Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rambutan, Nephelium lappaceum L., is a popular fruit of Southeast Asia still practically unknown in the Western Hemisphere. A medium-size tree with an open structure, the rambutan produces panicles of small flowers followed by clusters of ellipsoidal fruits up to 10 cm in length. The fruits are covered by a thick skin bearing flexible protuberances. The skin is easily peeled away, revealing a whitish pulp around a central seed. The pulp is sweet to subacid, translucent, attractive, and suitable for processing. The rambutan is strictly tropical in growth requirements and needs high humidity and a long rainy season. Cultural techniques are discussed. A problem of iron deficiency, which causes chlorosis, makes establishment of seedling difficult. Improved varieties propagated by grafting are available. The rambutan would be a suitable and popular fruit for Puerto Rico and other parts of the American Tropics.

This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cultivation of Neglected Tropical Fruits With Promise, Vol. 2: The Mamey Sapote In many countries of South America, the es teem in which the mamey sapote is held is shown by the habit of leaving these trees undisturbed when deforesting a new piece of land. The old trees found in the forest today are often signs of places that were previously inhabited. Now, with impetus from new crops and with new tech niques for planting, this practice of conserving these trees is disappearing, and in some areas the fruit is difficult to obtain. Few countries have had the foresight to pre serve this important resource, but the Cubans feel that no other fruit can be compared With the mamey sapote. There is currently a great demand for this fruit in the continental United States and'in other places where Cubans have settled. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cultivation of Neglected Tropical Fruits With Promise, Vol. 5: The Canistel and Its Relatives The family Sapotaceae has traditionally been difficult to classify. Recent publications (4, 5, 8) list a variety of botanical binomials for the same members of this family. Vernacular names have acquired considerable importance, because they are the only means by which horticulturists understand which species people are talking about. Classification of the types that bear edible fruit has been at times arbitrary and erroneous because judgments were based on poor herbarium specimens, and occasionally because good bio systematic evidence of speciation was lacking. His name has come to be a common name for the pummelo. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. They have become so commonplace in the tropics and in certain regions of the temperate zone that they seem to be a part of the original landscape. Almost all species have found locales suited to their cultivation and a variety of uses. During their geographical march, the species have benn, hybridized, sometimes spontaneously and somentimes by means of man's guidance.
