Book excerpt: The aim of this new book series (Diatoms: Biology and Applications) is to provide a comprehensive and reliable source of information on diatom biology and applications. The first book of the series, Diatoms Fundamentals & Applications, is wide ranging, starting with the contributions of amateurs and the beauty of diatoms, to details of how their shells are made, how they bend light to their advantage and ours, and major aspects of their biochemistry (photosynthesis and iron metabolism). The book then delves into the ecology of diatoms living in a wide range of habitats, and look at those few that can kill or harm us. The book concludes with a wide range of applications of diatoms, in forensics, manufacturing, medicine, biofuel and agriculture. The contributors are leading international experts on diatoms. This book is for a wide audience researchers, academics, students, and teachers of biology and related disciplines, written to both act as an introduction to diatoms and to present some of the most advanced research on them.

Book The Komarov Botanical Institute

Download or read book The Komarov Botanical Institute written by Stanwyn G. Shetler and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1700s Peter the Great established two botanical institutions in St. Petersberg, the city he dared to create a mere seven degrees south of the Arctic Circle. These were the predecessors of the present-day Komarov Botanical Institute, formed in 1931 by the merger of two previous institutions. This book tells the story of the Institute and its predecessors - a glimpse at two-and-a-half centuries of botanical research in Russia. The author describes the physical setting and intellectual climate of the Institute along with its vast resources: a staff of 700, two dozen major laboratories, a large greenhouse and outdoor garden complex, an arboretum-park, several experimental farms, a 450,000-volume library, and combined herbaria of nearly 6 million specimens, dating back to 1709. Among the many achievements of the Komarov, the author stresses the completion of the monumental 30-volume Flora of the USSR. Prepared over a 33-year period, the Flora covers 17,500 species of plants native to the Soviet Union. The author views this work as "the crowning achievement of Russian taxonomy if not of all Russian botany." The book closes with an outline of the Institute's ambitious plans for the future - including a vast effort in tropical research.

Book The Cereal Rusts

Download or read book The Cereal Rusts written by William Bushnell and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 567 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cereal Rusts, Volume I: Origins, Specificity, Structure, and Physiology presents the historical, evolutionary, taxonomic, structural, genetic, and physiological characteristics of cereal rust fungi and the diseases they cause in cereal crops. The cereal rusts are potentially serious disease threats to cereal crops and have caused widespread losses in wheat, oats, barley, and related crops. This three-part volume brings together in a single reference source the accumulated knowledge, complex, challenging science of cereal rusts. The first chapters of this 16-chapter volume cover the pioneering contributions of early scientists to the knowledge of cereal rusts, the evolution of cereal rusts, and the taxonomy of cereal rust fungi. The book also examines the specificity of cereal rusts including formae speciales, race specificity, pathogen-host genetics, histology and molecular biology of host parasite specificity, and the genetics of rust fungus populations as reflected by virulence frequency. The text further discusses the structure and physiology aspects; the germination of urediospores and differentiation of infection structures; and the infection under artificial conditions. The ultrastructure of hyphae and urediospores; the development and physiology of teliospores; and the obligate parasitism and axenic culture of rust fungi are also explained. This volume also encompasses the structure and physiology of haustoria; structural and physiological alterations in susceptible hosts; and effects of rust on plant development in relation to nutrient translocation. Cereal rust investigators, plant pathologists, agronomists, agriculturalists, research biochemists, cytologists, geneticists, physiologists, taxonomists, epidemiologists, and pathologists will find this book invaluable.
