Chapters III to XIV give a relatively accurate description of the territory of each historically attested Aramean group or state and present a detailed narrative of political events. Chapter XIV, the most extensive, considers the situation of the Arameans in Babylonia, also in relation to the Chaldeans and to the North-Arabian tribes. Chapters XV to XVIII deal with Aramean institutions, economy, legal practices, and religion. Special attention is paid to linguistic features of the available evidence, when they can help resolving historical questions. The book concludes with an extensive general index and with an index of biblical sources.

The tablets from Tell Beydar constitute the most important find of Presargonic texts from Northern Mesopotamia. A first volume with the edition of the tablets from seasons 1993-1995 appeared in 1996 in the same series (Subartu II). The 69 new texts include administrative documents, a considerable number of inscribed and sealed bullae and a Sumerian literary text. Indexes and additions to Subartu II close this part. Several studies, mostly by authors of the volume, concentrate on various aspects of the new texts: the archaeological context (M. Lebeau); sheep husbandry at Beydar; the bullae and their administrative use; inscribed seals and sealings on the bullae (G. Jans); women in the Beydar texts; the Sumerian literary text; Nabada/Tell Beydar in its regional setting (with J. Ur); and an overview of the Tell Beydar texts in Arabic by F. Ismail. Imperial Peripheries in the Neo-Assyrian Period focuses on the variability of imperial strategies and local responses to Assyrian power across time and space. An international team of archaeologists and historians draws upon both new and existing evidence from excavations, surveys, texts, and material culture to highlight the strategies that the Neo-Assyrian Empire applied to manage its diverse and widespread empire as well as the mixed reception of those strategies by subjects close to and far from the center. Case studies from around the ancient Near East illustrate a remarkable variety of responses to Assyrian aggression, economic policies, and cultural influences. As a whole, the volume demonstrates both the destructive and constructive roles of empire, including unintended effects of imperialism on socioeconomic and cultural change.
