Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The adventurous narrative of a youngster in the far north, on the other hand, became his favorite and one of his most often picks. Stables presents a comprehensive vision of the north, presenting a vivid and realistic description of life and work in the Arctic, as well as its people, natural history, and natural marvels, based on his actual experience in the Arctic. Survival in the harsh Arctic climate promotes a muscular approach to manhood and maturity in the young hero Stables, who becomes a great role model for his young audience. William Gordon Stables MD, CM. RN (1840-1910) was a Scottish-born Royal Navy medical doctor and prolific author of adventure fiction, mainly for boys. He wrote about 130 novels. His writings span a wide range of topics, all corners of the world, and give thrilling adventure stories that are frequently mixed with moral teaching and imperialistic connotations.

Book Islands in History and Representation

Download or read book Islands in History and Representation written by Rod Edmond and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-10-28 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative collection of essays explores the ways in which islands have been used, imagined and theorised, both by island dwellers and continentals. This study considers how island dwellers conceived of themselves and their relation to proximate mainlands, and examines the fascination that islands have long held in the European imagination. The collection addresses the significance of islands in the Atlantic economy of the eighteenth century, the exploration of the Pacific, the important role played by islands in the process of decolonisation, and island-oriented developments in postcolonial writing. Islands were often seen as natural colonies or settings for ideal communities but they were also used as dumping grounds for the unwanted, a practice which has continued into the twentieth century. The collection argues the need for an island-based theory within postcolonial studies and suggests how this might be constructed. Covering a historical span from the eighteenth to the twentieth century, the contributors include literary and postcolonial critics, historians and geographers.

Book The Vanished Settlers of Greenland

Download or read book The Vanished Settlers of Greenland written by Robert Rix and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-05-31 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For four hundred years, Norse settlers battled to make southern Greenland a new, sustainable home. They strove against gales and winter cold, food shortages and in the end a shifting climate. The remnants they left behind speak of their determination to wrest an existence at the foot of this vast, icy and challenging wilderness. Yet finally, seemingly suddenly, they vanished; and their mysterious disappearance in the fifteenth century has posed a riddle to scholars ever since. What happened to the lost Viking colonists? For centuries people assumed their descendants could still be living, so expeditions went to find them: to no avail. Robert Rix tells the gripping story of the missing pioneers, placing their poignant history in the context of cultural discourse and imperial politics. Ranging across fiction, poetry, navigation, reception and tales of exploration, he expertly delves into one of the most contested questions in the annals of colonization.
