Book excerpt: Illustrated throughout with photographs and drawings from nearly two centuries of fashion, this irresistible volume is a history of the ongoing love affair between designers and their muses. Lavishly illustrated and thematically arranged, Fashion Muse looks at the many iterations a muse can take: Greek goddess, fairy-tale princess, wife, lover, supermodel, celebrity, and artist. A prominent art historian with a profound knowledge of the culture of fashion, Debra N. Mancoff delves far and wide to present pairings both familiar and surprising, including the first couturier Charles Frederick Worth and his wife; Elsa Schiaparelli and the Surrealists; Yves Saint Laurent and the painter Mondrian; Oleg Cassini and Jacqueline Kennedy; and Audrey Hepburn and Hubert de Givenchy. She reveals numerous designers whose muse was their own image, from Coco Chanel to Diane von Furstenberg to the Olsen twins. And she examines the influence of figures from the worlds of art, celebrity, and pop culture. Entertaining, inspiring, and surprising, this enthralling exploration places the muse where he or she belongs: at the highest peaks of the creative process. ILLUSTRATION: 250 illustrations 100 in colour

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this day and age, most women are well aware that dieting (and the accompanying deprivation) is no way to lose weight. But you can't blame a girl for trying-after all, who doesn't want to be thinner, feel happier, and look fabulous? Who doesn't want to fit into her skinny jeans and feel like a million bucks? Mimi Spencer has spent most of her life surrounded by catwalks and ultrathin celebrities--and she was sick of dieting. So she created the anti-diet. In 101 Things to do Before You Diet, Spencer shares the tips, tricks, and solutions that finally helped her lose those last few pounds and shows women how to trim, flatter, and accept every inch of their bodies. With ample doses of empathy and irreverence, Spencer offers readers 101 figure-flattering tips, from choosing the right fashion to just saying no to fat traps and calorie pitfalls. Spencer's candid advice (drawn from years spent at the frontlines of fashion) and her uniquely relatable voice (drawn from decades of being a woman on a diet) will keep readers entertained as they knock off a few pounds and learn how to love the skin they're in.
Download or read book Confidence Culture written by Shani Orgad and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2021-12-06 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Confidence Culture, Shani Orgad and Rosalind Gill argue that imperatives directed at women to “love your body” and “believe in yourself” imply that psychological blocks rather than entrenched social injustices hold women back. Interrogating the prominence of confidence in contemporary discourse about body image, workplace, relationships, motherhood, and international development, Orgad and Gill draw on Foucault’s notion of technologies of self to demonstrate how “confidence culture” demands of women near-constant introspection and vigilance in the service of self-improvement. They argue that while confidence messaging may feel good, it does not address structural and systemic oppression. Rather, confidence culture suggests that women—along with people of color, the disabled, and other marginalized groups—are responsible for their own conditions. Rejecting confidence culture’s remaking of feminism along individualistic and neoliberal lines, Orgad and Gill explore alternative articulations of feminism that go beyond the confidence imperative.
