Book Cultural Resources Survey and Testing for Davis Pond Freshwater Diversion St Charles Parish Louisiana

Download or read book Cultural Resources Survey and Testing for Davis Pond Freshwater Diversion St Charles Parish Louisiana written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pump Canal site (16SC27) is located within the western portion of Lake Cataouatche. The site was included in the investigations of the Davis Pond Freshwater Diversion Project. The actual site location is not shown on any maps in this report in order to avoid facilitating illegal northern bank of the Pump Canal, and east-west channel excavated during the second decade of the twentieth century to drain marshland west of Lake Cataouatche. Material from the canal was placed on top of the in situ archeological deposits at the site. The first documented activity at the site began in 1911 when a group of investors from Holland started the Winter Garden Experimental Farm. Maps and Photographs of the area once occupied by the farm show clearly the square layout of the village and fields that were drained but are now completely flooded by Lake Cataouatche. The farms was located on the west shore of Lake Netherlands in recognition of the newly arrived Dutch farmers promotional literature provided glowing descriptions of the area and of the farming experiment in an attempt to recruit farmers, investors, and businessmen. The demise of the farming experiment was hastened by flooding and hurricanes, culminating in a rather severe storm in 1914. The farm was not a successful venture. In less than three years, the Winter Garden Experimental Farm was defunct. A potential cause of the farm's demise may have been the difficulty of keeping the land dry. The pumps seemingly could not keep the lake waters from seeping into the farmland.

Book Archaeology of Louisiana

Download or read book Archaeology of Louisiana written by Mark A. Rees and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2010-11-30 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archaeology of Louisiana provides a groundbreaking and up-to-date overview of archaeology in the Bayou State, including a thorough analysis of the cultures, communities, and people of Louisiana from the Native Americans of 13,000 years ago to the modern historical archaeology of New Orleans. With eighteen chapters and twenty-seven distinguished contributors, Archaeology of Louisiana brings together the studies of some of the most respected archaeologists currently working in the state, collecting in a single volume a range of methods and theories to offer a comprehensive understanding of the latest archaeological findings. In the past two decades alone, much new data has transformed our knowledge of Louisiana's history. This collection, accordingly, presents fresh perspectives based on current information, such as the discovery that Native Americans in Louisiana constructed some of the earliest-known monumental architecture in the world—extensive earthen mounds—during the Middle Archaic period (6000–2000 B.C.) Other contributors consider a variety of subjects, such as the development of complex societies without agriculture, underwater archaeology, the partnering of archaeologists with the Caddo Nation and descendant communities, and recent research in historical archaeology and cultural resource management that promises to transform our current appreciation of colonial Spanish, French, Creole, and African American experiences in the Lower Mississippi Valley. Accessible and engaging, Archaeology of Louisiana provides a complete and current archaeological reference to the state's unique heritage and history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First major work to deal solely with the Plaquemine societies. Plaquemine, Louisiana, about 10 miles south of Baton Rouge on the banks of the Mississippi River, seems an unassuming southern community for which to designate an entire culture. Archaeological research conducted in the region between 1938 and 1941, however, revealed distinctive cultural materials that provided the basis for distinguishing a unique cultural manifestation in the Lower Mississippi Valley. Plaquemine was first cited in the archaeological literature by James Ford and Gordon Willey in their 1941 synthesis of eastern U.S. prehistory. Lower Valley researchers have subsequently grappled with where to place this culture in the local chronology based on its ceramics, earthen mounds, and habitations. Plaquemine cultural materials share some characteristics with other local cultures but differ significantly from Coles Creek and Mississippian cultures of the Southeast. Plaquemine has consequently received the dubious distinction of being defined by the characteristics it lacks, rather than by those it possesses. The current volume brings together eleven leading scholars devoted to shedding new light on Plaquemine and providing a clearer understanding of its relationship to other Native American cultures. The authors provide a thorough yet focused review of previous research, recent revelations, and directions for future research. They present pertinent new data on cultural variability and connections in the Lower Mississippi Valley and interpret the implications for similar cultures and cultural relationships. This volume finally places Plaquemine on the map, incontrovertibly demonstrating the accomplishments and importance of Plaquemine peoples in the long history of native North America.

Book Transforming New Orleans and Its Environs

Download or read book Transforming New Orleans and Its Environs written by Craig Colten and published by University of Pittsburgh Pre. This book was released on 2011-12-09 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human settlement of the Lower Mississippi River Valley—especially in New Orleans, the region’s largest metropolis—has produced profound and dramatic environmental change. From prehistoric midden building to late-twentieth century industrial pollution, Transforming New Orleans and Its Environs traces through history the impact of human activity upon the environment of this fascinating and unpredictable region. In eleven essays, scholars across disciplines––including anthropology, architecture, history, natural history, and geography––chronicle how societies have worked to transform untamed wetlands and volatile floodplains into a present-day sprawling urban center and industrial complex, and how they have responded to the environmental changes brought about by the disruption of the natural setting. This new text follows the trials of native and colonial settlers as they struggled to shape the environment to fit the needs of urbanization. It demonstrates how the Mississippi River, while providing great avenues for commerce, transportation, and colonization also presented the region’s greatest threat to urban centers, and details how engineers set about taming the mighty river. Also featured is an analysis of the impact of modern New Orleans upon the surrounding rural parishes and the effect urban pollution has had on the city’s water supply and aquatic life.

Book Advances in Historical Ecology

Download or read book Advances in Historical Ecology written by William L. Balée and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2012-09-18 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecology is an attempt to understand the reciprocal relationship between living and nonliving elements of the earth. For years, however, the discipline either neglected the human element entirely or presumed its effect on natural ecosystems to be invariably negative. Among social scientists, notably in geography and anthropology, efforts to address this human-environment interaction have been criticized as deterministic and mechanistic. Bridging the divide between social and natural sciences, the contributors to this book use a more holistic perspective to explore the relationships between humans and their environment. Exploring short- and long-term local and global change, eighteen specialists in anthropology, geography, history, ethnobiology, and related disciplines present new perspectives on historical ecology. A broad theoretical background on the material factors central to the field is presented, such as anthropogenic fire, soils, and pathogens. A series of regional applications of this knowledge base investigates landscape transformations over time in South America, the Mississippi Delta, the Great Basin, Thailand, and India. The contributors focus on traditional societies where lands are most at risk from the incursions of complex, state-level societies. This book lays the groundwork for a more meaningful understanding of humankind's interaction with its biosphere. Scholars and environmental policymakers alike will appreciate this new critical vocabulary for grasping biocultural phenomena.
