Book excerpt: The first book provides a glimpse into the case notes of Robert T. Cooper, and pertains to his experience in treating cancer patients using what he termed "arborivital treatment". By this he meant prescribing a single dose of a plant mother tincture prepared from a fresh, living (vita = life) specimen. Cooper was of the opinion that living plants have an inherent curative action that does not require trituration or succession to bring it forth. In his introductory notes, Cooper draws an analogy between a seed which, in favourable soil will sprout, and grow into a plant, and the seed of cancer in a human being which, again, only in favourable conditions, will develop into a cancerous tumour. In using arborivital tinctures, Cooper suggests that it is possible to combat the "growth force' of a malignant tumour with the growth force of a suitable plant -- undoubtedly an ingenious variation on the principle of similars!

Book Treating Cancer with Herbs

Download or read book Treating Cancer with Herbs written by Michael Tierra and published by Lotus Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cancer is the scourge of our age. More than any other disease, cancer has captured our fears and projected despair throughout society. Our bodies have become the experimental "real life" testing grounds for countless chemical toxins, pollutants, refined foods and stresses. These toxins are clearly exerting their effect in the rise of numerous forms of cancer striking every part of our bodies. The medical profession is attempting to attack these cancers with every available form of chemical, radiation, and invasive surgery. While modern medicine has long recognized the healing potential of herbs (some of the most commonly used cancer medicines were originally developed from herbs), we have been indoctrinated to believe that surgery, radiation and chemical therapies are the only successful procedures, even though they tend to fail much of the time and may actually destroy the quality of life to such a degree that many believe the "cure" is wors than the disease. There is another approach to the treatment of cancer. Finding cancer's root causes and applying a holistic understanding of lifestyle, diet, stress-reduction and appropriate nutritional and herbal support can strengthen the body and its immune system, restore the spirit and balance the psyche of the cancer patient. With this integrative approach, a healthy mental and emotional balance joins a healthy approach to life to truly treat cancer. Not every cancer patient is "cured," but every patient is brought to a state of understanding which in many cases leads to what appear to be miraculous remissions. In other cases, it allows the individual to experience a quality of life and passing uncommon in our society: the ability to face life and death with dignity and a sense of completion. Book jacket.

The recent breakthroughs in naturally occurring small molecules from herbal medicines have provided experimental evidence and are clinically significant in treatment strategies. This unique volume presents the recent developments in the field of herbal medicines for the treatment of diseases and cancer. Recent progress on small molecules isolated from herbal medicines that exhibit therapeutic benefits in humans is highlighted. The book provides an overview of the significant discoveries and pioneering contributions of herbal medicines in combination with other drugs; the author's evaluation of the combination therapy in cancer treatment; and a recent discovery of crocodile tissue extract with pharmacological properties.

  • Pages : 216 pages

Download or read book Marijuana As Medicine written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-12-30 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some people suffer from chronic, debilitating disorders for which no conventional treatment brings relief. Can marijuana ease their symptoms? Would it be breaking the law to turn to marijuana as a medication? There are few sources of objective, scientifically sound advice for people in this situation. Most books about marijuana and medicine attempt to promote the views of advocates or opponents. To fill the gap between these extremes, authors Alison Mack and Janet Joy have extracted critical findings from a recent Institute of Medicine study on this important issue, interpreting them for a general audience. Marijuana As Medicine? provides patientsâ€"as well as the people who care for themâ€"with a foundation for making decisions about their own health care. This empowering volume examines several key points, including: Whether marijuana can relieve a variety of symptoms, including pain, muscle spasticity, nausea, and appetite loss. The dangers of smoking marijuana, as well as the effects of its active chemical components on the immune system and on psychological health. The potential use of marijuana-based medications on symptoms of AIDS, cancer, multiple sclerosis, and several other specific disorders, in comparison with existing treatments. Marijuana As Medicine? introduces readers to the active compounds in marijuana. These include the principal ingredient in Marinol, a legal medication. The authors also discuss the prospects for developing other drugs derived from marijuana's active ingredients. In addition to providing an up-to-date review of the science behind the medical marijuana debate, Mack and Joy also answer common questions about the legal status of marijuana, explaining the conflict between state and federal law regarding its medical use. Intended primarily as an aid to patients and caregivers, this book objectively presents critical information so that it can be used to make responsible health care decisions. Marijuana As Medicine? will also be a valuable resource for policymakers, health care providers, patient counselors, medical faculty and studentsâ€"in short, anyone who wants to learn more about this important issue.

Book Constructions of Cancer in Early Modern England

Download or read book Constructions of Cancer in Early Modern England written by Alanna Skuse and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-11-11 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is open access under a CC-BY licence. Cancer is perhaps the modern world's most feared disease. Yet, we know relatively little about this malady's history before the nineteenth century. This book provides the first in-depth examination of perceptions of cancerous disease in early modern England. Looking to drama, poetry and polemic as well as medical texts and personal accounts, it contends that early modern people possessed an understanding of cancer which remains recognizable to us today. Many of the ways in which medical practitioners and lay people imagined cancer – as a 'woman's disease' or a 'beast' inside the body – remain strikingly familiar, and they helped to make this disease a byword for treachery and cruelty in discussions of religion, culture and politics. Equally, cancer treatments were among the era's most radical medical and surgical procedures. From buttered frog ointments to agonizing and dangerous surgeries, they raised abiding questions about the nature of disease and the proper role of the medical practitioner.
