Book excerpt: The development of Chinese Christian thought in history is based on actual historical events and forsaking the slavish aspect of humanity (the theory of the superiority of Western culture when Western Christianity was introduced to China from the beginning) while this dialectical relationship occurred in the interactive relationship between different events in history and is organically linked. Therefore, this research is an interdisciplinary study including theology, religious thought, comparative theology, history, culture, hermeneutics, philosophy, politics, economics and international relations. As Marx once suggested, there is a kind of national spirit performing in different fields, and this national spirit follows each nation as it enters the stage in history. We will see similar phenomena in the study of Chinese Christianity. It is like the interpretation of the gospel by the Greek culture of the past, the European culture to today's American culture also give an interpretation of the gospel. At the present time, the Chinese people are trying to interpret the gospel from their own culture as well. It, of course, involves the process by which the Chinese find their own role in the gospel of Christ. This is a discovery and in effective action to their own role by the Chinese Christian groups, and becomes an interpretation of Chinese Christianity. This relates to a diachronic trait of human experience, the continuous reflection on the gospel, that correlates episodic and configurative. The fragments of sages from various periods, such as Gützlaff, James Legge, Jing Dianying, Watchman Nee, Francis Wei and T.C. Chao, have become intertextuality in the process. Of course, this is also a configurative and re-configurative. Through the process of time, the trial in the diachronic integrates into a testable interpretation. This interpretation enables Chinese Christian theology to find its identity and its contribution through this status. It also breaks the idol of the superiority of Western culture and subverts the idol of the feudal system in Chinese culture as testimony.

Drawing on data from governments, NGOs, the World Values Survey and more addressing over one hundred countries, he argues that values, as the "building blocks" of culture, are directly related to the speed with which social, cultural and economic development occurs. Basáñez utilizes quantitative survey data to delineate three cultural hyperclusters across the globe: cultures of honor, which prioritize political authority; cultures of achievement, which emphasize economic advancement; and cultures of joy, which focus on social interactions. According to Basáñez, these cultures evolved chronologically, mirroring the development of agrarian, industrial and service societies. He argues that a country's developmental path is profoundly influenced by its people's values and culture, as crystallized through its formal and informal governing institutions. Culture is passed down over generations through families, schools, the media, religious institutions, leadership, and the law. Although culture and values are in a permanent state of evolution, leaders and policymakers can also push cultural change in order to promote desirable goals such as economic growth, democratization, and equality. Over the course of the book, Basáñez introduces two new measures of development: the Objective Development Index (which blends rubrics such as health, education, income, gender equality, political rights and civil liberties, and economic inequality) and the Subjective Development Index (which uses responses to the World Values Survey to classify countries according to their values).

This study of the legal system of the Zapotec village of Talea suggests that compromise and, more generally, harmony are strategies used by colonized groups to protect themselves from encroaching powerholders or strategies the colonizers use to defend themselves against organized subordinates. Harmony models are present, despite great organizational and cultural differences, in many parts of the world. However, the basic components of harmony ideology are the same everywhere: an emphasis on conciliation, recognition that resolution of conflict is inherently good and that its reverse - continued conflict or controversy - is bad, a view of harmonious behaviour as more civilized than disputing behaviour, the belief that consensus is of greater survival value than controversy. The book's central thesis is that harmony ideology in Talea today is both a product of nearly 500 years of colonial encounter and a strategy for resisting the state's political and cultural hegemony.

Governments all over the world are facing growing pressure to integrate the many diverse elements and subcultures which make up modern pluralistic societies. This book examines the idea of harmony, and its place in politics and governance, both in theory and practice, in Asia, the West and elsewhere. It explores and analyses the meanings, mechanisms, dimensions and methodologies of harmony as a normative political ideal in both Western and Asian philosophical traditions. The book argues that in Western political thought - which sees politics as primarily concerned with resolving social conflicts and protecting individual rights - the concept of harmony has often been neglected. In contrast, since earliest times harmony or ‘he’ has been a profound theme in Confucian thought, and current leaders of many East Asian governments, and the Chinese government, have explicitly declared that the realisation of a harmonious society is their aim. The book also assesses how harmony is pursued, jeopardized or deformed in the real world of politics, based upon empirical analysis of a variety of different cultural, social and political contexts, including: China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Denmark, Latin America and the Scandinavian countries.
