Book Sex Hormones and Immunity to Infection

Download or read book Sex Hormones and Immunity to Infection written by Sabra L. Klein and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-10-22 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why sex matters Among human and nonhuman animals, the prevalence and intensity of infection typically is higher in males than females and may reflect differences in exposure as well as susceptibility to pathogens. Elevated immunity among females is a double-edged sword in which it is beneficial against infectious diseases but is detrimental in terms of increased development of autoimmune diseases. The present book critically reviews the evolutionary origin and the functional mechanisms responsible for sexual dimorphism in response to infection. It emphasizes the value of examining responses in both males and females to improve our understanding about host-pathogen interactions in both sexes. The contributors are experts in their specific disciplines which range from microbiology and immunology to genetics, pathology, and evolutionary biology. The book aims at bringing insight to the treatment and management of infectious diseases; it delineates areas where knowledge is lacking and highlights future avenues of research.

Book excerpt: Beauty. Grace. Song. The three core traits that make up the Sirens. Traits that create chaos and tragedy wherever they go, with every move that they make. To lose the effect, they are forced to give up its cause: their song. A pact was forged centuries ago in an agreement to stop singing. A pact that continues to be broken. Crevan is the name the three Sirens take when they move to Florence, Oregon as they once more try to escape what they are. Ariana is the eldest and most beautiful Siren sister. Her entire purpose in life is to care for her sisters. A purpose that continuously washes away who she really is. Shae is the middle Siren and flaunts her differences in any way possible with little to no restraint. It is she that possesses the most grace and charm of the three. Both of which she uses to have a good time as often as possible. Kalina is the youngest sister with a tendency to screw up. Of the three traits cursed upon the Sirens, hers is the most potent and the most dangerous, for she has the greatest song. A song that pulses through her very blood and tests her control with each and every breath. Florence was another stop in their world. Another place to call home for no longer than eight years - if they were lucky. It was never meant to be more than a place to recover from the last fall. But Florence has more in store for the Sirens than they could have possibly foreseen. Once more, Kalina finds herself flirting with disaster when she befriends William James. A human male intent on gaining some form of satisfaction from the enigmatic creature he has found. Inevitably, Kalina finds herself falling for William, and her entire nature changes because of it. But her love is a betrayal in itself. Furious, her sisters are determined to do whatever they must in order to protect themselves. Now Kalina must fight the entire world in order to keep the one man who has become absolutely vital to her own survival.

Book excerpt: Winner of the ARSC’s Award for Best Research (History) in Folk, Ethnic, or World Music (2008) When Jamaican recording engineers Osbourne “King Tubby” Ruddock, Errol Thompson, and Lee “Scratch” Perry began crafting “dub” music in the early 1970s, they were initiating a musical revolution that continues to have worldwide influence. Dub is a sub-genre of Jamaican reggae that flourished during reggae’s “golden age” of the late 1960s through the early 1980s. Dub involves remixing existing recordings—electronically improvising sound effects and altering vocal tracks—to create its unique sound. Just as hip-hop turned phonograph turntables into musical instruments, dub turned the mixing and sound processing technologies of the recording studio into instruments of composition and real-time improvisation. In addition to chronicling dub’s development and offering the first thorough analysis of the music itself, author Michael Veal examines dub’s social significance in Jamaican culture. He further explores the “dub revolution” that has crossed musical and cultural boundaries for over thirty years, influencing a wide variety of musical genres around the globe. Ebook Edition Note: Seven of the 25 illustrations have been redacted.

Download or read book Operative Techniques and Recent Advances in Acute Care and Emergency Surgery written by Paolo Aseni and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-02-11 with total page 800 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to identify and shed new light on the main surgical practices involved in acute care and trauma surgery. Adopting an evidence-based approach, a multidisciplinary team of surgeons and intensivists illustrate basic and advanced operative techniques, accompanied by a comprehensive and updated reference collection. Emerging surgical procedures in Acute Care Surgery are also explored step by step with the help of ample illustrations. Further, the book offers an overview of treatment options for acute organ failure, with a focus on peculiar clinical situations that call for special treatment, including: extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), circulatory support and urgent liver transplantation. In order to identify the key determinants in decision-making and therapeutic support that can help avoid critical errors, authors not only define and discuss specific surgical techniques, but also present major issues and controversies related to it. In essence, the book can be considered a “What to do guide” that offers easy access to both basic and advanced lifesaving surgical procedures, due in part to text boxes highlighting “Tips, Tricks and Pitfalls” as well as advice on “Complications Management”. Many chapters are enriched by providing clinical case scenarios, an important educational resource including self–assessment questionnaires.

Book Doctrine and Debate in the East Christian World 300 1500

Download or read book Doctrine and Debate in the East Christian World 300 1500 written by Averil Cameron and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reign of Constantine (306-37), the starting point for the series in which this volume appears, saw Christianity begin its journey from being just one of a number of competing cults to being the official religion of the Roman/Byzantine Empire. The involvement of emperors had the, perhaps inevitable, result of a preoccupation with producing, promoting and enforcing a single agreed version of the Christian creed. Under this pressure Christianity in the East fragmented into different sects, disagreeing over the nature of Christ, but also, in some measure, seeking to resist imperial interference and to elaborate Christianities more reflective of and sensitive to local concerns and cultures. This volume presents an introduction to, and a selection of the key studies on, the ways in which and means by which these Eastern Christianities debated with one another and with their competitors: pagans, Jews, Muslims and Latin Christians. It also includes the iconoclast controversy, which divided parts of the East Christian world in the seventh to ninth centuries, and devotes space both to the methodological tools that evolved in the process of debate and the promulgation of doctrine, and to the literary genres through which the debates were expressed.
