Book China and Russia

Download or read book China and Russia written by Alexander Lukin and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2018-03-16 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With many predicting the end of US hegemony, Russia and China's growing cooperation in a number of key strategic areas looks set to have a major impact on global power dynamics. But what lies behind this Sino-Russian rapprochement? Is it simply the result of deteriorated Russo–US and Sino–US relations or does it date back to a more fundamental alignment of interests after the Cold War? In this book Alexander Lukin answers these questions, offering a deeply informed and nuanced assessment of Russia and China’s ever-closer ties. Tracing the evolution of this partnership from the 1990s to the present day, he shows how economic and geopolitical interests drove the two countries together in spite of political and cultural differences. Key areas of cooperation and possible conflict are explored, from bilateral trade and investment to immigration and security. Ultimately, Lukin argues that China and Russia’s strategic partnership is part of a growing system of cooperation in the non-Western world, which has also seen the emergence of a new political community: Greater Eurasia. His vision of the new China–Russia rapprochement will be essential reading for anyone interested in understanding this evolving partnership and the way in which it is altering the contemporary geopolitical landscape.

Book Asian European Perspectives

Download or read book Asian European Perspectives written by Wim Stokhof and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-19 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) is an interregional forum for political dialogue, education and culture, security and business, aimed at enhancing relations between Asia and Europe to achieve a better interregional balance in the spheres of politics, economics and culture. Its members are the seven ASEAN countries and the 15 EU countries. This book addresses three questions of central importance to the ASEM process and to the involvement of the private sector: What role can Europe and Asia play in managing an integrated global economy? What will be the role of the private sector in boosting the ASEM process? And how can the full potential of ASEM be realised? The contributors to the volume are Asian and European academics, politicians and businessmen who have been involved in the process from the very beginning.

Book Europe Asia Interregional Relations

Download or read book Europe Asia Interregional Relations written by Bart Gaens and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-29 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the interregional relations of the European Union with East Asia through the prism of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM). ASEM currently brings together 16 Asian countries, the 27 member states of the European Union, as well as the ASEAN Secretariat and the European Commission. ASEM's ten-year anniversary and the Sixth Summit in Helsinki prompted reflection on the forum's accomplishments in three dimensions of interaction, its working methods, democratic involvement, public awareness and global strategic potential. The volume provides an in-depth evaluation of ASEM's first decade from a European perspective, including the achievements of the ASEM6 Summit and its implications for the future of the process. It also analyzes the role of interregional interaction as a tool for EU foreign policy.

Book Transnational Flows and Permissive Polities

Download or read book Transnational Flows and Permissive Polities written by Barak Kalir and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of ethnographies of transnational migration and border crossings in Asia. Interdisciplinary in scope, it addresses issues of mobility and Diaspora from various vantage points. Unique to this volume is an emphasis of studying globalisation from below, privileging the narratives and views of “people on the move” – or the transnational underclass – and their sense of belonging to places and communities. The collection is further distinguished by its focus on the sources of authority and the social configurations that are created in the intersections between legality and illegality across Asia. Though previous studies on transnational flows have deconstructed the notion of nation-states as having fixed political boundaries, and have engaged in spaces beyond the nation-states, seldom has an entire region, Asia, been privileged in one integrated volume. We emphasize hitherto marginalized debates that have significant policy relevance. Other than a serious academic interest from lecturers and students, we are confident that book will be of significant interest for development practitioners and NGOs.
