Download or read book Diversified Agriculture of Hawai i written by Perry F. Philipp and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2021-05-25 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An economist’s view of Hawaii’s agriculture, its history, present status, and future prospects. The author presents a wealth of essential information on Island crops, and discusses significant agricultural trends in down-to-earth language for farmers, specialists, students, and the general public. Part One surveys the historical background of today’s economy and the development of various agricultural industries now commercially important in the Islands. Hawaii’s unique farm economy presents local problems which mainland methods cannot solve; expanding diversified agriculture is viewed by the author as an important way to strengthen the Island’s economic position. Part Two is a detailed discussion of each diversified agricultural industry; vegetables, flowers and foliage, fruits and macadamia nuts, coffee, livestock, poultry, beekeeping, and others. The author advocates advanced production methods and greater diversification to increase farm income and, at the same time, develop export crops.

The government has designed, and is implementing, strategies, policies, and plans to guide and manage the overall development of the country accordingly. Download or read book Trade Liberalisation and Poverty written by Minh Son Le and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-08-11 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book uses Alan Winters’ analytical framework to investigate the effects of trade liberalisation on economic growth and poverty in Vietnam. The country launched a programme of economic and trade reforms, known as Doi Moi, in the mid-1980s which placed the economy on a transitional path from central planning to a market economy. Since then Vietnam has attained a number of remarkable achievements in terms of economic growth and poverty reduction. Although some formidable problems (such as inequality and inflation) remain, it is apparent that trade liberalisation has been associated with a big reduction in poverty. The analysis in the book focuses on the microeconomic (household) level, and there is an emphasis on tracing the effects of trade liberalisation through the four separate channels identified by Winters. Such in-depth and micro-level analyses yield new insights that support important policy lessons and recommendations for Vietnam in particular and, more generally, for similar developing countries.
Download or read book The Report Papua New Guinea 2014 written by Oxford Business Group and published by Oxford Business Group. This book was released on 2014-09-04 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Papua New Guinea is poised for change, as the country’s mineral riches are providing a major opportunity for economic development through the exploitation of natural resources. The government’s five-year strategic plan focuses on key development enablers such as free education, improvements to health services, the strengthening of law and order, rural development projects and infrastructure construction. Inward investment has increasingly been driven by the extractive sector, including oil and gas, whose share of the country’s total investment stock rose from 71% to 87% between 2004 and 2012. Statistics from the Investment Promotion Authority reveal that the largest share of new foreign direct investment in 2013, some 24.6%, targeted the construction sector, outpacing that in financial services, manufacturing and mining, which accounted for 19.8%, 18.1% and 10.9%, respectively. While minerals and hydrocarbons dominate exports, around 85% of the country’s population is employed in the agriculture sector. The start of liquefied natural gas exports in 2014 is expected to return the current account to a surplus in 2015, forecast as high as 12.1% of GDP before returning to 9.1% the following year. While the outlook for state revenues remains strong in the medium term, ensuring the sustainability of further spending increases will be key to preserving macroeconomic stability.
