Book Geology of the Appalachian Caledonian Orogen in Canada and Greenland

Download or read book Geology of the Appalachian Caledonian Orogen in Canada and Greenland written by Harold Williams and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 1995 with total page 951 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume focuses on the Canadian Appalachian region. The chapter on the East Greenland Caledonides stands alone and there is no attempt to integrate the geological accounts of the two far removed regions. Rocks of the Canadian Appalachian region are described under four broad temporal divisions: lower Paleozoic and older, middle Paleozoic, upper Paleozoic, and Mesozoic. The rocks of these temporal divisions define geographic zones, belts, basins, and graben, respectively. The area is of special interest because so many modern concepts of mountain building are based on Appalachian rocks & structures.

Book The Sedimentary Basins of the United States and Canada

Download or read book The Sedimentary Basins of the United States and Canada written by Andrew Miall and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2008-12-03 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years there have been rapid strides in our understanding of plate-tectonic processes, many developments in methods of basin analysis, and the accumulation of much new surface and subsurface geological and geophysical data. Projects such as COCORP (in the United States) and Lithoprobe (in Canada) have provided essential insights into the deep crustal structure of the continent. Synthesis of all the available information about North America’s geological regions has not been attempted systematically since the “Decade of North American Geology project undertaken by the Geological Society of America and the Geological Survey of Canada nearly twenty years ago. The book commences with a summary of the Phanerozoic geological history of the United States and Canada, illustrated with a suite of new paleogeographic maps, and tying in each of the subsequent regional chapters by the inclusion of numerous cross-references. This followed by a set of fifteen regional syntheses of the principal tectonic regions of the United States and Canada, focusing on the stratigraphic and tectonic history of the major sedimentary basins. Most of these chapters have been contributed by specialists, drawing on their own research, and providing interpretive summaries of a type not previously attempted. Up-to-date synthesis of the sedimentary/tectonic history of the major areas of the United States and Canada Up-to-date references Many new color maps

Download or read book From Rodinia to Pangea written by Richard P. Tollo and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 2010 with total page 972 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Appalachians constitute one of Earth's major tectonic features and have served as a springboard for innovative geologic thought for more than 170 years. This volume contains 36 original papers reporting the results of research performed throughout nearly the entire length and breadth of the Appalachian region, including all major provinces and geographical areas. Memoir 206 was designed to commemorate the (near-)fortieth anniversary of the publication of the classic Studies of Appalachian Geology volumes that appeared just prior to the application of plate tectonic concepts to the region. Contributions concerning structural evolution, sedimentation, stratigraphy, magmatic processes, metamorphism, tectonics, and terrane accretion illustrate the wide range of ongoing research in the area and collectively serve to mark the considerable progress in scientific thought that has occurred during the past four decades."--pub. desc.

Book Betts Cove Ophiolite and Its Cover Rocks Newfoundland

Download or read book Betts Cove Ophiolite and Its Cover Rocks Newfoundland written by Jean H. Bédard and published by Natural Resources Canada. This book was released on 2000 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Betts Cove area of the Baie Verte Peninsula, northern Newfoundland, is of interest for its mineral exploration history and for its ophiolitic complex formed through sea floor spreading. This study attempts to resolve some of the unresolved problems related to the area's stratigraphy, the magmatic affinity of its plutonic section, and the geologic controls on ore deposition. The report presents a revised stratigraphy for the area; a petrologic description of the rock units of the Betts Cove ophiolite, Snooks Arm Group, adjoining ophiolitic rocks, and post-Ordovician rocks; a history of structural deformation in the area; information on mineral chemistry, geochemistry, and petrogenesis; and tectonic models illustrating the evolution of the ophiolite and its cover rocks. The final section describes mineral deposits & occurrences in the area, including historic volcanogenic copper/sulphide mines, the currently producing Nugget Pond mine, and various gold occurrences.

Book Flow Processes in Faults and Shear Zones

Download or read book Flow Processes in Faults and Shear Zones written by G. Ian Alsop and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2004 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faults and their deeper level equivalents, shear zones, are localized regions of intense deformation within the Earth. They are recognized at all scales from micro to plate boundary, and are important examples of the nature of heterogeneous deformation in natural rocks. Faults and shear zones are significant as they profoundly influence the location, architecture and evolution of a broad range of geological phenomenao The topography and bathymetry of the Earth's surface is marked by mountain belts and sedimentary basins that are controlled by faults and shear zoneso In addition, faults and shear zones control fluid migration and transport including hydrothermal and hydrocarbon systems. Once faults and shear zones are established, they are often long-lived features prone to multiple reactivation over very large time-scales. This collection of papers addresses lithospheric deformation and the rheology of shear zones, together with processes of partitioning and the unravelling of fault and shear zone histories.

Book Laurentia Gondwana Connections Before Pangea

Download or read book Laurentia Gondwana Connections Before Pangea written by Víctor A. Ramos and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 1999-01-01 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores the tectonics interaction among the exotic terrians between Laurentia and Southwest Gondwana. The authors reveal data that sheds light on pre-Pangea connections between Laurentia and Southwest Gondwana. These data concern the presence of Ollenelus and associated fauna in the Precordillera of central Western South America; the common early Paleozoic paleomagnetic data, the presence of a large early Paleozoic carbo nate platform distinct from the Southwest Gondwanan clastic platforms associated with glacial deposits, and the exotic nature of the Grenville basement of this platform.
