Book The Effect of Cultural Schema on Secondary English Learner Reading Comprehension

Download or read book The Effect of Cultural Schema on Secondary English Learner Reading Comprehension written by Caroline Kezmoh Dutton and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study the role of cultural schema in secondary English learners' reading comprehension of a period-specific text was observed and measured through multiplechoice and fill-in testing. Spanish speaking English learners at the high school level, who were either born in the United States or Mexico, with varying levels of English language proficiency, were the focus of this study. Upon conclusion of the study, English learners born in the United States and with higher language proficiency levels had the highest comprehension scores. The group read Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet while the teacher used targeted instruction to construct cultural schema needed to comprehend the text. All groups improved their comprehension with the introduction of targeted instruction of cultural schema. However, the only statistical significance was found in the analysis of language proficiency and reading comprehension. These findings suggested that English learners' reading comprehension is affected by language proficiency, but further research is needed to understand the connection between cultural schema and reading comprehension.

Book Theoretical Models and Processes of Literacy

Download or read book Theoretical Models and Processes of Literacy written by Donna E. Alvermann and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-03 with total page 893 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Seventh Edition of this foundational text represents the most comprehensive source available for connecting multiple and diverse theories to literacy research, broadly defined, and features both cutting-edge and classic contributions from top scholars. Two decades into the 21st century, the Seventh Edition finds itself at a crossroads and differs from its predecessors in three major ways: the more encompassing term literacy replaces reading in the title to reflect sweeping changes in how readers and writers communicate in a digital era; the focus is on conceptual essays rather than a mix of essays and research reports in earlier volumes; and most notably, contemporary literacy models and processes enhance and extend earlier theories of reading and writing. Providing a tapestry of models and theories that have informed literacy research and instruction over the years, this volume’s strong historical grounding serves as a springboard from which new perspectives are presented. The chapters in this volume have been selected to inspire the interrogation of literacy theory and to foster its further evolution. This edition is a landmark volume in which dynamic, dialogic, and generative relations of power speak directly to the present generation of literacy theorists and researchers without losing the historical contexts that preceded them. Some additional archival essays from previous editions are available on the book’s eResource. New to the Seventh Edition: Features chapters on emerging and contemporary theories that connect directly to issues of power and contrasts new models against more established counterparts. New chapters reflect sweeping changes in how readers and writers communicate in a digital era. Slimmer volume is complemented by some chapters from previous editions available online.

Book Reading Comprehension Research and Testing in the U S

Download or read book Reading Comprehension Research and Testing in the U S written by Arlette Ingram Willis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-09-10 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book challenges traditional, sanctioned, and official histories of reading comprehension by examining how ideological and cultural hegemony work to reproduce dominant ideologies through education in general and reading comprehension research and testing specifically. Willis analyzes the ideological and cultural foundations that underpin concepts, theories, research, tests, and interpretations, and connects these to the broader social and political contexts within U.S. history in which reading comprehension research and testing have evolved. The reconstruction of a history of reading comprehension research and testing in this way demystifies past and current assumptions about the interconnections among researchers, reading comprehension research, and standardized reading comprehension tests. A promising vision of the future of reading comprehension research and testing emerges–one that is more complex, multidimensional, inclusive, and socially just. Reading Comprehension Research and Testing in the U.S. aims to revolutionize how reading comprehension is conceived, theorized, tested, and interpreted for all children. This is a critically relevant volume for educational researchers, teacher educators, school administrators, teachers, policy makers, and all those concerned with school literacy and educational equity.

Book Cognition and Culture

Download or read book Cognition and Culture written by J. Altarriba and published by North Holland. This book was released on 1993-11-03 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the main source of knowledge of human cognition has come from studies of information processing in a single culture, primarily within the U.S. or within certain countries in Europe, much research has also been conducted in other parts of the world. Can the study of cognition across cultures lead us to interesting conclusions about human cognition in general? Surely any general theory of language processing, for example, must be able to explain phenomena observed across cultures and not just within a single one. This book is an attempt to look at this issue of universals in thinking and understanding by providing a compendium of cross cultural investigations in the four major areas of cognitive psychology: (1) memory and knowledge representation, (2) language processing, (3) perception, and (4) reasoning and problem solving. The differences found across cultures are also fascinating and extremely informative. A final chapter provides a summary of the major findings reported in each of these areas. The chapters included in this work were written for those interested in cross-cultural psychology and also those with an interest in cultural anthropology. The authors are well-known in the areas of cross-cultural psychology, cognitive psychology, linguistics, and anthropology. However, the reader need not be an expert in any one of these fields to understand the conclusions and implications of the work reported here.
