Book excerpt: A cultural resources inventory of selected portions of the Eau Galle Recreational Area was conducted in an effort to relocate and assess the condition of eight previously reported archaeological sites, and to survey surrounding areas. Five of the eight sites were positively relocated. Two of these were outside the Corps of Engineers managed property, and two others were found to be affected by ongoing erosion. Three previously unreported sites, one prehistoric and two historic, also were discovered. Recommendations for additional work at seven of these sites are provided.

Book excerpt: Phase II investigations were undertaken at the Eau Galle Recreation Area in St. Croix county, Wisconsin. Of six prehistoric sites tested, five were found to be extensively disturbed from pre-reservoir cultivation activities. The sixth site (Lamb-5; Sc25) had previously been documented as having in situ late Archaic remains. The 1985 testing at the latter site demonstrated that the in situ cultural deposits remain above the water table, and are in good condition for research. Given the uniqueness of Lamb-5 at the Eau Galle locality and for west-central Wisconsin, the site is recommended for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. Book excerpt: The investigation consisted of a literature search and records review, and a Phase I on-the-ground reconnaissance survey. The literature search and records review was an extensive review of the documents which contain information on known cultural resources in the Study Area. A Phase I reconnaissance level survey was conducted on all Corps-owned land except those areas previously disturbed, approximately 250 acres, and 60 acres of land located in Section 6 T27N R15W below the spillway. The field work was accomplished employing visual, surface, and subsurface testing techniques as determined appropriate by the investigating archaelogist. The investigators found no new prehistoric or photo-historic sites. Three standing structure sites were located on non-Corps-owned property below the spillway. No further research and no mitigative measures are recommended on these sites at this time.

Book excerpt: An archaeological survey was conducted for the St. Paul District, Corps of Engineers in two areas south of La Crosse, Wisconsin. The first area surveyed were two small borrow areas on Goose Island. The other region consisted of 71 acres adjacent to the transmitter building of radio station WKTY. A variety of techniques including interviews, shovel testing, soil cores, and pedestrian survey were utilized. No prehistoric and only recent historic remains were observed in these areas. Therefore, it is concluded that any future construction activities or disturbance of either area will not adversely affect either prehistoric or historic cultural resources.

Book excerpt: In the fall of 1981, a cultural resources investigation was conducted of BlackHawk Park in southwestern Wisconsin for the St. Paul District of the Army Corps of Engineers. An intensive archaeological reconnaissance and an extensive literature search were designed to determine if cultural resources are present in the park. Although the literature search indicated numerous known archaeological sites in the vicinity of Blackhawk Park, neither historic nor prehistoric cultural remains were recorded, observed or recovered in the park during the course of the survey. The major historical event of the area, the Battle of the Bad Axe, may have been partially fought within the park, but any remains of this skirmish probably also have been obscured by flooding. It is concluded that any construction or filling within the park will not affect cultural resources. Originator-supplied keywords include: Ojibiway Indians, and Sioux Indians.
