Book excerpt: These poems are "old-fashioned" in the best sense of that term-unabashedly romantic and joyful in their celebration of the natural world. Full of feeling but not the least bit sentimental, this collection offers a welcome contrast to the angst and pessimism that seems to inspire so much contemporary poetry. - Charles Coe - author of Memento Mori

Freddy wants to work on his art projects (when he isn't stuck in summer school). Herb wants to swim every day. Then their dad makes a big announcement: one of the inventions their mom came up with before she passed away has sold, and now they're millionaires! Download or read book Empire s Nature written by Amy R. W. Meyers and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2012-12-01 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Completed in 1747, Mark Catesby's Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands was the first major illustrated publication on the flora and fauna of Britain's American colonies. Together with his Hortus Britanno-Americanus (1763), which detailed plant species that might be transplanted successfully to British soil, Catesby's Natural History exerted an important, though often overlooked, influence on the development of art, natural history, and scientific observation in the eighteenth century. Inspired by a major traveling exhibition of Catesby's watercolor drawings from the Royal Library, Windsor Castle, this collection of interdisciplinary essays considers Catesby's endeavors as a naturalist-artist, scientific explorer, experimental horticulturist, ornamental gardener, and early environmental thinker in terms of the interests held by the various, overlapping communities in which he functioned--particularly as those interests related to the British colonial enterprise. The contributors are David R. Brigham, Joyce E. Chaplin, Mark Laird, Amy R. W. Meyers, Therese O'Malley, and Margaret Beck Pritchard.

Book D H Lawrence Poet

Download or read book D H Lawrence Poet written by Keith Sagar and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2008 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new collection of Keith Sagar's writings on the poetry of D H Lawrence includes many new interpretations of well-known poems. It ends with a year-by-year checklist of reviews and criticism of Lawrence's poems, from 1913 to the present. Though much has been written about Lawrence's poetry (as revealed by the several hundred entries in the book's checklist of criticism), there have been relatively few full length studies. This book deals with the whole range of his poetry from his earliest poems, such as 'To Campions' and 'To Guelder Roses', through the poems inspired by his elopement with and subsequent marriage to Frieda Weekley (Look! We Have Come Through!), to the mature achievement, in free verse forms inspired by Walt Whitman, of Birds, Beasts and Flowers, Pansies and Last Poems. The genesis of the poems in Lawrence's life is explored; and there are new interpretations of his most memorable poems, such as 'The Wild Common', 'Piano', 'Song of a Man Who Has Come Through', Tortoises, 'Peach', 'Pomegranate', 'Snake', 'Bavarian Gentians' and 'The Ship of Death'.

Book Hidden Fields

    Book Details:
  • Author : Charles Ford
  • Publisher : iUniverse
  • Release : 2009-02
  • ISBN : 1440108617
  • Pages : 258 pages

Download or read book Hidden Fields written by Charles Ford and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2009-02 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Hidden Fields, choices are further examined with respect to various themes. Charles Ford introduces another concept about choices; there are internal choices, and external ones. Now, in the general sense choices are seen as external state-of-affairs and are associated with our bodies, such as an individual act or behavior, so one sees the manifested action. The internal choices stem from our various selves, choices that are made by our souls and spirits, and our feeling and reasoning, respectively. The individual has to think or feel before he/she acts. Charles believes ultimately both internal and external choices need to be in harmony with each other, so better choices can be seen in an individual life. Charles continues to write and strives for excellence in all his poems. He invites the readers into his presence to share and exchange of thoughts and views about life experiences. All readers can be at home with him from simple to complex truths and philosophies about life. Charles wants the readers to discover something about their selves as they read his poems for as human beings we are more similar than difference in our choices. It does not matter what race, culture, or sex differences we have. We are still human being; for we all think, sleep, and dream. And can truly make better choices. Charles hopes all readers can clearly see this in his poems.

Book The Pleasure Gardens of Virginia

Download or read book The Pleasure Gardens of Virginia written by Peter Martin and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-14 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using a rich assortment of illustrations and biographical sketches, Peter Martin relates the experiences of colonial gardeners who shaped the natural beauty of Virginia's wilderness into varied displays of elegance. He shows that ornamental gardening was a scientific, aesthetic, and cultural enterprise that thoroughly engaged some of the leading figures of the period, including the British governors at Williamsburg and the great plantation owners George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, William Byrd, and John Custis. In presenting accounts of their gardening efforts, Martin reveals the intricacies of colonial garden design, plant searches, experimentation, and the problems in adapting European landscaping ideas to local climate. These writings also bring to life the social and commercial interaction between Williamsburg and the plantations, together with early American ideas about cultured living. While placing Virginia's gardening in the larger context of the colonial South, Martin tells a very human story of how this art both influenced and reflected the quality of colonial life. As Virginia grew economically and culturally, the garden became a projection of the gardener's personal identity, as exemplified by the endeavors of Washington and Jefferson at Mount Vernon and Monticello. In order to recapture the gardens as they existed in colonial times, Martin brings together paintings, drawings, and the findings of modern archaeological excavations. Originally published in 1991.
