Download or read book Cultural Resources Survey of Mile 306 3 to 293 4 R on the Mississippi River Concordia Pointe Coupee and West Feliciana Parishes Louisiana written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The project area is divided into three segments: Above Old River, Carr Point, and Hog Point. Historical artifacts and architectural debris were found on the slope of the eroding top bank in the Carr Point segment and the Hog Point segment. These sites were designated the Carr Point House Site (16PC23), and the Hog Point House Site (16PC24). Analysis of the material from both sites indicated the remains of two residential structures whose occupations dated from the late nineteenth into the early twentieth century. Neither site was deemed worthy of consideration for the National Register of Historical Places. In addition to the historic sites found within the project area, two prehistoric sites were located in the general region. The Prairie Lake Mound (16CO28) turned out to be a site investigated by C.B. Moore in 1911, but never subsequently recorded. 16CO29 was a midden site revealed by recent construction activities at the Sidney A. Murray Hydroelectric Plant near the Old River Control Structure. Artifacts from this site point to a Late Marksville and Troyville period occupation. Carr point, Geomorphology, Historic sites, Hog Point, Mississippi River, Old River, Pointe Coupee Parish, Prehistoric sites, Raccourci cutoff, Shreve cutoff, Red River, Smithfield.

This book was released on 1990 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: R. Christopher Goodwin & Associates, Inc. conducted an intensive archeological survey and assessment of the proposed Vacherie Revetment easement along .3 miles of the Mississippi River in St. James Parish, Louisiana. Historic and archival research concentrating on the economic developments affecting the proposed construction item are discussed. Historic maps show bankline changes and prior construction within the survey area. Survey located Site 16 SJ 52, the remnants of the c. 1959 Maxime Rodrigue boatyard and ways. Artifacts include a single-drum chain-driven winch associated with the operation of boatways. Most of the boatyard equipment, including the boatways, are missing from the site, and portions of the site are graded. Based on the recency of the site and its lack of integrity, the site was assessed to be not significant. Keywords: Acadian Coast, Antebellum, Armant Plantation, Boatway, Cradle, Dog, German Coast, Historic archeology, Louisiana, Mississippi River. (sdw).

This book was released on 2001 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the results of a Phase I Archeological Remote Sensing Survey of the Vermilion River in Lafayette and Vermilion parishes, louisiana. These investigations were conducted from November 1 - 9, 2000, by R. Christopher Goodwin & Associates, Inc., on behalf of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District (USACE-NOD), in support of the proposed maintenance dredging of approximately 17.3 miles of the Vermilion River. This study was undertaken to assist the USACE-NOD to satisfy its responsibilities under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended, prior to the disposal of dredged material at this location. All aspects of the investigations were completed in compliance with the Scope-of-Work and with the Secretary of the Interior's Standards and Guidelines for Archeology and Historic Preservation (Federal Register 48, No 190, 1983). The study area for this project consisted of nine survey blocks, each measuring approximately two miles long and consisting of 1 to 3 adjacent lines, depending on the width and depth of the river and the amount of encumbering debris. The survey area measured a total of 92,400 ft in length, with an average width of 132 ft and encompassed approximately 281.3 acres. The objectives of this study were to identity specific targets that might represent significant submerged cultural resources, modem debris, pipelines, cables, or related items within the project area, and to provide the USACE-NOD with management recommendations for any cultural resources present. These objectives were met applying a research design that combined background archival investigations and a riverine archeological remote sensing survey. Background archival investigations indicated a low potential for encountering submerged historic cultural resources within the project area. A review of louisiana archeological site files and relevant research reports documented no sites within the survey area.
