Book Viewing Photography in Post Dictatorship Latin America

Download or read book Viewing Photography in Post Dictatorship Latin America written by David Rojinsky and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-11-30 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the archival aesthetic of mourning and memory developed by Latin American artists and photographers between 1997-2016. Particular attention is paid to how photographs of the assassinated or disappeared political dissident of the 1970s and 1980s, as found in family albums and in official archives, were not only re-imagined as conduits for private mourning, but also became allegories of social trauma and the struggle against socio-political amnesia. Memorials, art installations, photo-essays, street projections, and documentary films are all considered as media for the reframing of these archival images from the era of the Cold War dictatorships in Argentina, Chile, Guatemala, and Uruguay. While the turn of the millennium was supposedly marked by “the end of history” and, with the advent of digital technologies, by “the end of photography,” these works served to interrupt and hence, belie the dominant narrative on both counts. Indeed, the book's overarching contention is that the viewer’s affective identification with distant suffering when engaging these artworks is equally interrupted: instead, the viewer is invited to apprehend memorial images as emblems of national and international histories of ideological struggle.

Book Contemporary Argentine Women Filmmakers

Download or read book Contemporary Argentine Women Filmmakers written by Mirna Vohnsen and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-07-06 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume offers a wide-ranging picture of Argentine women filmmakers’ contribution to the film industry from the 1980s to the present by bringing together the work of highly acclaimed and emerging directors. Through thirteen critical essays by leading scholars in the field of Argentine cinema, the book acknowledges that contemporary women filmmakers have transformed the cinema of Argentina by questioning, challenging and debunking hegemonic patriarchal systems of representation. With a focus on women’s voices and experiences, the contributions redress both the under-representation of women and girls onscreen and the perpetuation of stereotypes, while exploring the innovative aesthetics used by these filmmakers.

Book Transnational Borderlands in Women s Global Networks

Download or read book Transnational Borderlands in Women s Global Networks written by M. Sierra and published by Springer. This book was released on 2011-06-06 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transnational Borderlands: The Making of Cultural Resistance in Women's Global Networks investigates the implications of transnational feminist methodologies at multiple levels: collective actions, theory, pedagogy, discursive, and visual productions. It addresses a substantial gap in the field of transnational feminisms; namely, the absence of a voice that links social and theoretical outcomes to the politics of representation in literature, visual art, discourses of rights and citizenships, and pedagogy. The book encompasses three categories of relevance to contemporary transnational methodologies: the politics of cultural representation in literature and visual art, the de-centering of human/women's rights, and pedagogies of crossing and dissent. Given current interest in the cultures of globalization and the role women and other minorities play in them, we expect this book will appeal to scholars in the fields of Women's and Gender Studies, Borderlands Studies, Transnational Studies, and to anyone interested in how transnational processes shape a culture of resistance in women's global networks.

This book was released on 2017-03-28 with total page 523 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fully updated and revised, this is the bestselling comprehensive bilingual identification guide to Mexico’s diverse mammalian fauna. Fully updated and revised, this bestselling book follows a bilingual arrangement, with identical information presented in Spanish and English on facing pages. The dichotomous presentation is both easy to follow and flawlessly compiled, including updated and expanded material that surpasses any previously available resource. Hundreds of diagnostic images are dispersed throughout the book, many showing minute details that differentiate one species from another, and introductory materials carefully explain the use of diagnostic features. The heart of the book, though, is the keys themselves, which cover every taxa—from artiodactyls and carnivores to primates and rodents—while allowing confident identification at the species level for both field and museum use. The book closes with appendices that cover preparation of specimens, a glossary, and a bibliography. Anyone with an interest in the mammalian fauna of Mexico, or mammals in general, will find this one-of-a-kind book an indispensable reference to Mexico’s rich diversity of wildlife.

Book excerpt: “Before getting my diagnosis, I walked through life without purpose, without a reason to be. What happened in my life needed to happen, I needed to live it. I needed to pass through these painful experiences to be the woman that I am today, a better version of myself.” Adamari López, the internationally known actress, had everything—a loving family, a perfect boyfriend, and a leading role on a successful telanovela in Mexico—when three words changed her life forever: you have cancer. Suddenly, in only a few months, the world that she knew collapsed and her life was turned upside-down. In Thriving, the normally private López reveals the triumphs and trials of her life, sharing anecdotes of her childhood and her family while describing her journey through breast cancer; the sudden illness of her mother; her wedding, one of the happiest days of her life; and, later, what she considers to be the hardest blow of all: the dissolution of her marriage. However, through it all, her strength and her faith never failed, and her loving and positive spirit, along with her perpetual smile, helped her to discover a new and rewarding start in love and in life.
