People have the possibility to travel across continents, meetings are organised all around the world. Therefore the knowledge of at least one foreign language is definitely an essential skill one should have. But nevertheless just translating a word or a sentence from one language into another does not guarantee a successful course of negotiation. According to Mattock (2003) the actual talk is just the tip of the iceberg. Instead the major and thus bottom layer is culture. (Mattock, 2003) Therefore international managers should be aware that transcultural competence can only be achieved by ‘being aware of cultural differences, respecting them and ultimately reconciling them’ (Trompenaars and Hampden-Turner, 1997). The first part of this essay will present general information about Slovenia and Germany. It will then highlight the major characteristics and differences between the business cultures of the two countries concentrating on the dimensions introduced by Trompenaars and Hofstede. (For definitions of culture and the dimensions see Appendix) The conclusion will highlight the major differences between the two business cultures and offer recommendations for German and Slovenian managers doing business with each other.

Although one would assume quite various similarities between these countries due to geographical proximity and same origin of language, they are indeed quite different – an issue also investigated by Eoro Vaara. The aim of this paper is to show that even slight or subtle differences in cultural patterns should be considered. Therefore only who can communicate without cultural misunderstandings can experience successful cross-cultural negotiations. Sweden has been chosen since there is a lot of research about cultural differences between American, Asian and Arab countries, but hardly any regarding inter-European. Another reason is also because of personal experiences in Sweden and with Swedish friends. It was challenging to investigate in a country, which does not seem to be culturally much apart from Germany. After a short introduction, the second chapter gives the reader a definition for culture and an overview of Hofstede’s model of dimensions. This chapter also presents the different kind of cultures from a German and Swedish perspective. Therefore the third chapter deals with negotiations between Germans and Swedes while doing business. This paper ends with the chapter “conclusion”.

International Mergers and acquisitions are en vogue today. The advantages quoted by managers include advantages of scale, increased shareholder value, access to new markets, lower overheads and so on. The number of international mergers and acquisitions between German and American companies increased a lot during the last years, as well. At the beginning there are high hopes and elation connected with the deal. But the long-term reality, however, is much the opposite. At least 50 percent of all international mergers and acquisition activity fails, no matter how the success is measured. There are also lots of companies who failed, who are therefore not able to benefit from some positive synergy effects like cost reductions. Why did that happen? A survey tried to analyze the reasons for this. The surprising result was that just 30% of the failures were attributed to the "hard factors" of business, like planning, finance or technology. For the rest, the reason lay in the so-called "soft factors", which contain cultural and organizational behaviour. Somewhat less acknowledged, although hardly disputed, is the positive and negative impact of cultural aspects on the success of M&A activity. Through multinational companies, globally accepted management styles or organisational structures the impression might be given that there are hardly big differences in the way people do business all over the world. However, the variety of human cultures makes it impossible to believe that there is a uniform theory corresponding to all cultures on earth or assimilating their way of doing business. Misunderstandings while doing business or even failure of business relationships are, despite ever increasing market transparency, part of every day business life. It is less frequently the consequence of economic discrepancies but more often hidden cultural incompatibilities that can cause problems between two or more parties. Even between countries that have maintained business relationships for many years, as is the case between Germany and Spain, the problem of cultural differences is unfortunately present and moreover underestimated. For Germany, the European export champion, Spain has been for at least a decade one of the top export destinations. Also German companies located in Spain contributed 8% to that country s G.D.P. for 2010. Those big subsidiaries originated from a successful attempt to do business with a different culture and yet, to a greater or lesser extent, still face this difficulty every day. This applies equally to enterprises that are pure exporters, those having production plants, distribution or sales departments in the respective country. Helping businesses avoid the potential obstacles arising from cultural differences through sensitivity and understanding would improve working relationships and smoothen the path toward economic growth. Hit hard by the European economic crisis, Spain had and still has to suffer economic cutbacks. Since Germany is the second largest destination for Spanish exports it needs to maintain this presence in Germany. As the head of Spanish government José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero and the German chancellor Angela Merkel pointed out on the German-Hispanic summit conference on 2nd of February 2011 in Madrid, there is still a lot of potential that can be exploited when both parties are pro-active. Not only globally, but also on a European level, we have experienced the urge of companies to expand their business operations into different parts of the EU with the result of settling on the targeted ground where they try to expand their market share. For this reason companies encounter more and more cultural diversity within their own borders. Therefore an effective cross-cultural-management becomes essential in order to work efficiently and build a strong union with the “foreign” branches. Throughout numerous vacations abroad, I have experienced cultural differences between nationalities. Having stayed in the U.S.A. with a host family I have started to investigate these diversities where they have their roots and how to deal with them effectively. Having worked on an internship program for a German company in the U.K. I have experienced what the specific problems were when the two national cultures clashed. Even having a “corporate culture” could not prevent the faut pas being made for example during meetings. These faux pas were triggered by cultural diversity. The complexity of this topic is immediately clear, if only from the number of definitions for the word „culture“, and from the number of theories trying to explain the problem. I have chosen to lay my focus on the work of three major theorists on the topic that best fit my experiences. In this paper I will therefore introduce the theorist’s works and their view of culture to the reader and then apply the results to several situations one will encounter while doing business in either one of the countries. Already several theorists have explored cross-cultural issues affecting the business environment. One theorist will always be outlined when talking about cross-culture: Geert Hofstede, but also will I briefly describe the work of Fons Trompenaars and Hampden-Turner.

Adler, International Dimensions of Organizational Behaviour, p.54; 2008) There are many aspects to look at, if you compare the German and the Russian culture. I used the cultural dimensions developed by Geert Hofstede and chose three dimensions, which I think are most relevant in this context, to point out cultural differences between Germans and Russians. This paper will first look at the differences in power distance of both countries. Then it goes on with the effects of the different scores in masculinity. The third dimension covered in this paper is uncertainty avoidance. It is to mention that Hofstede has not published any large-scale empirical studies for Russia, but he provided estimates.

This understanding is “for instance, a prerequisite to the effective entry into new markets and new countries, whether by establishing licenses, setting up new subsidiaries, merger, takeover, or setting up co-operative or joint-ventures.” Goal of this paper is to show Trompenaars ́ model of culture, explain the dimension universal-ism versus particularism and work out differences and similarities between two cultures, the German and the U.S.-American culture, referring to the chosen dimension. First of all, Trompenaars ́ model of culture is shown and explained roughly. Afterwards the author is enumerating the seven dimensions. One chosen dimension will be worked out in detail, to use it for a comparison then. In the comparison the author shows different surveys and results to validate the cultural dimension and the corresponding assumptions. The paper ends with summarizing the critical remarks towards Trompenaars ́ work, cultural theories in general and a short opinion from the author himself.

Awareness and knowledge of a leader’s strengths is essential in leading subordinates. To analyse the differences between leadership in the case of Greece and Germany the following questions must be addressed: What are the cultural differences between Greece and Germany? What is typical Greek and what is typical German regarding leadership? What are the big distinctions between these two forms? And is there anything that can be learned from one another? This analysis is primarily concerned with these questions. To say that leadership varies from one country to another (Deresky, 2000) and “knowing what your personal leadership style is, the strengths and weaknesses of your preferred style, and how to deal with others whose styles may differ considerably from yours is essential to developing and sustaining successful leadership positions” (Hummel, 2007, p.25).
