Book Culture Conflict and Mediation in the Asian Pacific

Download or read book Culture Conflict and Mediation in the Asian Pacific written by Bruce E. Barnes and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2007-08-09 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The countries of China, Taiwan, Singapore, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia, and Thailand are brought together for the first time in an integrated and systematic work outlining each country's cultural themes, cultural practices, and preferred conflict resolution mechanisms. The new "ADR" processes and centuries-old mediation and conciliation systems used in these countries are compared with the evolving mediation and ADR systems, including facilitation in North America and the West. This comprehensive study analyzes the cultural "themes" commonly found in these countries' religious conflicts; and presents over 30 different stories, case studies, and conflict resolution scenarios from the region. Culture, Conflict, and Mediation in the Asian Pacific looks beyond traditional regional boundaries to group Hawai'i with the nine Asian countries as an example of mediation systems and cultural influence on the most "Asian" of the U.S. states (over 2/3 of the population of Hawai'i is Asian-American).

Book Etiquette and Taboos around the World

Download or read book Etiquette and Taboos around the World written by Ken Taylor and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2017-10-05 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An interesting resource for learning about the cultural differences and characteristics of people across the globe, this encyclopedia covers the "do's" and "don'ts" of a breadth of countries and major ethnic groups. Readers of this one-volume reference will gain useful knowledge of what travelers should and shouldn't do when in countries outside of the United States. After a general introduction, approximately 100 alphabetically arranged entries cover topics such as greeting and meeting, appearance and dress, table manners, body language, social situations and hospitality, verbal communications, business etiquette, religious etiquette, gift-giving, and even "netiquette" regarding social media. Sidebars and images throughout make the text more accessible and engaging, and additional readings at the end of each entry as well as the bibliography offer opportunities for further research on the subject. The content also directly supports the National Geography Standards and the AP Human Geography curriculum for high school students as they learn about the cultural differences and characteristics of people in major ethnic groups across the globe.

Book Culture Shock and Japanese American Relations

Download or read book Culture Shock and Japanese American Relations written by Sadao Asada and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 2007-06 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since Commodore Perry sailed into Uraga Channel, relations between the United States and Japan have been characterized by culture shock. Now a distinguished Japanese historian critically analyzes contemporary thought, public opinion, and behavior in the two countries over the course of the twentieth century, offering a binational perspective on culture shock as it has affected their relations. In these essays, Sadao Asada examines the historical interaction between these two countries from 1890 to 2006, focusing on naval strategy, transpacific racism, and the atomic bomb controversy. For each topic, he offers a rigorous analysis of both American and Japanese perceptions, showing how cultural relations and the interchange of ideas have been complex--and occasionally destructive. Culture Shock and Japanese-American Relations contains insightful essays on the influence of Alfred Mahan on the Japanese navy and on American images of Japan during the 1920s. Other essays consider the progressive breakdown of relations between the two countries and the origins of the Pacific War from the viewpoint of the Japanese navy, then tackle the ultimate shock of the atomic bomb and Japan's surrender, tracing changing perceptions of the decision to use the bomb on both sides of the Pacific over the course of sixty years. In discussing these subjects, Asada draws on Japanese sources largely inaccessible to Western scholars to provide a host of eye-opening insights for non-Japanese readers. After studying in America for nine years and receiving degrees from both Carleton College and Yale University, Asada returned to Japan to face his own reverse culture shock. His insights raise important questions of why people on opposite sides of the Pacific see things differently and adapt their perceptions to different purposes. This book marks a major effort toward reconstructing and understanding the conflicted course of Japanese-American relations during the first half of the twentieth century.

Book Serving Library Users from Asia

Download or read book Serving Library Users from Asia written by John Hickok and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-06-12 with total page 752 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asian populations are among some of the fastest growing cultural groups in the US. While books on serving other target groups in libraries have been published (e.g., disabled, Latino, seniors, etc.), few books on serving library users of Asian heritage have been written. Thus the timely need for this book. Rather than a generalized overview of Asians as a whole, this book has 24 separate chapters—each on 24 specific Asian countries/cultures of East, Southeast, and South Asia—with a wealth of resources for understanding, interacting with, outreaching to, and serving library users of each culture. Resources include cultural guides (both print and online), language helps (with sample library vocabulary), Asian booksellers, nationwide cultural groups, professional literature, and more. Resources and suggestions are given for all three types of libraries—public, school, and academic—making this book valuable for all librarians. The demographics of each Asian culture (numbers and distribution)—plus history of immigration and international student enrollment—is also featured. As a bonus, each chapter spotlights a US public, school, and academic library providing model outreach to Asian library users. Additionally, this book provides a detailed description and analysis of libraries in each of the 24 Asian countries. The history, development, facilities, conditions, technology, classification systems, and more—of public, school, and academic libraries—are all discussed, with detailed documentation. Country conditions influencing libraries and library use are also described: literacy levels, reading cultures, languages and writing systems, educational systems, and more. Based on the author’s 15 years of research and travels to Asia, this work is a must-have for all librarians.
