Download or read book Neurovirology written by Richard B. Tenser and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-07-31 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The plethora of miscommunication and disinformation about how SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) spreads suggests a widespread misunderstanding of how viruses work. This book will focus on the interpretation of scientific and medical results, giving the reader guidance on interpreting virological data, including the concepts of 'live' versus infectious virus. The first section covers the background of virology and immunology, introducing the reader to the science of virology (using COVID-19 as an illustration) and considers the measurement of infectious disease, using polymerase chain reaction (PCR), molecular biology and the immune system. The second section looks at clinical virology and neurovirology. Taking a novel perspective on how viruses may play a role in evolution, this book discusses antivirals and how autoimmune disorders may be caused or triggered by viruses. Concise and practical, this is a key resource for those working in neurology, infectious disease and virology.

Download or read book Emerging Cognitive Neuroscience and Related Technologies written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2008-12-06 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emerging Cognitive Neuroscience and Related Technologies, from the National Research Council, identifies and explores several specific research areas that have implications for U.S. national security, and should therefore be monitored consistently by the intelligence community. These areas include: neurophysiological advances in detecting and measuring indicators of psychological states and intentions of individuals the development of drugs or technologies that can alter human physical or cognitive abilities advances in real-time brain imaging breakthroughs in high-performance computing and neuronal modeling that could allow researchers to develop systems which mimic functions of the human brain, particularly the ability to organize disparate forms of data. As these fields continue to grow, it will be imperative that the intelligence community be able to identify scientific advances relevant to national security when they occur. To do so will require adequate funding, intelligence analysts with advanced training in science and technology, and increased collaboration with the scientific community, particularly academia. A key tool for the intelligence community, this book will also be a useful resource for the health industry, the military, and others with a vested interest in technologies such as brain imaging and cognitive or physical enhancers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Working in an emergency department as a psychiatrist or mental health clinician requires an ability to gain a patient's rapport, establish a differential diagnosis, assess risk, and make disposition decisions in a fast-paced and potentially chaotic setting. A Case-Based Approach to Emergency Psychiatry, written by psychiatrists who work daily in the emergency setting, will assist the emergency department clinician in learning these skills through vivid, complex cases that illustrate basic principles of assessment, diagnosis, and treatment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science never solves apr oblem without creating ten more Geor ge Bernard Shaw How prophetic the above words prove to be when applied to the advances of 20th century medicine. Prior to Banting and Best, chnicians were unaware of the ravages of diabetes, patients simply wasted away and died. Following the purifica tion of insulin, clinicians now had to deal with diabetic retinopathy, diabetic neph ropathy and all the other complications of long-term diabetes. A little over 50 years ago, the first successful human kidney transplant was performed in Boston. The first 30 years of the experience had successes when compared to the alternative but were a constant struggle to get even 50% of the grafts from deceased donors to survive more than a year. However, the science continued to advance knowledge of the immune response. With this came more and increasingly powerful tools for the clinician. Suddenly, success rates of 80-90% at one year were attainable. With this success came new problems, new complications and clinicians now had to worry about the long-term consequences of their therapy as patients were surviving with functional grafts for extended periods. A particular infectious complication evolved with the application of ever more powerful immunosuppressant drugs. Astute clinicians noted that occasionally cellular rejections seemed to get worse with steroids. Despite their best efforts and the use of powerful drugs, patients lost their grafts to overwhelming interstitial infiltrates not seen before.

Download or read book Neurological Psychiatric and Developmental Disorders written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brain disordersâ€"neurological, psychiatric, and developmentalâ€"now affect at least 250 million people in the developing world, and this number is expected to rise as life expectancy increases. Yet public and private health systems in developing countries have paid relatively little attention to brain disorders. The negative attitudes, prejudice, and stigma that often surround many of these disorders have contributed to this neglect. Lacking proper diagnosis and treatment, millions of individual lives are lost to disability and death. Such conditions exact both personal and economic costs on families, communities, and nations. The report describes the causes and risk factors associated with brain disorders. It focuses on six representative brain disorders that are prevalent in developing countries: developmental disabilities, epilepsy, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, and stroke. The report makes detailed recommendations of ways to reduce the toll exacted by these six disorders. In broader strokes, the report also proposes six major strategies toward reducing the overall burden of brain disorders in the developing world.
