1 000 of these, focusing on trees that are the most common and most likely to be encountered. Species are logically arranged in 43 groups based on easy-to-observe leaf and stem features, and each account is illustrated by full-colour photographs of the plant’s diagnostic parts. The text also touches on the practical uses of the plants.

Download or read book Cycads written by John Sydney Donaldson and published by World Conservation Union. This book was released on 2003 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The IUCN/SSC Cycad ACtion Plan brings together the best available information on this ancient and fascinating group of plants. Cycads were a dominant part of the earth's flora during the age of the dinosaurs and many species were common even in more recent times. However, many of the 297 species and subspecies dealt with in the Cycad Action Plan have been badly affected by habitat destruction and plant collecting within the last century. As a result, more than half the known species are now classified as threatened, and the cycads stand out as one of the most threatened groups of plants in this world. The Action Plan provides an overview of all the cycads and the threats to their survival. This is followed by separate assessments for the four broad regions where cycads now occur, namely Africa and the Indian Ocean Islands, Australia, Asia, and the New World. Trade in cycads has had a substantial impact on wild cycad populations and there is a separate chapter on trade and the effectiveness of control measures such as CITES. In addition, with so many species facing extinction in the wild, garden collections have become increasingly important and we have assessed the global status of cycad collections. Finally, the Cycad Action Plan presents a set of objectives and actions to reduce the threat to cycads in the wild and to provide ex situ conservation for those that almost certainly will become extinct in the wild. Wherever possible, we have tried to identify and build on innovative projects, such as community-based nurseries, and to link cycad consideration with other global and local initiatives such as the conservation of biodiversity hotspots.

Book A Scientific Bibliography of the Far Northern Drakensberg

Download or read book A Scientific Bibliography of the Far Northern Drakensberg written by Rodney Moffett and published by UJ Press. This book was released on 2023-04-14 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Scientific Bibliography of the “Far Northern Drakensberg” is a continuation by the Afromontane Research Unit of the University of the Free State (ARU) to document published and other similar works on the mountains of the summer rainfall area of South Africa. It follows “A Scientific Bibliography of the Drakensberg, Maloti and Adjacent Lowlands” which was published in 2020 (Moffett 2020), and which covered the area between the North-Eastern Cape and the North-Eastern Free State. The current work extends this northward by including articles and publications dating back to 1875 (E.Cohen, on the Lydenburg goldfields) reaching as far as the Wolkberg and Woodbush near Tzaneen in Limpopo Province. Figure 1 shows the boundary of the area covered, and although referred to as the Far Northern Drakensberg in this work, it is identical to that described as the LMEE, Limpopo, Mpumalanga & Eswatini Escarpment by Clarke et al (2022). Although slightly separate from the “lower” escarpment, the mountainous Barberton and adjacent Eswatini area, as well as the Leolo Mountains in eastern Sekhukhuneland are also included. Details on how the boundary in figure 1 was determined are given in Clark et al (2022). Bibliographies on two further ranges in the summer rainfall area, viz. the Magaliesberg in Gauteng province and the Soutpansberg in Limpopo province are to be the subject of future compilations.

Book Cycads Weevils and Africa

    Book Details:
  • Author : Doug Downie
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2021-05-20
  • ISBN : 9781008947726
  • Pages : 192 pages

Download or read book Cycads Weevils and Africa written by Doug Downie and published by . This book was released on 2021-05-20 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cycads are an ancient and engrossing group of plants, which are in process of being loved to death by wealthy collectors for the horticultural market the world over. One purpose in writing the book was to foster awareness of the plants and concern about their predicament. A larger purpose is to open a door into the wonderful workings of tiny insects and their interactions with and importance to their host plants. The book is about more than just the scientific setting. It is also, and maybe mostly, about the places and people encountered along the way. It is part science, part natural history, part travelogue, part memoir. It may not appeal to a mass audience, but it is a fact that there are some who will be interested. These are the cycad enthusiasts, who are passionate in their pursuit of the latest works on cycads. It is likely that other people who are curious about organisms other than themselves, and places on the planet other than their own, and about science, and who can relate to the self-doubting quest for knowledge, will find the book interesting.
