Book Cruising in the Global Economy

Download or read book Cruising in the Global Economy written by Christine B.N. Chin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The business of cruise tourism in recent years has commanded news media attention especially on issues of environmental pollution, passenger safety and worker rights, yet consumer interest in cruise vacations has not been adversely affected by negative publicity and it continues to grow at an average of 8-9% per annum. This unique mode of business focusing on the production and consumption of pleasure at sea and on land offers us an unprecedented opportunity to analyze the manner in which ongoing economic restructuring processes to bring about free markets in goods, services and labour can and does involve both life on land and at sea. This interdisciplinary analysis elicits an examination of states' relationship to the maritime regulatory structure governing ship ownership, management and operations, cruise lines' business strategies, development of port communities to capture cruise-related revenue, changing leisure consumption patterns and meanings, and the employment of foreign migrant workers as seafarers.

Book The Quest for Profitable Growth in the Modern Cruise Industry

Download or read book The Quest for Profitable Growth in the Modern Cruise Industry written by Stefano Turconi and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2011-02 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2008 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, London Business School (London Business School / INSEAD), language: English, abstract: This report examines the subject of profitable growth in the modern cruise industry by comparing the financial and operating performance and the management practices of the two leading cruise operators, Carnival and Royal Caribbean, over the twelve-year period from 1996 to 2007. During the past 40 years the cruise industry has evolved from a form of mere transoceanic transportation to an alternative vacation at sea. Despite growing at a CAGR of 7.7% since 1980, the penetration rate for the cruise industry is only 17%. In North America alone the cruise industry generated $20.6 billion in 2006. By comparison, the lodging industry in North America generated revenues of $133.4 billion during the same year. The cruise industry remains a relatively young industry. This is proven by the fact that, of the 168 million passengers that have cruised globally since 1990, 72% cruised in the past ten years and 43% in the past five years alone. The cruise industry has continually expanded to meet or boost demand: 40 new ships were built in the 1980s, 80 new ships were built in the 1990s, and 46 new ships are scheduled to enter the global market within the next four years. Even though there are more than 30 brands of cruise lines, only two companies dominate this industry: Carnival Corp & Plc (CCL) and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (RCL). The cruise industry remains highly segmented by product-with a variety of brands targeting a wide array of price points, consumer needs, and itineraries-but by the end of 2007 Carnival and Royal Caribbean alone controlled about two-thirds of the global capacity, with shares of 45% and 21% respectively. Back in 1987, their estimated combined share of global capacity was only 11%. Up until 2000, Carnival and Royal Caribbean followed a

Book Cruise Tourism in the Caribbean

Download or read book Cruise Tourism in the Caribbean written by Martha Honey and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-06-17 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the lessons learned from half a century of Caribbean cruise tourism; one of the most popular and profitable sectors of the tourism industry. The modern-day cruise industry dates from the 1960s when the three major cruise lines, Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian, set up shop in Florida and began selling winter cruises to the Caribbean targeting American retirees. For geopolitical reasons, the US initially excluded cruises to Cuba. This changed in 2016, following the historic Obama-Castro agreement to move towards diplomatic, trade and travel normalization. Cuba quickly became the Caribbean’s fastest growing cruise destination. This book considers the limited economic benefits of cruise tourism, its environmental and social impacts, and the effects of climate change, and "overtourism." Based on this analysis and case studies of key Caribbean and Mediterranean destinations, this book cautions against overdependence on cruise tourism and outlines reforms needed to bring more benefits and equity to Caribbean countries. It will be valuable to professionals, businesses, development agencies, NGOs, and academics interested in a sustainable cruise industry and the economic well-being of Caribbean island nations.

Book Encyclopedia of Transportation

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Transportation written by Mark Garrett and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2014-08-13 with total page 2000 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Viewing transportation through the lens of current social, economic, and policy aspects, this four-volume reference work explores the topic of transportation across multiple disciplines within the social sciences and related areas, including geography, public policy, business, and economics. The book’s articles, all written by experts in the field, seek to answer such questions as: What has been the legacy, not just economically but politically and socially as well, of President Eisenhower’s modern interstate highway system in America? With that system and the infrastructure that supports it now in a state of decline and decay, what’s the best path for the future at a time of enormous fiscal constraints? Should California politicians plunge ahead with plans for a high-speed rail that every expert says—despite the allure—will go largely unused and will never pay back the massive investment while at this very moment potholes go unfilled all across the state? What path is best for emerging countries to keep pace with dramatic economic growth for their part? What are the social and financial costs of gridlock in our cities? Features: Approximately 675 signed articles authored by prominent scholars are arranged in A-to-Z fashion and conclude with Further Readings and cross references. A Chronology helps readers put individual events into historical context; a Reader’s Guide organizes entries by broad topical or thematic areas; a detailed index helps users quickly locate entries of most immediate interest; and a Resource Guide provides a list of journals, books, and associations and their websites. While articles were written to avoid jargon as much as possible, a Glossary provides quick definitions of technical terms. To ensure full, well-rounded coverage of the field, the General Editor with expertise in urban planning, public policy, and the environment worked alongside a Consulting Editor with a background in Civil Engineering. The index, Reader’s Guide, and cross references combine for thorough search-and-browse capabilities in the electronic edition. Available in both print and electronic formats, Encyclopedia of Transportation is an ideal reference for libraries and those who want to explore the issues that surround transportation in the United States and around the world.
