Book Structural Chemistry of Silicates

Download or read book Structural Chemistry of Silicates written by F. Liebau and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As natural minerals, silica and silicates constitute by far the largest part of the earth's crust and mantle. They are equally important as raw materials and as mass produced items. For this reason they have been the subject of scientific research by geoscientists as well as by applied scientists in cement, ceramic, glass, and other industries. Moreover, intensive fun damental research on silicates has been carried out for many years because silicates are, due to their enormous variability, ideally suited for the study of general chemical and crystallographic principles. Several excellent books on mineralogy and cement, ceramics, glass, etc. give brief, usually descriptive synopses of the structure of silicates, but do not contain detailed discussions of their structural chemistry. A number of monographs on special groups of silicates, such as the micas and clay min erals, amphiboles, feldspars, and zeolites have been published which con tain more crystal chemical information. However, no modern text has been published which is devoted to the structural chemistry of silicates as a whole. Within the last 2 decades experimental and theoretical methods have been so much improved to the extent that not only have a large number of silicate structures been accurately determined, but also a better under standing has been obtained of the correlation between the chemical composition of a silicate and its structure. Therefore, the time has been reached when a modern review of the structural chemistry of silicates has become necessary.

Book Silicate Crystal Chemistry

Download or read book Silicate Crystal Chemistry written by Dana T. Griffen and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1992 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text focuses on the principles of crystal chemistry and crystal structure as they apply to the major silicate groups. The text fulfills two principal needs by covering the systematics of the mineral groups that are of primary interest to mineralogists and petrologists, as well as the crystal chemical principles that govern the behavior of mineral groups. Students and teachers of graduate-level courses in mineralogy, petrology, and crystallography will find this an essential and useful volume.

Book Modern Perspectives in Inorganic Crystal Chemistry

Download or read book Modern Perspectives in Inorganic Crystal Chemistry written by Erwin Parthé and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of crystal structures has had an ever increasing impact on many fields of science such as physics, chemistry, biology, materials science, medicine, pharmacy, metallurgy, mineralogy and geology. Particularly, with the advent of direct methods of structure determination, the data on crystal structures are accumulating at an unbelievable pace and it becomes more and more difficult to oversee this wealth of data. A crude rationalization of the structures of organic compounds and the atom coordinations can be made with the well-known Kekule model, however, no such generally applicable model exists for the structures of inorganiC and particularly intermetallic compounds. There is a need to rationalize the inorganic crystal structures, to find better ways of describing them, of denoting the geometrical relationships between them, of elucidating the electronic factors and of explaining the bonding between the atoms with the aim of not only having a better understanding of the known structures, but also of predicting structural features of new compounds.

Book Crystallography and Crystal Chemistry of Materials with Layered Structures

Download or read book Crystallography and Crystal Chemistry of Materials with Layered Structures written by F.A. Lévy and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last ten years, the chemistry and physics of materials with layered structures became an intensively investigated field in the study of the solid state. Research into physical properties of these crystals and especially investigations of their physical anisotropy related to the structural anisotropy has led to remarkable and perplexing results. Most of the layered materials exist in several polytypic modifications and can include stacking faults. The crystal structures are therefore complex and it became apparent that there was a great need for a review of the crystallographic data of materials approximating two-dimensional solids. This second volume in the series 'Physics and Chemistry of Materials with Layered Structures' has been written by specialists of different classes of layered materials. Structural data are reviewed and the most important relations between the structure and the chemical and physical properties are emphasized. The first three contributions are devoted to the transition metal dichalcogenides whose physical properties have been investigated in detail. The crystallographic data and crystal growth conditions are presented in the first paper. The second paper constitutes an incisive review of the phase transformations and charge density waves which have been observed in the metallic dichalcogenides. In two contributions the layered structures of newer ternary compounds are de scribed and the connection between structure and non-stoichiometry is discussed.

Book An Introduction to Crystal Chemistry

Download or read book An Introduction to Crystal Chemistry written by R. C. Evans and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1966 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1964, as the second edition of a 1939 original, this well-known textbook presents the fundamental principles of crystal chemistry at a level that was suitable for undergraduate students of chemistry, physics, metallurgy, mineralogy and related subjects at the time of its publication. The first part deals with the general principles of crystal architecture in terms of predominant types of binding forces between the atoms themselves. There are chapters on atomic structure, and the ionic, covalent, metallic and van der Waals bonds. The second part contains a discussion of systematic crystal chemistry in which the physical and chemical properties of crystalline substances are related to their structures.

Book High Temperature and High Pressure Crystal Chemistry

Download or read book High Temperature and High Pressure Crystal Chemistry written by Robert M. Hazen and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-12-17 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 41 of Reviews in Mineralogy and Geochemistry introduces to the field of high-temperature and high-pressure crystal chemistry, both as a guide to the dramatically improved techniques and as a summary of the voluminous crystal chemical literature on minerals at high temperature and pressure. The three parts of the book introduces crystal chemical considerations of special relevance to non-ambient crystallographic studies, reviews the temperature- and pressure-variation of structures in major mineral groups and presents experimental techniques for high-temperature and high-pressure studies of single crystals and polycrystalline samples as well as special considerations relating to diffractometry on samples at non-ambient conditions.

Book Silicate Structures and dispersion system

Download or read book Silicate Structures and dispersion system written by Wilhelm Eitel and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 838 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silicate Science, Volume VI: Silicate Structures and Dispersoid Systems reviews the advances made in silicate research from 1960 through 1970, with emphasis on X-ray diffraction methods, their theory, and the refinements of special silicate structures, particularly of natural silicate minerals or of synthetic products. The Zolati systematics of silicate crystal structures are used in this treatise, along with the principle of a systematics after the "sharing coefficients." Comprised of three sections, this volume begins with an overview of the progress made in infrared and Raman spectroscopy as well as the Mössbauer nuclear paramagnetic resonance method. Advances in experimental techniques applicable to crystal structure problems and crystal chemistry are highlighted, together with research in isomorphism, isotypism, polymorphism, and the epitaxis phenomena. The next section deals with clay minerals and considers the refined physical-chemical methods used for their identification, chiefly by infrared spectroscopy. Structures, adsorption, and base exchange reactions of clay minerals with inorganic and organic compounds are analyzed. The final section is devoted to silica and silicate dispersoid systems and the many advances made in electron microscopy, especially in the Castaing electron microprobe method. This book will be of interest to mineralogists, chemists, and crystallographers.
