Este Simposio pretendía, ya desde su diseño por parte del Comité Científico, un nuevo planteamiento de orientaciones críticas y metodológicas en el ámbito de la educación y de la investigación en torno a la literatura que leen los niños y los jóvenes de hoy en día en el contexto de la sociedad tecnológica moderna. Representations of China in Latin American Literature (1987-2016) analyses contemporary Latin American novels in which China is the main theme. Using ‘China’ as a multidimensional term, it explores how the novels both highlight and undermine assumptions about China that have shaped Latin America’s understanding of ‘China’ and shows ‘China’ to be a kind of literary/imaginary ‘third’ term which reframes Latin American discourses of alterity. On one level, it argues that these texts play with the way that ‘China’ stands in as a wandering signifier and as a metonym for Asia, a gesture that essentialises it as an unchanging other. On another level, it argues that the novels’ employment of ‘China’ resists essentialist constructions of identity. ‘China’ is thus shown to be serving as a concept which allows for criticism of the construction of fetishized otherness and of the exclusion inherent in essentialist discourses of identity. The book presents and analyses the depiction of an imaginary of China which is arguably performative, but which discloses the tropes and themes which may be both established and subverted, in the novels. Chapter One examines the way in which ‘China’ is represented and constructed in Latin American novels where this country is a setting for their stories. The novels studied in Chapter Two are linked to the presence of Chinese communities in Latin America. The final chapter examines novels whose main theme is travel to contemporary China. Ultimately, in the novels studied in this book ‘China’ serves as a concept through which essentialist notions of identity are critiqued.

Intihuatana es una misteriosa escultura irregular, localizada a un extremo del Templo de las Tres Ventanas, un obervatorio Inca de la Ciudad de Macchupicchu en Perú, considerada una de las maravillas del mundo. Cuenta la Leyenda Inca, que Intihuatana era utilizado para amarrar al Sol, en un esfuerzo por evitar que se fuera, o quizá sólo para alargar el día y estirar las horas de luz. El Sol era considerado el Padre y Dios de los Incas e Intihuatana era una roca labrada ubicada en casi todas las cudades incas. Con la llegada de los españoles al Perú todas las Intihuatanas fueron destruidas permaneciendo en el tiempo solo la que existe hoy en Macchupicchu. María Belén (Maribé) escucha últimamente indefi nibles sonidos en el sótano de su casa donde por años nadie ha descendido. Su prima Mercedes, de sensibilidad especial viene para acompañarla a bajar al sótano y descubrir la procedencia de ellos. Caminando entre piezas antiguas encuentran un antiguo baúl cerrado. Después de algunos intentos logran abrirlo. Entre extrañas curiosidades encuentran unas escrituras. Quién y de qué trata todo ello? Descubren que la escritora se llama Tess. La reconocen como su antepasada. La curiosidad las distrae del objetivo por el que están en el lugar. Se entretienen leyendo rápidamente, resumiendo páginas. Tess tiene muchas cosas expresadas en papel. Casi toda una vida. Se emocionan compartiendo sus letras y vivencias . Pero no están solas. Alguien más que se manifi esta de modo incomprensible. Poco a poco se dan cuenta que son prisioneras de la realidad de si mismas y desearán escapar y vivir una nueva vida. Lo lograrán?

Based on data obtained from Spanish dictionaries and databases of the past thousand years, it documents the evolution of the major compounding patterns of the language. It analyzes the structural, semantic, and orthographic features of each compound type, and also provides a description of its Latin antecedents, early attestations, and relative frequency and productivity over the centuries. The combination of qualitative and quantitative data shows that although most compound types have survived, they have undergone changes in word order and relative frequency. Moreover, the book shows that the evolution of compounding in Spanish may be accounted for by processes of language acquisition in children. This book, which includes all the data in chronological and alphabetical order, will be a valuable resource for morphologists, Romance linguists, and historical linguists more generally.

Often, resentment based on past grievances or shortcomings seems to emerge from the depths of individual and collective psyches over the course of such emotionally charged movements. This resentment, and the related philosophical concept of ressentiment, can have a profound impact on the course of history and on the role of leadership within societies. Expanding on the concept of ressentiment, this book addresses the importance of emotions in historical events. The author explores the conditions that foster the development of ressentiment, the role of leaders and followers, and the phases of the phenomenon as it encourages destructive behaviors such as murder and suicide. Often considered an incurable disease with destructive social and political repercussions, it is a core motive for acts of terrorism, revolutions, social upheavals and processes of toxic leadership.
